Games reproduction...

Has anyone ever purchased a game repro?

I randomly ran into a copy of FF3j NES translated to english. It's pretty neat to be able to play on the real hardware. The game seems pretty fun and it works just fine. I searched online and there are tons of sites selling repros of translated games for just about every 8bit/16 bits system out there. You can get cheap copies of unreleased stuff, games never released as NTSC, betas, and so on.

While it's neat, the downside to this is that they are using legit games as sacrificial lambs to do this :-\  .. Also, people are now reproducing 'rare' games (like Hagane on the snes) and passing them as legit titles, even retro game stores are starting to order huge lots of them to pass them as legit copies to unsuspecting casual people. They get on sites like aliexpress and order copies of Zelda 3 and Chrono trigger for 20$ a pop and resell them for 50-100$+,. Thats pretty fucking shitty

Still, it's neat to enjoy translated games on the real hardware

Opinions on game repros?

I haven't had my old systems hooked up in ages and, even though emulation isn't perfect, I would rather play a ROM on my PC or a portable systems than go through the efforts of buying repros.

I'm not a fan of repros of rare stuff that actually got a US release (Hagane, Earthbound, Aero Fighters, etc) regardless of how rare and expensive those games are. Taking a fan translation and profiting off of it (not to mention the original game developer not getting any profit either) is shady, but I'll admit I own a few repros, playing fan translated RPGs on a real SNES rather than a PC emulator is much more enjoyable to me. Also the ROM hacks and homebrew repros are cool too (though I don't know if the homebrew dev gets any money off of it), my friend owns CT: Crimson Echoes on cart.

I think the majority of 'sacrificial lamb' gaming is old 90's EA sports titles so no tears over that.

Emulation is just so much easier (and free-er)

I can see it being a pretty neat thing for homebrew stuff, but reproductions of existing games? Nah, that doesn't interest me at all. I'd rather just get an android box and dump some roms on it.

I've bought a few SNES translated repros at conventions. Something about the physical format encourages me to play the game more instead of emulated on my PC.

It's fun to play Star Fox 2 on an actual SNES.
