SFV's mixup game is fucked. Cross ups seem like they whiff most of the time, pokes and links have to be at point blank range. But there's teleports MvC3 style and a tag team character that flys onto screen instantly on the opposite side.

I think it's safe to say this was a great Evo for everyone. Can't wait for next year already.

Will be interesting to see how Evo Japan pans out, I think they already tried something like that before and it kinda fizzled.

Eh. The standard of play was great and as good as 2016 but the organization was awful. Too many commercial breaks and awful staging. Pokken overran massively and was absolutely dire watching. Viewer count completely dived year over year as well because watching it on stream was terrible. Using the arena for finals was a mistake as well because the amount of empty seats made everything look super amateur hour. I think Melee ended up being the most watched game as well and SF V only pulled in 180K. I know it was on ESPN as well, but that's way below Ultra last year (Which was about 250K)

I don't think it's the death of the FGC but once the high of the event passes there's going to be a ton of questions asked why the hell was there such a massive drop in viewers.

I'd have to see the live airing stats, but I don't think ESPN gives those out, but:

You answered yourself. I didn't watch on Twitch this year and waited for the top 8 because that's where most of the action was. I haven't seen Marvel vs Capcom 3 this year either because of that. Much better quality (despite ESPN's cut aways) for me than trying to watch it on stream. The other factor is SF5's terrible launch. Casuals can't care if the game doesn't have things that'll let them want to play it after seeing hype matches by themselves because they know they'll be stomped dry online.

But to be fair, CS:GO dropped players over last years showing in Colonge. So it isn't just a Evo problem.

And come on, fgc- http://m.neogaf.com/showthread.php?t=1248168

Way too many commercials this time around.

Pokken overran massively and was absolutely dire watching.

I know they want the highest viewer counts, but they really need to stick to the schedule and have more than one stage/use another stream to start coverage of the next tourney, let the other tourney finish up, and then switch streams or something.  It would keep things running smoother.  I guess one problem with this is that if someone were playing in both tournaments, they'd be fucked, though.

The stream sound quality was absolute ass this year and a large number of people dropped SRK to go to the Topanga stream instead.  That could have affected the viewer count by the end.  And then there's ESPN2, as mentioned, which also can account for a drop in stream viewers.

Not a bad event this year. It was more of a pain to get around but otherwise it was about the same as other years. There was a legit noticeable smell this year, it was gross. But in the end I got to play Tekken 7 for like am hour and got a decent win streak (19) on a TTT cab so it all ended well. I say this every year but I think this'll be my last EVO. The transition of the event from tournament to video game convention is almost complete so it might be time to check out other events, like CEO

Like I said in the GAF thread: They should make it 4-5 days (which kills Nacho's motivation to go) as a convention since the size of attendees and tournaments is increasing PLUS would give each niche (Capcom, Namco, Animu, Smash) a separate and full day for people to watch and not worry about times. People playing SF and Marvel would only have to worry about over-time on both those. But if someone was playing Street Fighter and Soul Calibur, they wouldn't have to worry about the time-overs if they got knocked out early and would have time to get to bed and be fresh for the next day/other game.

And yeah, I'm not sure I'm digging Evo's growth going from small community-ran tournaments into a big event. Just look at the Infiltration+Laugh video Morma posted about Evo 2013 and compare it to this year. Just 3 years and this is getting big bugets/productions. It's crazy.

Topanga stream was only about a 3-4K add for MK X and Marvel. The viewer drop was consistent across every game except Guilty Gear and Melee and across Saturday and Sunday. Smash 4 was 99K last year and peaked at 45K this year. Marvel barely broke 100K, Tekken 7 was as low as 13K at points (And that's going to be a Sunday game next year). I'm not sure if it's evo being done as an event or the LoL major interfered but after last years high views. It's worrying that even Saturdays that were pulling in 100K are dropping so hard.

His sponsorship was dropped before that thread was made and bans are likely coming. He's also said he's not coming back to the US ever again.

I haven't followed Evo from the start but 2013 is when I started watching and it was already cemented in my head as the superbowl of eSports in many respects.

I'd love to see another day added, Thursday-Sunday would give me an extra day of background info to get hype over at work, but I'm not sure of the logistics for most of these players. Then again I guess most of them are college-age and have summer off anyways... but they also might have work. Dunno.

I'm not sure how much Nintendo had to do with Pokken's ultimate inclusion, but this was basically its first major so it's not surprising to me they didn't have a good idea of how much time it would need. I definitely won't miss it next year (unless a good scene develops, but I'm not holding my breath.)

Also Melee had more viewers than SFV

On Sunday every game fell short of the peak viewer count from last year when compared to the game in its time slot, with the exception of Melee, which had the most viewers on the main channel during Evo with nearly 220K.

Read the wrong chart on Smash 4. 71K in the end including restreams and that's still a drop considering the Saturday finals last year were well above that along with Sunday.

AFAIK there's already a number of players there by Thursday and some "salty suite" style streams go on from hotel rooms.  I don't think it would be too much of a stretch to start on a Thursday for most of the people attending.  They should think about polling everyone on it.

Every competitive game's viewership has declined this year.

I think people are getting bored of the current crop of titles, and Overwatch wasn't a breakout esport, so things are stagnating.

All those games are old though, so I think you're right. I also think it's too early to call it for Overwatch. I can see it steadily increasing until an expansion or something, and then becoming a big mainstay for some years.

MvC3 is a dumpster fire compared to SFIV, gameplay and design wise. The one terrible thing they share is the comeback mechanic used in each game.
