Help me understand MAUI MALLARD
« on: June 15, 2016, 04:41:03 AM »

Seriously guys I don't fucking understand this at all

You have DONALD DUCK

playing MAUI MALLARD

who is also a ninja named COLD SHADOW

That's like two alter egos, this makes no goddamn sense whatsoever. It's even weirder than Space Jam because in Space Jam Bugs Bunny was Bugs Bunny, not Bugs Bunny as LA Lagomorph who would mysteriously turn into his alter ego NBA player Hoppy Dunksalot

Maui Mallard is also not on the Duck family tree and has never appeared elsewhere in the comics or in DuckTales canon

I MEAN WHAT THE FUCK IS GOING ON HERE. At least in QuackShot it was Donald AS DONALD, not Donald as Sahara Steve as Blood Diamond Doug

Also the music is by MICHAEL GIACHINNO who also composed The Incredibles, and there was a fully orchestrated PC CD version as well???

i think i'm hallucinating right now

This is a weird one cause only the NA version has the Maui Mallard branding.

Maybe they thought Donald Duck was too kiddie? Game was fuckin' rad though.

Maui Mallard is a private eye or whatever, but he also takes on the vigilante persona of Cold Shadow. Think of it like how Matt Murdock is a lawyer, but also the vigilante Daredevil. How does Donald Duck fit into all of this? He's just the "actor" that is playing Maui Mallard. Maui Mallard/Cold Shadow is just a movie franchise that exists within the Donald Duck universe.

my first trip to england as a small, dumb child I bought this game thinking it was a fighting game. I also bought kirby's ghost trap thinking it was a fighting game because of an image of kirby and wispy woods standing on a 2d plane. honestly, most games not being fighting games was very strange to me.  I also got lost in a shopping mall, saw space jam in english (without subtitles) and visited a castle in newcastle that had lots of unfinished tunnels and a pretty involved story about how children often died digging them. All in all it was a eventful trip.

Anyway, it's not a particularly good game imo. it has some nice music tho.

edit: I also got a t shirt that said "save a tree, eat a beaver" with a picture of a cartoon beaver on a dinner plate, only a few years ago did I realize it meant eating pussy.

Pretty accurate:

Quote
The game stars Donald Duck in a metafictional role as duck detective Maui Mallard, who adopts the name "Cold Shadow" when he dresses up in ninja garb. For the North American versions of the game, all Donald Duck references are omitted for unknown reasons and the main character is only known as Maui Mallard. Though the end of the game informed the player to look forward to Maui's next adventure, there have been no other appearances of Maui Mallard or Cold Shadow in any medium.

But wait there's more:

Maui Mallard did not begin and end its life with one game. The work of a team incorporating Disney Interactive veterans and new members had fleshed out the universe of the detective duck and his ninja alter-ego well before production began

P.J.C.: No, Disney's marketing dept. was kind of weird sometimes.. It was supposed to be Donald Duck as Maui Mallard, and after the game was ready to be shipped they suddenly started saying "Donald Duck isn't hip in the U.S.".. We need to change the title.. And they came up with Cold Shadow, and I was really disappointed in that.
