I go with cancerous, since the population most likely to find it problematic tends to thin out over time.  :doge

Your use of toxic, a sarcastic and trite appropriation of an environmental issue affecting animals and dispriveledged persons worldwide, is incredibly problematic.

cancer is fine, gay is funny, but I get uncomfortable with distinguished mentally-challenged.

I've said it before, but "that's distinguished mentally-challenged" is one of the most common expressions in my office. Which is pretty ironic considering what we do :P

I've never used the word cancer that way, but in general I don't see any harm in asking people to think a little harder about their choice of words.  I've definitely cut ties with friends who had a habit of using "gay" and "distinguished mentally-challenged" as insults.  I'll usually talk to them about it first to see if they'll change.  People get surprisingly defensive when you call them out on it.

I have a feeling all the "this fucking year!!" stuff has more to do with the proliferation of mass/social media than anything abnormal about this particular calendar.  Global population keeps increasing and there are more ways to become famous than ever before, thus there are more celebrities who'll eventually die.  Plus it gets easier and easier to spread the word about the latest tragedy.  The world is a lot less chaotic than it was a century ago, but there will be more and more 2016s as time goes on.
