Portland Retro Gaming Expo
« on: October 17, 2016, 08:38:19 AM »

http://www.retrogamingexpo.com/

The Portland Retro Gaming Expo is some hardcore NERD SHIT and is happening this weekend. As the forum's RETRO GAME EXPERT™ I'm heading out there and dragging demi with me. If you're attending or live in the area let me know!

For those of you who are unfamiliar with PRGE it's one of the biggest retro game conventions in North America and aside from an absolutely massive vendor hall it typically has a lot of sessions with interesting guests and musical performances (lol). For example this year they have the following people:
  • Steve Golson (Ms. Pac-Man)
  • Howard Scott Warshaw (Yars Revenge)
  • Ed Rotberg (Battlezone)
  • Brad Stewart (Asteroids)
  • Joe DeCuir, Tod Frye, Barney Huang (Atari)
  • Ed Fries (Xbox)
  • Takuya Aizu (Inti Creates)
  • Ben Heckendorn (hardware mods)
  • Rebecca Heineman (The Bard's Tale III: Thief of Fate)
  • Chris Kohler (Wired)
  • James Rolfe (AVGN)
  • Loads of random YT dudes

spoiler (click to show/hide)
I might have a chance to pick-up Wonder Project J2 since Great Rumbler sniped that shit from under my nose at the last game convention I went to.  :punch

Thoughts:

- First experience at one of these, and it happened to be (from multiple sources) the "biggest, best" one you could choose to go to
- Freeplay arcade/console was really cool
- Holy fucking shit there are LOTS OF VIDEOGAMES FOR SALE
- Apparently EVERYONE has 5 copies of Earthbound for sale
- And 5 copies of Chrono Trigger
- And 5 copies of ______________ (seriously one vendor had like 10 copies of disc only Suikoden 2) -- if you're wondering why you can hardly find X game anywhere, THEYRE ALL HERE
- The minute you buy a game, you WILL find the next vendor has it in better condition, and for cheaper
- If you can haggle, you are a god here, the money you save will add up (i am not a god, btw)
- Gamers really dont know deodorant
- Lots of thicc bois and thicc dads to ogle
- Panels were cool, most of them just devolved into "ask us questions!" - AVGN was the worst panel easily (and i like the guy's content!) - best panel was Kohler's "retro roadshow" and probably Ed Fries "i'm bored and i spend money to fix old arcade cabs"
- Got to see the "Nintendo PlayStation"
- They also let you touch the "Nintendo PlayStation" which is mind-boggling. The owners of this thing give ZERO fucks about it
- Got to say hi to Sho Nuff, and Chris Kohler (had to remind him who I was, then he chillax'd) - bought Teleroboxer from him because only chris kohler would have teleroboxer (saw Synthizer Patel, but didnt really say hi, felt like he probably wanted to separate bore from IRL)
- Portland has legal weed afaik, so it was common to smell weed
- Quarterworld (where Retronauts did a little meetup) was cool but why the fuck do they charge for the arcade games? Wack (highlight: playing battletoads ARCADE with Kohler and Slime -- and we broke the game, so the guy had to restart the machine and he gave us like 10 credits, which amounted for jack shit for Battletoads)

If you have the chance to attend this or any other similar event, fucking do it. Also bring lots of money. Next time I might go even bigger...

- I only found two copies of Robotrek (maybe there were more hidden on the racks) - I bought mine from some romhacker (John Riggs)

- I only found two copies of Spike McFang - my husbando haggled it down in price because he's so menacing and rugged

- I could find ZERO copies of "Tiny Toons 2: Wackyland" for NES, I have the box etc at home, so I figured I could find a cart for it. NOPE

event sounds cool but i will be forevermad about how it's damn near impossible to find an old video game unless you get it from one of these resellers. too damn expensive to buy some shit thats common enough that you could have bought it for a buck little more than ten years ago

I actually was really disappointed in this. Most of the stuff was lame marketing garbage that sold for ungodly amounts (banners, etc). There was a 20-foot outdoor Gamecube launch vinyl banner that looked like shit and was probably made by a local printer and it went for +$500. It was hilarious seeing manchildren try to out-manchild each other tho.

BTW you got :bow Amazing Island :bow2

And yes this show is incredible, absolutely the best in the USA (if not the world, really).

Here is me getting a signed Bad Dudes print from Marc Ericksen (the guy who illustrated a shitload of classic Atari/NES boxes). He had the original Space Harrier painting with him too :O

Even if you dont want to buy old videogames (or not spend as much), if youre NEARBY IN THE AREA you could definitely have fun in the arcade area or panels. Definitely not worth flying out unless your intention is to buy videogames.

The arcade area doesnt close until midnight (!)

The Portland Retro Gaming Expo is still totally worth going to. But Rolfe typifies the kind of outdated, exclusionary thinking that gives gamers a bad name. The otherwise excellent Portland Retro Gaming Expo—not to mention Portland’s gamers—deserve better.
