Thought it was going to be awesome the last month or so, but did have my grievances and worries before (mostly around E3). If you bothered to pay attention to the previews the press were gushing over last month none of this should honestly be much of a surprise. :yeshrug

Looking at responses most people surprised they like the game so much did not bother to read nor watch previews of the game last month when the press got to play 15 or so hours of the game. When I posted quotes and stuff people like mormapope completely ignored it while embracing their own perspective.

Essentially, Demi was right. Lots of people wanted this game to fail without any actual knowledge on how the game is. Though to be fair, releasing the Platinum demo and the Titan e3 demo didn't do any favors.

I was the most wrong.

Just cruising the country side with your bros on chocobos was worth the price of admission.

the press were gushing

Ehh, gaming press previews almost always gush something fierce over big budget games, especially ones from storied franchises/developers. I wouldn't really correlate that to the end product's quality.

Not very it seems. I never stopped thinking it looked awesome since the re-reveal, though I did think it might pull an MGSV and be light on story and have a lame finale.

In this case of this game, I don't think this is the case. Especially since the press were hyper critical of it earlier this year when the Titan demo dropped at E3 and the awful Platinum demo. Either way, the press played 15 hours and a lot of their footage was released. Polygon for instance put up an hour long preview video of various non-spoiler moments. The game looked amazing and I knew that by watching previews and reading previews that the press weren't up their ass. But I can't blame people for not having faith.

For good and bad, it's exactly what I thought it was going to be.

I thought the lack of cinematics and a cinematic flair would lead to a lack of cutscenes and some pretty poorly directed ones. I was right.

I thought the combat would be fun, probably better than most open world rpgs, but still wonky. It is, but it also requires a bit more then simply mashing the attack button.

I thought the characters would be fun and enjoyable and they really are.

The open world would probably be empty and boring, but the road trip angle would make the open world be more like Mafia 2 or LA Noire where its there for atmosphere and immersion. In the end it really is and the road trip angle is well done and unique.

I'm not done with it, but I doubt it will top my favorites. I like it and really enjoy it, but it is missing those awesome FF monuments and scenes. The story telling is also a bit more choppy then I'd like. Jesus, more cutscenes and story would really help.

So far its:
X-XII-VI-XIII-XV-VIII-XIV-IX-VII-IV and then the others except XI which I haven't played much.

the more important question is, was this a satisfactory conclusion to Fabula Nova Crystallis Final Fantasy?

Pleasantly surprised by how much I'm enjoying it

Expectations for 16 are really high, now that it won't be a salvage job

Hope they don't let toriyama or nomura ruin things again

that and playonline. which, i mean, both sucked, but damn the man still knew how to make great games. think of how different square might've turned out if he stayed.

My main complaint about the game was and still is the battle system, so I was right. Preference thing for me.

I remember someone posted a "review" in the other thread where the "reviewer" seemed to care more about finding a good husbando more than playing a video game.

I'll admit, I was like "Yeah, no. No more final fantasy for me. The best days are behind it. Not interested."

After reading people's impressions I have to admit my interest is piqued.

I guess I was wrong. I did'nt expect it to be as disappointing as it is. It's not a bad game and the open world part is still decent. But they had the perfect means and ideas to tell an actual story despite being open world and they failed.

Urgency is always a problem in open worlds, but XV had the means to avoid that. It could have been an easy going travel story. Hang out with your buds, establish the personalties of the characters and the quirks of the world. Instead it chose to quickly reveal the Insomnia invasion. Which really should have happen until mid game. Though, even if you weren't going to be there for it, the game really should have started there. Where we see a little of the world, are introduced to the supporting cast, actually get a feel for Regis, and see Noctis as  the unenthused prince he should be at the beginning. But find we did'nt and fine we meet the strange lack or urgency in spite of the revelation. Still, after that it would have been fine to bum around as you still have to follow and find Luna and interact with some of the Summons. Maybe actually have mini episodes with some of the villains.

And then after this we could have switched to the more linear part of the 2nd half. Still though, the stay in Altissa should have been longer as to not make it feel pointless. Maybe explore around and about the the area. Actually interact with Ravus and hell Luna. Actually develop these two important characters and give some actual meaning. Get an actual feel and see what the Empire is up to here.

Then traveling to the other areas by train could have happen, but it shouldn't have felt so rushed. You should have had some mini episodes in the areas. Make them small little Regions unto themselves. Have Cor actually show up and be a character. have Vestal be up to some strange experiments at that place where you get the Katana. Have actual story and worldbuilding, just not rush to the ending.

Mine too, which is rare for FF.  But then I read that the game is "unfinished" and a ton more content is being patched in.  So maybe I'll see where things are in a year.  Probably won't care by that point, though.  Persona 5 and Mass Effect are next year.
