I think you were always overestimating the party split thing, Esch.

Mandark

Probably. I said that the dem coalition won't recover from this long term but that requires a force inside the party that consistently pushes it apart. I don't think the Justice Dems or associated orgs want that or can even achieve that with their current strength. There also aren't social-democratic or socialist parties strong enough to soak up significant amounts of support as well. I've seen a lot of different bernie voters, and you probably know how they'd vote better than I do, but even the hardline ones might have had enough of trump to eat that democratic party shitpile.

It's basically Duverger's Law plus the parties being more ideologically coherent than they used to be.

Third parties are a dead end and the GOP's still the GOP, despite Tucker Carlson's totally sincere efforts to remake it into a workers party. There isn't a big issue that crosscuts parties the way that civil rights or even abortion used to.

tbf easier to tank biden (cost him a tenth of a point in wisconsin or florida or whatever) than to put bernie over the top (boost his numbers by 20 points nationally)

Thinking that the obvious superminority of bernie supporters are going to tilt the election one way or another is asinine. They're in this situation precisely because they do not have the numbers to be a relevant demographic.

The democrats decided to win or lose this election weeks ago when they coalesced behind biden. All 20 bernie supporters abstaining isn't going to influence the Trump v Biden matchup. Bernie bros are a boogieman

There's a weird narrative forming among Centrist dems online that no one showed up to vote for Bernie despite him winning the first 3 states, California, made it to top 2 of the primary while needing the entire moderate wing to coalesce. Can't discount having around $100 million in ads paid for by Bloomberg, et al attacking him prior to Super Tuesday.

Good thing Bernie's policies have broad support among those under 65. Just gotta wait till we all get old and finally show up to vote  :doge

He got a good chunk of the vote! And Biden needs to keep as many of them as possible.

But also he did worse than last time he ran and did not meet expectations that he explicitly set about motivating and engaging with a huge mass of typical non-voters who wouldn't just vote for him, but pressure Joe Manchin et al to vote for M4A.

Also people running attack ads* and marginal candidates dropping out aren't unforseeable power plays. It's a campaign! Come on!

Was Bloomberg even flooding the air with anti-Bernie spots? All the stuff I saw/heard from him was pro-Mike biographical stuff or anti-Trump.

IIRC, a portion of his ads were dedicated to attack Bernie prior to Super Tuesday in those states. I could believe Klob and the rest dropping out before ST, but someone in Butti's position would not have if it were any other primary tbh.

But at this point, Super Tuesday and Bloomberg being in the race honestly feels like it happened a year ago.  :-\

Pete was polling in single digits in CA and TX. His "good" states were VA and MA where he'd poll 3rd or 4th. Wasn't really much polling of NC/AL/TN/AK/OK but do we think he'd not get crushed there too?

He was dead in the water and we all knew it and were having lots of fun pointing it out until he himself admitted it and acted accordingly.

For you Bernie-clingers, the Wisconsin results of his 30 point defeat won't be released until April 13th.

Benjie do you really think that in the middle of a pandemic people would stand in line for 4 hours to vote against Healthcare for all?
I bet your parents taught you that you mean something, that you're here for a reason. My parents taught me a different lesson, dying in the gutter for no reason at all... They taught me the world only makes sense if you force it to.

The decision by Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) to suspend his campaign means former President Obama is about to get back into the political spotlight.

Sources close to Obama and Biden say the two men have spoken “quite frequently,” as one put it, in recent days as Biden pivots to the general election. Obama has also spoken to Sanders in recent days, according to two sources with knowledge of the conversations.

The former president has stayed out of the Democratic primary, but sources say he is anxious to endorse his former vice president, Joe Biden, and become an active player in the general election campaign against President Trump.

Democrats across the country are also ready for his entry.

“IT IS TIME,” Doug Landry, a former Hillary Clinton aide, wrote Wednesday, tweeting a cartoon image of Obama as superman. “RELEASE THE SUPER SURROGATE.”
calls were made, campaigns ended

Less than an hour after Bernie Sanders told supporters he was ending his presidential campaign, dozens of staffers who worked for his opponent four years ago received the same mass email: a link to a Zoom video call scheduled for 4 p.m.

“Invitation: Bye, bye Bernard (HFA celebration toast),” the email to former Hillary Clinton staffers read on early Wednesday afternoon, according to screenshots provided by two people.

“He’s finally gone (again!). Join for a celebratory toast if you can! And yes, you can loop :)

Later on Wednesday, the name of the Zoom call had been changed to a more generic “HFA end of primary celebration toast,” with no mention of Sanders.

By 3:30 p.m., according to recipients, the call was canceled.

Attention turned to missing absentee ballots Wednesday as state officials reported three tubs of them were discovered in a mail processing center and the Milwaukee Election Commission called for an investigation into a separate set of undelivered ballots.

And Fox Point officials said 100 or more ballots a day were returned to the village as undelivered in the week leading up to the election.

The discoveries emerged as would-be voters across the state expressed a host of frustrations about trying to obtain absentee ballots so they could avoid going to the polls during the coronavirus pandemic. Many have said ballots they requested long ago did not arrive by Tuesday, the deadline for getting their ballots postmarked.

...

Meagan Wolfe, the administrator of the Elections Commission, said she had been talking to the U.S. Postal Service about the situation but so far has not determined whether the ballots had been on their way to voters or already filled out and on their way back to clerks.

"We don’t have answers on that at this point," Wolfe said during an online media briefing.

Representatives for the Postal Service did not immediately respond Wednesday to questions about undelivered absentee ballots.

Wait, trade? Who is he trading from the Republican Party for us?

Jennifer Rubin :fbm
:klob
Democrats, aided by the mainstream media, are now putting out two rather disingenuous storylines. First, “No one ever changed the party as much as Sanders.” Second, “Now begins the struggle to win over the Bernie Bros.” It is understandable that some Democrats — eager to avoid a schism similar to that which occurred in 2016 — are falling over themselves to assuage Sanders’s ego, but let’s not get carried away.

The “Bernie changed the party” line suggests that the party did not overwhelmingly choose a center-left successor to President Barack Obama. But it did! And it has rallied around someone who rejected Medicare-for-all, a wealth tax, left-wing isolationism and the entire “capitalism is evil” stance. Sanders got beaten badly week after week, never changing his message. That message simply did not register with more than about 30 percent of the party. Twitter does not represent the party. The party did not shift far left, as many in the media predicted (egged on by the loudest voices on the left). If anything, Biden’s wins show that the heart of the party rests with moderate African Americans — to whom all Americans are indebted for lifting a viable, electable nominee to oust President Trump. Sanders’s “movement” is far smaller than he would have liked us to believe.

As for winning over his followers, consider a recent poll showing that about 15 percent of Sanders’s supporters intend to vote for Trump if Biden is the nominee. It is hard to fathom the mindset of someone who would prefer an unfit narcissist who opposes virtually every principle and value Democrats hold dear to Obama’s vice president. It is of a piece with those who preferred Jill Stein in 2016. There is no reaching such people. Soliciting them is a waste of time.
Quote
There are far bigger challenges for Biden than securing former Sanders voters. He must defeat Republican attempts to suppress the vote (including the GOP’s opposition to voting by mail, which forces voters to choose between their right to vote and risking their lives by voting in person during a pandemic). He must hold Trump to account for his grotesque negligence in responding to the coronavirus, the greatest failure in presidential leadership, and for his stomach-turning corruption. And he must underscore the fundamental difference in values between the parties: Democrats are defenders of the little guy and of reforms that increase their pay, protect their health care and keep them safe.

That’s a tall order, which makes it all the more urgent that Biden not be sidetracked by Bernie Bros’ hurt feelings. There is an election to be won and a country to be saved.
:klob

I'm still on the fence about whether or not I'll force myself to cast a vote between two rapists. Kind of want to know where everyone else is at on this.

It sucks, but taking a step back. Repubs are invariably worse, death cult of capitalism and all.
At the very least, Dems might not have fired pandemic management.

Your vote isn't that important. Vote for Biden, "really" vote for his VP, skip the Presidency, draw a big penis on the ballot, whatever. When you caucused you already participated more than the average person will in the political process anyway.

The real question should be "should I force myself to actively work for [campaign]" not whether you'll cast a ballot or not at the end of the process.

Now me personally, I want to do the most annoying thing possible. So I've volunteered for the Trump campaign and will be doing my best to keep him in office. Purely so that Nintex will be able to continue to do what he does.
