Having huge troubles getting into Witcher 3...
« on: November 07, 2016, 07:44:37 AM »
... and I kinda bothers me as I have huge build up for this game.

For the last year or so I was totally committed getting into the whole world of Geralt as back when I played Witcher 2 for the first time I didn't understand most of it and hated that.

So I took my sweet time before starting Witcher 3. I read all the books and played Witcher 1+2. Really liked Witcher 1 by the way. Finished it two times actually.

Now to Witcher 3... I just can't seem to get warm with this one. I mean, the writing is great as ever and the graphics are amazing but like everything else in this game is soooooo boring.

At first I tried to do everything. Crafting, alchemy, exploration, you name it. Took me a while to notice that most of this actually sucks ass. Then I cut out crafting and alchemy and lastly I even started to ignore the exploration. I restarted this game 3 bloody times in hope that I would finally get into it by "playing it right". But I'm still struggling big time.

The combat is boring me to death. The crafting is an annoyance at most, alchemy is just pointless and the exploration kills the quest rewards. At first I started the game on higher difficulty only to get frustrated because the combat become extremely unfair as Geralt's moveset is obviously not tailored to fight multiple enemies yet the game still throws mobs at you all the time. After I lowered the difficulty I noticed how pointless your gear seems to be. I ran around for hours with my starting gear and had no troubles what so ever to defeat enemies. So what's even the point of searching new gear?

The RPG system is shit as well. Never have I been as indifferent to level up notifications as I am in this game. In my current build I have 2 empty slots for skills because everything seems so useless to me. I just don't need anything.

So what remains for me in this game is purely the writing. I am doing my best to play this like an interactive book or something but it's really hard because I still have to slog through that horrible combat and traverse these huge distances (this sign post quick travel middle thing is annoying at best).

Help me Bore. Is there any way to save this game for me? Currently I can only do like 1-2 quests every few days before stashing it again - and it really rubs me the wrong way considering how much time and effort I put into this series.

The Witcher 3 is actually a great game. How far into it are you at all Premium Lager? It takes a little while to get into it, but then later it's pretty dope.

The one thing I don't get with some Witcher 3 fans is the ranting and raving about playing on harder difficulties to have fun.

Do I really want to play on a mode where a pack of wild dogs can eviscerate me because I didn't use buffs and wasn't paying super close attention? Why the fuck is Geralt, someone who has murdered more mystical creatures than anyone else on the planet, getting killed after three dog swipes and bites?

Never made sense to me to make playing The Witcher 3 into some sort of Dark Souls experience.
OH!

The difficulty curve is inverted in that game. It only gets easier. Starting on Death March or the one below, Blood and Broken Boness (?) is a bad idea, because of what you describe. Even random wildlife can destroy you. Once you're fully outfitted and have a nice mutagen setup however, it becomes really easy. I turned it up just to keep it interesting.

I do the same thing in Skyrim, though I won't go to Legendary because everything is so damage spongy.

It's meant to make you use the potions/mutagens like Geralt would do in the novels apparently. People swear by those in the first one but I never used them. :yeshrug

Also this, but that only really worked in the first game, where they left much more room for pre-boss meditation+potion brewing. It was an actual ritual then. In 3, you magically absorb potions and apply sword oils during combat. Which gives you a major edge and makes you almost invincible with some builds (Euphoria), but it's overkill on lower difficulties.

I feel bad for people who can't enjoy the greatest game ever made.

Don't think it's the greatest, but I did buy the complete edition on PS4 just so I could have a physical copy of the game.  :-*

This type of perspective makes a lot more sense to me, where the character build you end up with means you have to turn up the difficulty..

I started on Blood and Broken Bones, after dropping it a difficulty, I'm having a lot more fun and learning how to fight more efficiently.

It's meant to make you use the potions/mutagens like Geralt would do in the novels apparently. People swear by those in the first one but I never used them. :yeshrug

I would be more into alchemy if it revolved less around mindless picking of plants/flowers and spending time in menus. If I find myself in menus more than actually exploring, fighting, and questing, I become instantly turned off.

Can you buy the remaining herbs needed for potions/recipes you know? Like with armorers, how you can buy the remaining parts needed to craft a new piece of armor?
OH!

There are alchemists you can buy ingredients from, yes. The trick is knowing who has what, i.e. look it up so you don't waste your time hopping around the map.

You should have all your most used potions hotkeyed, but it does get annoying to pot up and oil your blade every other encounter. That's as involved as you want it to be, though for humans and the strongest monster fights, you should probably apply the correct oils at the very least.
The most powerful build (Euphoria) is coincidentally set up the way that you don't have to re-apply oils, or drink potions every other fight, because they end up lasting upwards of an hour. Probably intentional, now that I think about it.
