do people still make gaming desktop rigs? i want a desktop rig
« on: September 08, 2016, 09:40:10 PM »
so where should i start? don't think I've looked at desktop parts since i helped my parents put together one in like 2000. what should i be looking for in terms of ram types, monitors, gpu brand, etc? not looking for some $3k monster or whatever, but i want something nice still.

What's your budget?  What resolution do you want to play at?

http://pcpartpicker.com/list/hmhgBP

I spent a whopping 5 minutes picking the parts to this and it would play basically everything out today at 1080p and 60 FPS at high/max (barring Deus Ex MD).

Granted you'll want to do your own research (especially with the case/mobo/PSU) and you might want a different CPU or GPU, but it's a decent baseline.

You can put together a very nice mid-range computer for about $1500 [or less, if you really shop around]. Most expensive parts will be the processor and GPU [I spent about $800 on an Intel i7 6700k and NVidia 1070, which completely destroy every game on the market right now], most of the rest won't matter too terribly much. Throw in as much RAM as you feel like buying, anything above 8gigs will do everything you need it to [DDR4 is the new hotness].

Quote
(barring Deus Ex MD)

Newest patch plus latest NVidia driver actually have helped Deus Ex's performance enormously.

But yeah, it's easier than ever to build a PC, both in terms of the building process and more importantly installing all the software/drivers afterwards. So have fun.

It was a nightmare to put on my CPU fan (fucking bracket wouldn't stay still) and to mount my mobo (fucking tiny screws).  :maf

Otherwise building is just really expensive Legos.

i had a problem with mounting my fan a few months back, despite coolermasters claims i'm pretty sure it wasn't supposed to be installed the way the directions said since it said the mount the board in the case first for stability, which would have rendered the fact that you had to put a nut on underneath impossible, what i figured out on my own worked way better thanks to my copius amount of large politically themed books to hold up the massive heat sink's weight

was somehow still easier than the stock fans intel shipped with their core 2 duos

i remember when all the back panel and internal stuff like PCI/AGP/RAM/SATA slots first got color coded and it was like wait, why didn't this happen ten years ago

now i don't think mine actually are anymore for seemingly aesthetic purposes iirc everything inside is black and most of the back panel is just usb ports :lol

the one consistently highrated cooler master one can be had for like $18-20 or so often, i don't mind paying a little more in this case versus some of those cheapo third party fans

Or just use a desktop that you already have. Streaming isn't *that* power-hungry.

There are like, lots of different kinds of pc gamers. If you're playing competitive multi-player shit like fps games or mobas or whatever, then sure. If you just want to enjoy Witcher 3 on a big screen looking better than any of the shitbox consoles can output, then a little occasional lag is not a big deal, at least speaking for myself.

I agree, just the narrative in some circles is = PC gaming only worth it with 60fps, max settings, gsync, 4k, 1ms etc etc otherwise you need to upgrade.

Good to see some level headed people here.

Don't listen to the PC masterrace shitters. Very few people are on the bleeding edge and as ever, they're not really catered to with appropriate content. Though I don't know that it matters all that much to people who run 1080 SLI setups and such.

PC gaming has always been cyclical to me. When I upgrade my computer I can run most games maxed out and then there is a gradual drop in quality until my GPU is too old to even run the games I want to play.

Frankly, 60FPS should be a target. But everything else is a slider. 4K is dumb, especially in the current budget-build climate. Most people will not care about 4K. Same with g-sync when v-sync has been there before that technology.

If you're fine with 30FPS, go for it. But most folks in multiplayer titles are going to be trying to target 60 or above.

I don't like playing FPS mp on pc really due to hacks etc.

PC gaming has always been cyclical to me. When I upgrade my computer I can run most games maxed out and then there is a gradual drop in quality until my GPU is too old to even run the games I want to play.

I usually start out on High then drop to low.

Just sold my 6 year old laptop yesterday thats been my main rig (i7,8gb, Geforce 555m) and would still run all Blizzard games plus things like Pillars etc.

Now looking to upgrade to a 1050 rig maybe next month (maybe 960m cause they are cheap now).

Apple has options, just none of them geared towards gaming.

Its like they don't want that gaming dollar.

I mean they could include a 960m in the Macbook Pro model at a 1300 bucks but they don't want to.

I've decided to bite the bullet and get a modern gaming PC soon. Too lazy to shop around for parts and build the thing, so I'm gonna get this or go to Cyberpower's site and get a customized PC from them.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01HNBLHAA/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER

Seems like a incredibly solid "stock" rig for what I want to play and do, all the extra shit and components themselves are really well priced. $720 for something that would cost $800+ if you shopped for components individually.

Listen to this man. If you still have a GAF account, go post your budget and needs over there. Buy the parts through a build a PC site like NCIX (if I remember right) pay like $200 more for them to build it if you can't do it yourself and you're done.

Is there going to be much difference between the 1070 and 1080 if I'm using a 1080P monitor?

Was thinking about getting a desktop from Amazon.  This one seems like a good deal although a buddy said that the water cooling system in it looked like cheap shit.

If you read benchmarks there is a pretty big difference in performance between the two models. Do you have a high resolution monitor (e.g. 144 Hz or G-sync)? A 1070 is probably good enough if you're limited to 60 Hz.

I'm currently deciding between 1070, 1080, and the unreleased 1080Ti.

The wiser choice is to go 1070 over a 1080 since the price bump of a 1080 doesn't match the performance gains. If you just have a 1080p monitor you should probably look into upgrading that next ASAP.

About the PC you linked:
  • The water cooling in there looks poor and is rather small; probably a budget custom config for Cyberpower.
  • The cost is pretty damn high; for example I bought a better rig with higher quality parts for at least $500 cheaper.
  • The rig is missing an SSD which is a deal-breaker.

I have this 60 Hz ultra-wide 2560x1080 monitor. It's fantastic for what it is and I don't plan on getting a higher-resolution monitor anytime soon, since I picked it up in May.  The ASUS MX monitors are awesome for gaming and the 27" model is at the top of the list on Displaylag.  I notice a performance hit when I game at that resolution; my laptop definitely can't handle it as well as 1920x1080 and I have to drop settings way down for some games, so while I wanted to wait until next year to get a new PC, I may do it this year instead.

Unless I missed something, it has a 240 GB SSD and a 2 TB HDD.

If I wanted a pre-built desktop, do you have a good recommendation?
