Mitch: "Who is going to pay for this 3 trillion stimulus green deal nonsense from our friends across the aisle? This is not sound fiscal policy and the people should expect better from a responsible government"

Trump: "HEY THERE MCTURTLE HOW ABOUT WE PAINT MOUNT RUSHMORE GOLD AND CALL IT MOUNT TRUMPMORE TO CELEBRATE OUR BIG WIN AGAINST THE PLAGUE"

Said this before, but I think a really underrated political moment was the Republican party almost unanimously opposing Dodd-Frank.

In the wake of the finance industry fucking up so bad that they'd triggered the worst recession since the Great Depression, the GOP figured they could still vote against any sort of reform and not be punished by the electorate. Which was completely insane but also they were right.

This is like the tenth round of conservative ruckus over the Flynn investigation... Is it going to lead to a real overhaul of the entire process and rein the intelligence community in? Or is it all just a bad-faith controversy meant to construct a narrative of corruption?

Quote
Conservative commentator William Kristol explained in an interview for The Post that he finds it impossible to go back to the Republican Party. “Trump’s been renominated, and liberating the party from Trump or Trumpism seems awfully far-fetched,” Kristol said. “Obviously, if he loses in November, things are in more flux. ... But I can’t honestly conceive of working with [Senate Majority Leader] Mitch McConnell and [former Senate majority whip] John Cornyn and [House Minority Leader] Kevin McCarthy.” He added: “I’m just disgusted by what they’ve been doing, really, for the last three years, that I don’t much look forward to that.” (Disclosure: I wrote pieces for Kristol when he was editor of the Weekly Standard and consider him a friend.)

There once was a friendly debate among those who used the NeverTrump moniker about whether the GOP could be “saved” or was worth “saving.” Early in the Trump presidency (if not before), I answered no; many who once spoke of reforming or reviving the party now have come around to the view it is hopeless.

I cannot speak for others, but the reason the Republican Party is not worth saving is that with few exceptions (e.g. Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan, Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker), its members have fully embraced Trump and Trumpism — a noxious brew of nationalism, contempt for truth, xenophobia and an “America First” agenda. Any of these would have sent me fleeing from the party; collectively, they make it impossible to return.

...

The Democrats, to the relief of many NeverTrumpers, made it easy for us in this presidential election. Former vice president Joe Biden is a decent, qualified man who is respectful of objective reality, understands separation of powers and embraces America as a nation founded on a creed (“All men are created equal ...”), not on blood and soil. He is no socialist. We can happily embrace him.

...

Biden will need all the help he can get in developing a short-term response to the pandemic, overseeing development of a vaccine and its fair distribution and managing a sane restoration of the “new normal.” I concur wholeheartedly with Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.), who argues that the pandemic has highlighted gross inequities in our society (manifesting in higher death rates and unemployment for nonwhites) that span many issues (e.g. health care, broadband access). That, too, demands our attention. The necessity to target resources where they are desperately needed should not be a partisan issue. No decent person, let alone someone who considers himself a small-"d" democrat, should tolerate such inequities that literally result in the deaths of our fellow Americans.

...

Finally, many people ask: Are you all big-"D" Democrats now? My answer is “it depends.” I am a Pat Moynihan Democrat, a Scoop Jackson Democrat, an Andrew Cuomo Democrat. I’m not a Bernie Sanders Democrat. So where does that leave me? Where I have been for just about four years: a center-right member of the “Resistance,” an advocate for good governance and internationalism (including free trade and robust legal immigration) and a passionate believer in the American creed. The best answer perhaps to the partisan affiliation question is that it is a time for creative policy and civility, so we will focus on that.

One final point: NeverTrumpers, now NeverRepublicans, should keep their eye on the extraordinary class of female freshmen House centrists (Reps. Abigail Spanberger, Mikie Sherrill, Elaine Luria and others). A lot of those ex-Republicans might decide they are Abigail Spanberger Democrats.

Whole calendar year's been one big Meltdown May so far.

Looked around on the FEC page for Collins' "campaign." No sketchy looking consultant fees and he's not paying himself a salary. The payments to the campaign manager (who made that tweet) are weird, like ~$30k over three months last year and nothing so far in 2020.

Hopefully we get some fun Fyre Fest post-mortems out of it.

Trump is showing the Chinese how to protest and incite a revolution.
When a communist officer goes to their home and says: "Open your door citizen(in Chinese)" they will say: "That is such a nasty question!"
When a state reporter asked them to "Smile for our great country and leader" they will say: "You are fake news!"

Just watch, these things that go viral have a way of getting out in the real world.
Especially the things Trump says and does.

Have you seen how many politicians adopted his 'off the cuff' Twitter behavior and/or waving their hands around as if they're playing a really fucked up Kinect game?

Except for Trump who wanted him as his VP no one in the administration or even the transition team liked Flynn. Which is why no one covered for him, he was cast out almost immediately.
The way I see it, Flynn would've been back to writing op-eds right now if he had kept his job and would've been fired or left within 3 months.

The problems that others faced like Trump not giving a shit during the first 6 months of his presidency and the Priebus/Banon/Kushner civil war would've pushed out Flynn.
Just like when Bolton joined and the only thing Trump ever did was tell everyone how stupid his ideas were and how he wanted to start wars with everybody.

With all positions about three things happened
1) Trump didn't or doesn't care so you could do what you wanted (Rex, Scott, Perry, Carson)
2) Trump cared so Ivanka and Jared were your new boss (Priebus, Mnuchin, Wilbur)
3) Trump thought you did a good job so you got promoted to do all the jobs Jared didn't want until you imploded (Kelly, Mulvaney, Pompeo)

And then there's the characters he keeps around for TV and drama like Kelyanne.

the Erdogan propaganda editorial he wrote that was published immediately after the election was so bizarre, like just transparently bogus argumentation, I was surprised it didn't get flagged more at the time. maybe if I'd made more of a fuss about it on twitter I could've changed history

2024 headline

Quote
DRONE HITS KENNEDY DURING TEXAS TRIP
A newly invented SIA drone went 'rogue' and fired a deadly missile during a training flight at Senator and Democratic candidate for President Joe Kennedy III.
Operator Graham Dulles, grandson of former CIA director Allen Dulles called it a 'freak accident'. Space Force command recorded the attack and warned the Space Intelligence Agency their drone had gone rogue and lethal but it was already too late to intervene.
Supreme Commander Musk tweeted "Oops" and posted a live stream of the incident to his followers. Asked for a comment he replied: "Guess the AI's still need work. Will patch in new update".
This comes after last weeks controversial appointment of General Michael Flynn as head of the SIA, replacing the CIA with an intelligence agency for modern times.

President Trump offered his condolences to the family tweeting: "Sending my best to the entire Kennedy family for losing yet another candidate for President by a 'magic' bullet. Guess luck doesn't run every family!"
Conspiracy theorists pointed their fingers at the President who quickly denied having anything to do with the accident: "I've never met that AI. I've not been involved with any IA I have got a big brain that I use, it is called being smart" Trump said.

Reaching the vehicle, Kennedy turned toward Bowen and responded. “There is an awful lot of opportunity that comes with being a senator from Massachusetts,” he said, “and with due respect to Senator Markey, who is a good man, there’s more to this job than the way you vote and the bills that you file. It comes with an ability to leverage that platform to address the issues we’re talking about and, with due respect to the senator, if you’re not going to leverage that now, given what is at stake for the Democratic Party, for the values that we hold dear in our commonwealth, that have been targeted by this administration literally from day one, if you’re not doing it now, then when?”

Flynn should have gone to jail (and definitely been fired as NSA) for being dumb enough to talk to FBI agents without his lawyer. Especially such an obvious trap.

On the other hand, him getting off entirely makes up for the months of where his plea deal was the smoking gun which meant he was going to reveal EVERYTHING and had flipped to Mueller.

So justice served, also I hope he does get held in contempt for perjury. :american
