Apple fined 13 billion euro by EU
« on: August 30, 2016, 06:20:25 AM »
For tax evasion dating back to 1991 where in some years they paid as little as 0.005% tax on ALL their European profit.

I'm surprised the Irish government hasn't been fined too for this kind of shit but I guess the EU is afraid as probably every government has scumbag deals

They asked Ireland to demand 13 billion. Dunno if that's quite the same.

Both Apple and Ireland will fight this. It is cute of Ireland to deny the whole thing though.

Well I guess Ireland is back in the gutter then

Not everyone seems to understand though whats going on

This is nothing short of a con by the EU. This is a cash grab and nothing else.

Make no mistake, Irish people will not see ONE RED CENT of this money.

The money will NOT be transferred to Ireland. It will be held in an escrow account which we won’t be able to access. From there the EU will take it and use it to pay back their German bondholders who should have been burned years ago. At no point will we be able to access a single penny of this.

Con by the EU to get tax money to where profit was made?  :lol

We've always been in the gutter. This is just the usual 90's government dodgy dealing blowing up in their face. And they will defend it to the hilt because Apple just announced 3000 new jobs in Cork and more expansion plans in Ireland. Expect them to fight this for years and years. Especially since Google and Microsoft's Europe HQ's are here as well.

I know a lot of people that work(ed) for Apple in Cork and as I lived there I know how big these companies are and what they mean for Ireland.

Country really needs to look to the future where its almost certain this type of setup won't be viable.

How will they ever survive with the paltry 480 billion they'll have left after these commies pilfer their coffers

was talking to an accountant friend and he was talking about how this is really more EU vs US politics. If Apple has to pay the EU they get a write off in the US taxes. So there's a conspiracy theory that this is politically motivated to stick to the US and that the US will then try to hit back.  :hans1

I don't know anything about about taxation and foreign country business yields, but european companies obviously do business in the US as well, then there is TTIP etc. - there are more than enough possibilities for negotiations or pressure from the US.

Apple wrote a letter to their customers explaining their view on the situation

http://www.apple.com/ie/customer-letter/

They argue that they do R&D in California and therefore should be taxed in the US. They also claim that the situation is the same for european companies in the US. Is the latter true (Kara, Puppy?)

This gets into P.E. (physical establishment) laws which companies are really loathe to discuss. I've been in meetings about P.E. that were like fight club literally there were slides that said "You were not here. We did not discuss P.E. Now let us discuss P.E." It all comes down to some really crazy legal schemes and loop holes that are way more complex than you'd think. I remember one company had a massive office in Singapore that did EVERYTHING for this entire business unit but per P.E. laws they were not allowed to "make decisions" about the business. So they had an american employee (1) that all they did was rubber stamp everything the Singapore office (45+ employees) did. No thinking. All they did was click the approve button.

Wish I could get a job like that :goty

If we all put that much feeling into not disappointing Kara, the word would be a better place.
