For me it is. People say Doom plays like an old school shooter but honestly it doesn't. Old school shooters are great but they don't play like Doom when you actually go back and play them. And modern shooters don't play like that at all.

It borrows things from both schools but it ends up being a unique thing to me in a way that I don't believe an updated version of an existing franchise update does. Of course I haven't played Uncharted 4 so maybe it is doing more than I expect but for me Doom was way more than I expected. Not just from a good game perspective. But in a blending off really old elements with really new elements and creating something that isn't really either.

I'm sure the inevitable new Doom 2 will be a good game also but I have a strong feeling it won't be important in the same way this one was.

I have no idea which FPS I'd label as the best.  Haven't had the time to play enough of all of them, to be honest.  Doom has been amazing from the couple of levels I've played, but the game that really struck me and made me go "holy shit!" was Battlefield One when I started it up.

It's nothing new, but Uncharted 4 was really solid and kept me up until 4am playing it some nights.  That never happens anymore.  Meanwhile Gears seemed like entirely more of the same and I quit playing it pretty quickly.  I was hyped for it but that deflated kind of fast.  None of my friends got it either.  But I still need to go back to it and see if it picks up.  The game seems like it has been forgotten about already. 

What really stands out to me this year are all the lows.    Infinite Warfare being shit, etc.

Those two things you quoted say the same thing. They say just because I reply/make a post doesn't automatically mean that I'm actually bothered in real life or that these things somehow effect me. They say that there's a distance from them because I'm simply posting on a video game forum.

I think Kojima is a big hack. He hasn't made a good game in years and all his complete self serious wank fest shit has been terrible. MGS5 was an awful game in part because Kojima thought it needed to be so serious that it became cringe inducing. Death Stranding looks to be upping that to the extreme and instead of showing something to care about it, all it can show is complete nonsensical try hard "look at this art shit" thats supposed to be taken serious. It's a video game that can't even reveal the game.

Doom is amazing for sure.  It plays perfect and is the best playing FPS I've ever played.  Right now I'm putting it 4th on my GoTY list after Persona 5, Hitman and Watchdogs 2 in that order.  I got no issue with Overwatch.  Looks fun, but not my kind of game.  Also didn't play Witcher 3 or Dark Souls 3 so can't comment on them.  Uncharted 4 probably won't even make my top ten and I'm a biased Uncharted fan who defended the fuck out of U1 vs Gears1.  Uncharted 4 is a good game, but the pacing sucks, too many parts drag and the story was just kinda ok although the dialogue itself was much better and legit.  Combat/Stealth/exploration were all solid but while improved still not amazing.  MP is fun but nothing special.  Very nice graphics and VA.  8.5/10.  It was a good adventure that was pretty forgettable.

Have you tried the arcade mode update? They have some pretty fun 1 versus 1 and 3 versus 3 modes that aren't really objective based. 

I'm more about objective modes myself in shooters nowadays but yeah I could see them adding more stuff that is more based around fun stuff in the arcade.

I mean, sure. But I'd rather it be something like Battlefield or Titanfall (even if I don't really care for Titanfall's brand like Overwatch's) over Overwatch, personally. Overwatch didn't do enough to make me go "wow" like those two. But I haven't played Uncharted 4 yet (no PS4 and won't for a while) so that'd probably be my personal GotY by virtue of liking the other entries in the series (even Uncharted 3, yes) off that list.

This is what I don't get. All I'm doing is posting. This time it happens to be negative. How is that taking anything seriously? How is that being butthurt. The moment I leave the bore none of this means anything. Meanwhile pretty much all of you complain about games like Uncharterd 4 or GAF, but none of you are butthurt or take this seriously? I've said this a million times, but Doom has the same structure and flow as Bayonetta and other cuhrayzee games.  There's a loop of light exploration -> enemy arena -> repeat.  The enemy arenas gradually escalate in difficulty and there is a light upgrade system.

It isn't a perfect 1:1 comparison, but it probably explains why I loved the game so much when I normally hate FPS.

Dave Lang was putting the awards on blast saying he's salty and would have been happy to see Pokken or KOF win but that decision was bullshit (And they are rumored to be co-developing the UMvC3 port with QLOC so they are even putting Capcom on blast while working with Capcom).

But yeah, underwhelming, but the right results in the right areas except fighting games. Overwatch is a deserved GOTY.

Despite all its flaws and launch shenanigans...I would still say that SFV is the best fighting game released this year.  LOL, Pokken.  KOF XIV gets my vote for best "comeback" game though.  I love that they are committed to improving it...the visual boost it's getting is looking good.

I find that as I get older, I have less and less interest in these huge multi-hour adventure games and RPGs.  Just give me some good arcade-style fun.
