LET'S TRY TO FIGURE OUT BATTLEFIELD 1'S RESOLUTION SCALE
« on: December 14, 2016, 10:02:59 PM »
So apparently BF1's resolution scale config is weird. Some are saying that setting it to 100 basically doubles the internal renderer. This is crazy because every other game has always had 100 = native res. Some are saying that 42 is actually native res. But others say this is only the beta and it's fixed now. Conflicting reports all over the place. Lets try to get to the bottom of this.

After getting my GTX 1070, I've been enjoying the increased performance on all my games, but I feel like I'm bottlenecking my system in a few very specific areas. Games like Battlefield are just not as smooth as I want them to be and I think some of my parts are showing their age. Right now the 1070 is the most powerful piece of hardware so I wanna go through and refresh all the important parts.

Here's what I got right now:

-CPU
Intel Core i7 3770K @ 3.50GHz
Ivy Bridge 22nm Technology

-RAM
16.0GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 666MHz (9-9-9-24)

-Motherboard
ASUSTeK COMPUTER INC. P8Z77-V (LGA1155)

-Graphics
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 (EVGA)

I'll be wanting to refresh the mobo, RAM, and CPU to bring them up to par. Right now I'm thinking of an i7 6700k Skylake CPU, some DDR4 3000 RAM, and whatever decent LGA1151 mobo I can find.

I may also throw in a newer power supply in the mix to factor in the potential increase of power. I already have a case and all the rest so it's strictly just that.

Anyone have any thoughts? Sound like a good plan?

Battlefield should run fine on that?

It runs better than it did prior to the GPU upgrade, but I really can't get it locked to 60fps. And I'm not sure what exactly is the cause honestly.

100, everything set to ultra. I figured something was bottlenecking me because it should be running much more consistently than it is. Didn't even think something else could be an issue.

IIRC, the beta had it at 100 as well and you want to set it to like 40 or so due to the scale being a "superscale"/downsampling resolution.

That should fix your frame issues.

Wait, isn't 100 the default because it's "100% res scale" as in, the scale is the same as your output res? I'm playing at 1080p. If I lower it I'll be basically playing the game with a lower internal renderer.

Shit, just did some googling and apparently that's wrong. WTF? That's super stupid. I don't think I've ever seen it done that way. Nearly every game I've ever played has 100 = your native res.

Yeah, apparently 50% is native? Or not? Doesn't the setting itself clarify it?

In the beta I ran into the same problem, only it defaulted to 42% or something.

It appears it's 100% after all? Either way, this performance guide seems to be decent, maybe worth a shot before you spend big bucks on an incremental upgrad shortly before new tech is out:
http://www.pcgamer.com/battlefield-1-performance-analysis/

Try this console command to see what you're rendering at:

Render.DrawScreenInfo 1

edit: Yes, do that. b

I don't think it specifically says. Everything I can find that claims that 42 = native res is from the beta.

Some say it's fixed, some say it isn't LOL.

You can check by pulling up the console and typing this in: render.drawscreeninfo 1

I'll give it a try when I get home later.

I'm seeing conflicting reports about the resolution scale stuff.

I just remember reading that BF1 in particular has some weird resolution scaling going on and that most people will need to drop it.

What's funny is that BF4 did similar, but was off by default. And it was listed as a resolution downscale. BF1's isn't. :lol Game devs taking one step forward for every two steps backward and all that.

I can confirm that 100 resolution scale is your native res.

Also I turned off DX12 in BF1 and it runs a lot better.
