The UI might as well be Persona 4 leftovers.

There's no english VA, but you can mute it as well.

Level ups are like Fire Emblem, complete with RNG

You earn skills from weapons.

There's no "extra turn" for weaknesses, but if any other teammates have the same element, they will do follow up attacks (Sessions).

This game is a tried and true JRPG - no gimmicks I can see. If you're jonesing for something, this is your best bet. I guess you could pick Star Ocean 5 next week as well.

There's been Odin Sphere HD, Grand Kingdom, Star Ocean V, and this in the span of a few weeks. Pretty solid time for JRPG fans.

It's an SRPG.

There are three lanes with your characters situated on one side and the enemies on the other side. A gauge dictates how much you can move up and down and left and right on these lanes. Then a gauge decides how much you can attack. Characters come in classes like mage, archer, medic, knight, and so on. You're building a crew of those classes like in most jrpgs. This one also has some real time elements to it as well unlike Grand Knights Historia.

There's a demo on PSN.

About done with Chapter 2, so some more tidbits:

- Doing sidequests unlocks skills and abilities for your characters. It's worth doing. You unlock "ad-lib performances" which are random, but they do devastating damage to all enemies. You also unlock passive skills like "More HP". You unlock these stories by gaining Stage Ranks, which level by doing Sessions or just having that character in battle.

- Characters who don't participate get shit for XP, so you will have to juggle around if you care about leveling evenly. The same applies for weapon XP. It's super easy to level up anyway.

- If you unlock the same skill from a weapon, it makes that skill stronger (+1, +2, etc.) or makes it cost less MP (Dia for example). So it's worth just going from weapon to weapon rather than the immediate strongest weapon. But do make that weapon so you can just equip it in the middle of a dungeon rather than having to teleport back out.

- Enemies can do Sessions as well. Eek!

- Save often, there's no auto-save and if you die, back to the title screen.

- Activating somethng (switch, treasure, etc) causes all enemies to despawn. If a "Savage" encounter is chasing you...

I think I asked the same question when SMT4 came out. I ended up bouncing off that after awhile, didn't like the overworld travel stuff.

It's Persona because:

- The characters are teeny-boppers
- The story revolves around "Mirages" (shadows) stealing "Performa" (lol)
- Your teeny bopper character discovers they can take the form of Fire Emblem characters
- You gain social links by being the best friend ever, which unlocks abilities (Stage Rank)
- You merge "Performa" into new "Carnage Form" (weapons) for your not-persona Fire Emblem character
- The classic SMT/Persona weakness/resist battle system, which just a sprinkling of Fire Emblem (axe weakness, sword weakness, spear weakness along with enemy-type weakness)
- Your characters are part of a secret investigation squad (Fortuna Enterprises) who are totally trying to solve the mystery of Tartarus the Idolaspheres
- The UI is Persona rofl
- Tiki = Igor

Yeah I party wiped on a normal battle when I got surprise attacked in chapter 1.

This game is very Persona albeit with far less S-Link stuff and it doesn't fuck around with getting you into dungeons and combat like P3 and P4 did.

Combat heavily rewards you for making use of enemy weaknesses to trigger sessions (combos), as well as for paying attention to the turn order bar like FFX so that you can kill things before they have a chance to attack.

It reminds me a lot of SMT4 on 3DS but with a different coat of paint and some very mild links to Fire Emblem.

When the game launched in Japan, somebody made a thread about level-ups giving you random stats. As in like, you can equally get +2 agility for a level as you can get +3 Strength +4 Agility +2 Magic etc.

Has anything happened that bad/noticeable to any of you?

You can improve your chances of good stat ups by eating and drinking the right stuff so your characters have higher luck, but like Demi said weaknesses and triggering sessions seems to be the real key to winning fights. Then again I'm barely about to start chapter 2.

Game is Persona as fuck.

I havent yet quite figured out the Session mechanic in terms of strategy and how it integrates into the combo system but I'm early. I only just beat the first boss. My experience with these games helped me realize that weaknesses and buffs are stuff you shouldn't forget.

Also - the music isn't nearly as good as Persona.

Plus, I'm kinda surprised there's no english dubbing. It's not a big deal most of the time but in combat I have no idea what is being said and it doesn't subtitle that stuff.

The battle banter is just small talk, I doubt it's anything worth caring about.

There's not much to really know about the Session mechanic except to always use it, as it helps gain Stage Rank as well as gives you items/money. It gets WAY better down the road via abilities (Itsuki mainly) - at most you'll be doing 3 combo sessions for now.

Here's a post about what they actually say:

Quote
Most of them are stock phrases; everyone gets unique in-battle quotes in certain battles (eg. Itsuki and Tsubasa have unique in-battle quotes in the first battle, which are never used in the rest of the game - "So this is the power of Carnage Form...", everyone has a unique quote their first turn against a particular boss - "We have to save Ayaha!", etc.) There are also "reaction" quotes (eg. the next person taking their turn reacts at the last person going down, etc.), "low health" quotes, "statused" quotes, and so on. There are also quotes for things like "don't start a session attack because my attack will get blocked", or "all set for session attack" and the like.

Quote
There's also special quotes for almost every costume you can make your characters wear. For example Yashiro's Doktor Schraube outfit makes him say "Looks like it's time to start the surgery" and stuff like that. There's a bikini costume for Ellie that makes all her quotes feel more embarrased and her saying "D-don't stare at me so much".

I wonder if that quote is still in for her replacement costume because they didn't even translate the battle dialogue.

Additionally, if you promote some mirages there'll be new quotes too. For example when promoting Ellies archer to an assassin he will say more dark stuff followed by his standard catchphrase about nobility, and Ellie then comments about how this makes no sense. Some of them are pretty fun.

Quote
When you select an attack, you will be able to see a potential session chain. If the last person in the session chain will have their attacks absorbed, reflected, or blocked, they will voice their concern. For example, if you are targeting an enemy that absorbs axes, and Mamori is the last member of your session chain, when you select that enemy, you will hear Mamori (or more likely, Draug) telling you not to attack.

Of course, you are free to ignore that advice; after all, if you kill off that enemy before Mamori attacks, then Mamori's attack will be part of an overkill, and attacks on subsequent target ignore absorb/reflect/block.

Characters will also have "reaction" dialogue - eg. Itsuki's turn after getting hit with an attack will have something along the lines of Chrom saying "are you okay" and Itsuki replying in the affirmative.

Mostly stuff like they would in Persona.

Is it common to be using a lot of items (revival beads, potions, etc)? I finished the second dungeon and found that characters died more than I'm used to.

Or I could just be bad at it. I haven't got it in my head to remember element weaknesses AND weapon weaknesses. But it is really fun to perform a session combo that hits with both weapon and element weakness.

I think I only had to use recovery items once, its so easy in that second dungeon to just warp back to the exit and then go outside and get fully healed. I kept going back to the Fortuna Office to fuse new weapons and abilities as well.

Finished Chapter 3. I dunno how you're supposed to tackle that boss but I just bumrushed him and took the attacks.

Tsubasa's "Debut Smile" is a godsend. Full heal + Def UP + Dodge/Hit UP for 1 SP? Yes please.

Also spoiler warning: There is a "True Ending" (like Persona!) - you have to complete everyone's sidestory then talk to them in the Epilogue.

You can see this if you go to "Artists" and you'll see 3 stars on each card.
