60 Reasons why Spielberg Rules
« on: January 25, 2007, 11:11:56 AM »
http://www.empireonline.com/features/spielbergat60/60.asp

This is from December, apparently, when he turned 60, but I never saw it posted anywheres. I've never been a HUGE Spielberg fan, but I really have the utmost respect for the guy, and he has directed some of my favorite films.

Minority Report is one of his better films and that was recent.

Minority Report is my favorite Spielberg film aside from A.I. from either the 90's or 00's.

Minority Report was great. I haven't seen it in years though

I went to the theater to see AI. Although I thought it was way too long (that ending could have been scrapped) I still really enjoyed.

Spielberg is meh overall, imo. Some good films, and alot of overhyped/over appreciated crap.

Outside of Raiders -- probably my favorite pure entertainment film of all time -- most of Spielberg's shit leaves me cold. I'd like to see him direct a challenging, difficult script for a change, instead of his largely pandering mainstream stuff.

Raiders is a decent adventure film, but cmon -- its hardly the classic people make it.

I've never been a real fan of the Indiana Jones films, and while I can't deny their effects on the industry I just don't think they're very good films in their own right.

I really can't find it in my heart to criticise Raiders -- I'm sure plenty of the complaints are valid -- 'cuz I just :heart :heart :heart it. It plays to the things I dig: tough dudes, gutsy babes, the occult, nazi killin', adventure, and DEADLY TRAPS.

Raiders is one of the few movies where I am speechless when trying to find a fault in it.

He's really hit or miss.  And yeah, he doesn't know how to end a movie most of the time.  He nearly killed every good thing about Schindler's List with that awful Spielbergy Hollywoody speechifying Liam Neeson crying scene at the end.  And in the dead spaces between the fantastic battle scenes, Saving Private Ryan was roll-your-eyes bad.  He can't help but squirt some Spielberg all over every movie he directs, whether it calls for it or not.

Not a movie, but as of recent definitely one of his best works as executive producer along with Tom Hanks:

Minority Report was lame.  The best thing that ever came from that movie is the animated gif of Cruise chasing the Mario Kart squad.  lolz

BoB has everything SPR lacks.  Partly because it's based on true events and sticks pretty damned close to the facts - although contrary to the episode focusing on him, Private Blythe did not die after the war from his wounds.  He fully recovered, and went on to be decorated in the Korean War.  He retired from the Army and died in the late 1960s, I believe.  The series makers were misinformed and confused him with another soldier named BLythe during their research, and it was too late to correct their mistakes when the truth was discovered.

munich was great, if a bit too conciliatory for my tastes.
