Yeah follow blu's posts. For the most part you're gonna be sticking with UC shit since thats where all the best stuff.  Origin manga is really good and I know they're doing some OVAs based off it but I havent seen them yet (there are 2 eps out now iirc).

If you *have* to watch some of the newer shit the first season of Gundam Seed is okay but it's basically a remake of OG Gundam just worse. The second season is horrible and you will want to kill yourself.

Gundam 00...I actually really liked the first season a lot but of course the second season was a garbage fire and the it's movie is even worse.

A good thing to keep in mind when you start exploring Gundam is if they push anti-war peace shit hard it's probably bad and you're gonna want to kill yourself the further you dig into that series/ova/movie.

As for gunpla, it's kinda whatever you want man. Even some of the bad series/movies etc have some dope mech designs so you can just buy whatever looks cool to you. Though I would say stick to 1/100th and bigger.

Was thinking about making a Gundam thread, but we just had this one like 7 months ago so I'm just gonna use this.

The other day I learned about Advance of Zeta: Flag of the Titans. It's set in 0083 before Z Gundam and apparently is a photonovel which is novel with pictures I guess? idk, but the mechs in it are pretty awesome. Like look at the main mech:



This is a really fucking good design! Sure it's not all that Gundam looking, but it's super legit and could easily be the lead mech in a videogame. A lot of times the spinoffs have kinda iffy designs so was really surprised by it. Also the other mechs and the upgrades follow the Thunderbolt/0083 style of ridiculously overpowered technology that couldn't possibly exist in a time before Zeta Gundam, but fun to look at although most are WTF:





Would be cool if they animate this novel at some point. These mechs would be awesome with that Unicorn/Thunderbolt style of animation.

I thought Turn A Gundam was universally loved? Turn A Gundam is an awesome mustachio design and Turn X is pretty legendary. The two-legged AT-ATs are cool as are the little Froggy Haro mechs. Don't forget Harry's gold Sumo which is fucking rad.






And then the character designs, the music, the animations.

As to the actual show itself, while I appreciate it as art, the reason I don't recommend it to people as an entry to Gundam is that the middle is goddamn boring in pacing. It's a very slow show. BUT, the final ep is incredible and one of the best episodes of anime ever. The opening 13eps or so are great and the ending 13 are great, it's just the middle is a slog imo. The Diana-swap stuff is zzzzzz.


FWIW I only have 3 actual Gundam models. A Freedom Gundam I've never bothered building, and a Turn A & Turn X pair I built.

Speaking of endings. Let's talk about how Gundam series have like the best endings ever.  0079, Zeta, Turn A, SEED, 00 S1, Gundam Build Fighters, so many series go from like good to A++ in those last finale battles. I can't even pick a favorite, though Zeta's last 3-4 ep battle is probably the most epic sci-fi war scrimmage ever. But yeah, Turn A...load up a youtube of that final ep and watch the last 10 mins and be reminded of why it's so good. Then don't bother rewatching the show because you'll get bored and drop it less than 20 eps in.

I was an early defender of SEED back in the day even if it is a not so subtle remake of 0079. But they through out all my good will with SEED Destiny. Similar thing with 00. Solid to great 1st season and then a trainwreck with everything that came after.

The 00 movie is so fucking bad. Please, even if you somehow fuck with 00 s2, don't watch the movie.

where Kira/Freedom start falling and then the FREEDOM & JUSTICE song starts playing and he becomes Jesus Yamato and rises again that is great. Destiny is a piece of shit though.  00 S1 was pretty good, especially the 2nd half & final battles, S2 was Geass bad but entertaining, but the movie is just so bad.

Welcome to Gundam. It's hard to think of a Gundam series where the main unit isn't OP. 0080 War in the Pocket and 08th Team is all I can think of off the top of my head. The problem is that usually the main character has a Gundam and everyone else has grunt units, so it's not really a fair battle even if the Gundam is initially weak.
