I probably missed it, my bad. I only saw a 7200rpm drive mentioned in the specs.

I don't have recommendations for a pre-built desktop unfortunately.

If I wanted a pre-built desktop, do you have a good recommendation?

Yeah: Don't.

I mean if you really want to overpay, get a PC from like NCIX with PC Partpicker parts. Do not do Water Cooling. That's dumb "ricer" bullshit you don't need. A Good aftermarket fan will keep your stuff cool even if you're going to Overclock. If you're doing 1080p for a few years (or longer) a 1060 will be more than enough for PS4-era stuff (maybe future proof with the 1070 if you have money to burn) the 1080GPU is for people with more money then sense, especially the Titan models. Don't worry about those.

Get a motherboard that is able to handle the new i5/i7's, get the 1060/70 GPU, get about 16Gig RAM with 2 8gig sticks (depending on DDR4 prices) and maybe an audio card (IIRC) and that's about all you need. Unless you want faster loads/OS boot-ups the Solid States really aren't that needed (says someone that got one this past month for a 3 year old PC)

Not interested in building one.  I want something that is ready to go.  I know it costs more that way, but hey.

Then pick the parts I just told you to pick (mobo, cheap GPU, RAM) and get NCIX to build it. Don't do a pre-built and definitely don't do a watercooler if you're not wanting to build yourself. You're better off spending the ~$1000 (depending on budget) and the like $200 service/build-it-for-you fee than buying a pre-built with stuff that you won't really know how to use/dumb shit that fan cooling can do without worry.

Building a PC yourself is so stupidly easy. Even ram timings are a thing of the past.

Compared to 10 years ago, building a PC today is fisher price levels of difficulty.

I mean, I can understand the caution but if a part breaks you're gonna have to fuck about with the water cooler to replace the part. Which is where my "don't do that if you're a first timer" comes in.

I just quickly threw this together. I'm not sure about the performance but this just shows you that you'd save like $300, lose the water cooling (no big deal), lose the 8 USB slots (do you really need that many?  :doge) and the keyboard and mouse (meh) but get nearly the same thing for slightly cheaper and then you can throw in the $200 "build-it-for-you" on that and save like $100 less (but I haven't put in an audio card or DVD/Blu-ray drives if you need that)

Also from what I saw some these are kinda overkill depending on what you're doing and definitely for 1080p.

The 1060 is budget (and I got it last week) so if you wanted to burn another $200 or so the 1070 would be fine.

I'll even throw in the SSD I bought earlier this month just because.

User, what you are suggesting is $1342.57.  I'd rather pay a couple hundred more and get something from a company with a warranty and an easy return policy, as well as from a place where I can pay in installments-- I already blew a nice chunk of change buying a Surface Pro 4 outright a little while ago.  Hence Amazon.

The funny thing is that I've done it before-- I took a course on hardware and add to completely disassemble a desktop, then put it back together again.  I had never done this before and had no trouble.

Then two years ago, I tried upgrading the power supply and graphics card on the the desktop I had...and killed it.  :lol :doge

I built my new PC back in May. Last time I built a PC was in 2006. Shit just worked the first time with ZERO issues! The only hiccup was waiting for my MSI GTX 1080 Gaming X. Even fucking bought a Asus ROG 165hz 1440p monitor, PC gaming is fucking bliss.

I only use laptops when I'm on the move. A desktop with a good monitor, a full-sized keyboard and a good mouse is so much nicer to work with. If I only had a laptop I would probably do most of my gaming on consoles.

I need to replace my GTX 680 before the year is over. How did you guys decide which version of the 1070 to get? Just looked on newegg and there's way too many to choose from.

I generally go for models that are overclocked with extra cooling (mostly because of the lower noise levels) with good user reviews. For the 1070 series there are several good alternatives with either three fans, or two oversized fans.

Thanks everyone, I'll just go with this. I tried Forza Motorsport 6 Apex on my PC last night in anticipation for Horizon 3 and it looked like ass, so I figured it's time to upgrade. I can't complain. Got my current card from Smooth Groove almost 3 years ago.

OK, definitely getting something new now-- I put up my Virtual Boy games (which includes Jack Bros., nice n' rare), two Gameboy games, and one Gameboy Advance game. on eBay this afternoon.  All of them sold and I came out with over $1,000.   :lol  I got some other funds too that puts me at a bit over $1,200.  I can foot the bill for another $400-$600 to get something crazy but I will also likely sell my laptop to a buddy and get another few hundred.

So now I'm not sure what to buy.  I want to get something INSANE now.

OK, done.  I'm going with an MSI Nightblade MI2 from CUK.  Decided to get a 1070 instead of a 1080 card and save a bit.  I don't think I need the 1080 since I'm doing 1080P gaming for at least two or three more years.  Can always upgrade later.  Will end up costing me less than $300 out of my own pocket.

Specs:

That's pretty much the same computer I've got. Unless you're playing at a really high resolution, you should be able to blow every game out of the water with ease.

Yeah, you are set on 1080p for a while. Maxed-out settings and everything.

I'm probably gonna try to put together something similar but looking at 1440p, maybe.

My monitor is 2560x1080, so I really just need an extra boost in power to run games at higher/max settings over my laptop, and this should do the trick nicely.  I usually game at 1920x1080 on non ultra-wide supported games, but there are the occasional games that stretch out when not at 2560x1080 and this will no longer be a problem.

I've already been gaming at 1080P but generally can't run stuff maxed out.  Most recent games are low/medium settings so this will make for a nice upgrade.

Although I have thought about hooking this PC up alongside my consoles, on my other 1920x1080 27" monitor, and just using it as a gaming box-- my Surface would then be docked to the ultra-wide monitor.  Probably won't though.

i7-6700K is such overkill lol is there anything even that would get bottlenecked by an i5-6500? Don't think so.

The same thing will do 1440p/60fps. No need to get a Titan X for that.

Yeah, I just meant that I would put together basically the same build as bork, but use it on a 1440p monitor, which many reviews say is the sweet spot for the 1070. I really don't have a monitor right now, other than some 1080p LCD that's more a TV than a monitor, so I'd be willing to go out and buy a new monitor at 1440p.

My 1070 is awesome but I think I'm bottlenecking it in other places. I'm running an i7 3770, it's a few generations old. 16GB DDR3 Ram. I feel like I want to upgrade to the newest gen i7 or i5, and get some DDR4 memory.

Games like Street Fighter V and Overwatch run at max detail settings and 60 FPS, as expected.

Then I got to Rise Of The Tomb Raider.  Everything maxed out.  2560x1080 ultra widescreen 21:9 picture.  It ran buttery smooth.  I saw effects that I don't think I've seen in other games before.  :lol

Tested some games over the weekend on my new MSI Nightblade MI2 PC.  Was able to run every game I tried, save one, maxed-out at the highest detail settings on my 2560x1080 ultra-wide monitor.  I don't have FRAPS installed right now but on games with FPS counters, I was getting 60 FPS.  I think Rise Of The Tomb Raider had some dips but stayed extremely high.  The one game that had performance issues was Deus Ex Human Revolution.  It stuttered like crazy.  :lol  Need to figure out what caused that and tweak it.

Despite the small form factor, the machine has stayed cool and pretty quiet.  Am very impressed with this thing.  It's small enough that if I wanted to I could easily put it right next to my game consoles and use it as a pure gaming rig.

Here's some screenshots.  The Steam game shots are compressed .JPEGs except for Tomb Raider.

Dead Or Alive 5 (Which is basically a PS3 port-up and has little-to-no options available, but damn if it isn't clean as hell- actually looks like those bullshots that Team Ninja likes to use in their games.)

Ultrawide has its appeal, I must admit.

There's an Amazon reseller with different configurations at all different prices.  Some of them make no sense-- I saw ones with older graphics cards and less RAM for more money or the same price.  :lol

But this particular one was $1,690.

Ultrawide has its appeal, I must admit.

I got it more for non-gaming reasons -mainly for browsing/movie watching/both at the same time/etc- but it's really nice to have something close to a dual monitor setup without a bezel in the middle.

Didn't want to go with something higher-resolution at the time and I love ASUS' MX monitors.

I would never finish that game.  I will try out that Cyberpunk game whenever it comes out, however.

Why would I buy something that I know I'm never going to play through?  I'm not too big on medieval fantasy RPGs.  I mean, the game looks cool and all...but I'd probably play it for like an hour or two and never touch it again.

Wrong. That game grips you. You will be thinking about it at work and dreaming about it at night.

Witcher 3 also has a variety of waifus if that sweetens the pot any.

OK, onto DisplayPort.  I wondered what the difference was between this and HDMI, and couldn't really find a clear answer, so I ordered a cable to try for myself.  Some say that it helps with monitors that run at 144hz, but I have no idea if it really does anything for a 60hz monitor.

I plugged the cable in and right away noticed that the picture was brighter.  The image quality also seems a little sharper.  OK, cool.

I woke up this morning and got no signal on the monitor.  Plugged HDMI back in and got a signal.  Did some testing this evening:

-This isn't a problem with the cable.
-It's not a problem with the (multiple) displayport inputs on the PC.
-Changed the nVidia power settings to maximum, based on a recommendation.  No effect.
-I had a mini displayport-to-displayport cable for my Surface.  Got no signal with it too.
-Unplugged the monitor (including the power cord from the outlet) for a few minutes, based on a recommendation I got that didn't seem like it would work...but it did.
-Plugged the monitor back in.  Got a signal with the Surface.
-Put the Surface in standby.  Got a signal but it reset the display settings I had selected.
-Plugged the displayport cable back into the PC.  Got no signal.
-Unplugged the HDMI cable from the PC and got a signal.

:huh

Am wondering if this is just too much 'power' for the monitor to handle.  Maybe it supports an earlier standard of displayport or something?  If it happens again, it's back to HDMI.  Just weird.

EDIT: The cable was from CableMatters.  I see people complaining about their quality.  Back it goes-- made sure to check displayport.org and went with a VESA-certified one instead.

Because the Witcher is one of the decent ones out there. I haven't played Witcher 2 or 3, but the first one was pretty fun in a 2007 jank way. Plus the character is pretty good in the books.
