Such a horrible attitude. Voting in national bourgeois elections is the most brutal and un-democratic means of political participation. When our president is Donald Trump, we can't afford to rule out any tactics of resistance and disruption.

Americans are such tremendous idiots about strikes.

They are effective. They work. They benefit us all.

Wow when I read the comments in this thread I realize how powerless the average american worker is. You can't go on strike ? Ever ? Doesn't that bother you ? Don't you realize that you're the only western nation where people simply can't afford to go on strike to protect their rights ?

That being said, if a general strike is called, workers should feel obligated to participate. It doesn't help to say shit like "sorry, but i need a paycheck": EVERYBODY NEEDS A PAYCHECK. The only way we're all going to get a better standard of living (fewer working hours, more pay, more control in the workplace) is through unified collective action.

even to take your fatalistic view (which I don't), there are additional ways to make "The Economy" (aka the capitalists who profit from the smooth-functioning of the system) notice:

1. shut/slow-down roads and transit choke-points
2. block and/or picket entrances to businesses
3. hold large public demonstrations

If you stand in the middle of traffic in front of an airport terminal and refuse to move, you will be arrested in minutes. If 5000 people stand in the middle of traffic in front of an airport terminal, policies change.

Collective action is power.

The role of class-conscious workers is to help make these actions as real as possible in the hope of making the next one actually real. Shooting spitballs on the internet while acting like you're speaking up for the have-nots only undermines these efforts.

Laura Flanders begins her show with the tagline "Where the people who say it can't be done take a backseat to the ones doing it". Guess which side your perspective falls on.

It is only doomed because of naysayer.

If you honestly can't strike because of fear of backlash from your employer, are in a life saving profession, or live paycheck to paycheck-- THAT IS OKAY. Don't feel guilty if you can't. There are other ways to be supportive without this.

But those who are in a position that they can do so, should serious consider doing so. If enough people do it, the disruption in some businesses could effect enough to be noticed.

Second, it is just being floated today for a couple of hours. Give it time to reach people. And some companies are not happy with Trump. Keep this circulation, some may join.

That's the case for many people, which is why Strike's don't work in the US. You can't just go "okay, we're not going to come in lol" unless you're part of a union and even then the union understands the RISKS of doing that.

Taking a sick day isn't going to do anything but waste that sick day when you need it later on this year.
