AM2R (Metroid 2 remake) finally out
« on: August 06, 2016, 06:20:49 PM »
http://metroid2remake.blogspot.no/

Some guy has been making a Metroid 2 remake for the last few years and he finally finished it right in time for the 30th anniversary of the Metroid series.

It's Metroid 2 in the style of Zero Mission, which IMO is the best all around Metroid game in the series.

I played about an hour and it's pretty shocking out accurate it feels to Zero Mission. From what I understand, it's supposed to be 1:1 accurate to the play feel of that game.

Since I never played Metroid 2, this really feels like playing a brand new Metroid game and that's pretty awesome.

I'll definitely play, but if this is Zero Mission like I'd really like to play it as a GBA rom.

i watched a lot of it in twitch. looks very good, but like any other can game I've seen its very uneven. some art looks great, some looks like trash. some new puzzles are inspired, a lot look like poo. game in general borrows very heavily from zero mission in terms of puzzle design. overall it looks nice but I'll stick with the original metroid games.

i will say the metroid animations look fuckin fantastic tho.

It's made in god awful Game Maker so good luck with that.

Interesting... I always wondered why Nintendo never went ahead and gave Return of Samus the Zero Mission treatment. I played through the GB game for the first time earlier this year (I played the game before on my cousin's GB waaaay back in the day, but never got too far), and it's interesting but with flaws. The monochrome environments are real repetitive (and without a map it's really tough to navigate), and some of the more complex maneuvers (ie the space jump) have clunky controls. The best part of the game is the music, really creepy ambient sounds and noise music it's very unsettling especially the further you get into SR-388.

This was highly rumored but sadly never happened. Way fewer people have played it so the potential audience for people who like Metroid and would give it a shot is probably pretty high. But then again since this has gotten as far as released without a DMCA maybe they don't give a shit. :lol

If you're a fan of Metroid, it's absurd to me that you would skip this. It's fantastic.

Zero Mission was great. Downloading this shit before Nintendo's lawyers descend with the C&D's.

I'll give it a go.  Never played Metroid 2 because you will never make me play awful Game Boy games.  Super Mario Land is trash.

Maybe the Zero Mission treatment will work!

Not entirely gone thankfully. The official site seems really untouched. But I'm worried if they're going to take that down next, so I went and downloaded it to be safe.

Loved Metroid II even for its flaws, so I'll give this remake a shot.

I've been watching Red Scarlet stream it. It's okay, but like most fan games inconsistent in quality.

This gonna sound cold, but why even bother in the first place doing Nintendo's fan games ? At this point it's pretty clear they're hostile to the whole idea and will legally nuke you ASAP.

I'm not saying out of respect for Nintendo, but that dude is now facing the prospect of legal troubles and flushing a few years of work down the drain (A bit extreme, but he is barred from any over the counter distribution) just because of it. I dunno, if it were me, I would have swapped some other sprites and called it "Subwayoid". Could have passed under the radar despite being a 1:1 remake.

Why do a fan game of anyone's IP in this day and age of the DMCA? Because you don't have confidence in your own work standing on its own? Or because you're a total special fellow?

The GB got really good when people moved on from the system if anything, and has more GOAT than any other handheld.

Kirby's Pinball Land
Tetris
Gargoyles Quest
Donkey Kong 94
Operation C
Zelda Links Awakening (Zelda GOAT)
Wario Land
Cat Trap (Pitman)
Ninja Gaiden Shadow
Castlevania 2

Just to name a few.

i don't hate gb at all you rubes. I'm just saying that there was a lot of shit on that system, which is 100% accurate. the first year of two of release youd find the shelves choked with block puzzle games and other similar bullshit  later on it became a dumping ground for shit games with tie-ins for kids shows that were clearly put together in a couple of weeks. of course there were some good games but Jesus Christ they were buried under a mountain of shit.

I'm pretty sure the reason most first party games made were bizzarro versions of themselves is because Gunpei Yokoi's teams were behind them.

Speaking about Game Boy, once I finish with Setsuna I'm gonna probably start FFL3. Never played that one back in the day, and playing games on Super Game Boy is kinda neat.

Gameboy was and is still great. They have the best Zelda and Pokemon titles. And Mega Man IV and V ruled and were far better than their NES counterparts.

I don't have nostalgia for most Gameboy titles since I've only played Tetris, Mario Land 2 and Pokemon as a kid. Most of what I've played were starting from when the DS was halfway through its life.

there are several real nice gameboy games, but even most of those are hurt by the severe limitations of the gb hardware. hard to go back to imo
