i was just hit with this awful realization.

it's like the thing where you notice how wrong news coverage is about stuff you know about always is, and eventually realize it must be the same for everything else too .... except applied to all of humanity instead of just journalism.

In a related idea, I've never worked for a business where I understand how they make money. All I see is waste and bad decisions leading to more waste. My theory is that creative accounting and tax breaks hides most of it and keeps them afloat.

Whatever waste you observed was, in all likelihood, a drop in the bucket, truthfully. I run into this a lot when I'm embedded somewhere that I'm working on (instead of with) and I see the waste firsthand.

Material waste or shortsighted leadership crests and breaks rather sharply due to the nature of fixed costs.

Everytime I see something I think is wasteful or a stupid decision I compare the cost impact to the global budget for my small department and it usually puts it in perspective. Then compare that to the P&L of actual revenue generators in the company and it all starts to make sense.
