Rental car advice needed

I'm visiting San Jose for the holidays. I need to bag a rental car, but everything seemed crazy expensive. Maybe I'm old and stingy, but 14 days' worth of a Carolla for $1250 before insurance seems like bullshit.

Any advice on renting a vehicle, boritos?

Yes, renting even a Yaris for 2 weeks will be pretty expensive. Are you staying in SJ or do you need to go someplace far from there?

I rented VW Bug in miami and it was $60 a day.

I usually use kayak or hotwire and get something for around $40/day (I don't get insurance). Holidays might make it a little harder depending on your pickup and drop off days. If you use Turo you can probably find the cheapest rates but I have no idea whether they offer insurance.

If you get bored here I offer to get you drunk and home safely.

Only advice I can give you is - destination fees will fuck you up the ass if you have them. And use AAA discounts if you're a member.

Check with your car insurer and make sure you on't need to buy rental insurance - many car insurances cover rentals.

Try and reserve a rental through expedia or one of those types of sites. Many times you'll get cars for $20-$40 a day!

You wont pay less than $500.  But you should get around that. Typically in San Jose a week's rental is $258.

The uber thing is always the best option. I'm amazed that a lot of people don't even consider it. Couple years ago I went to Chicago with some co-workers: one old guy, one young lady. When me and the chick saw the rental prices we immediately were like ok, just download the Uber app and ride to a rental place. Old dude was stubborn as fuck and didn't feel "comfortable" doing Uber.


We gave him dap and hopped in the same Uber


He never told me exactly how much he paid but I know it was a lot due to how pissed he was.

Thanks, I had not heard of Kayak before.

Using the site, I see discrepancy between your estimate and my own, and then Puppy's post(s) about airport rental fee increases has let me know that I've been doing it wrong previously. It makes sense that the airport charges a premium, but I had not ever even thought about it.

At this point, I'm looking at sticking with Uber/Lyft or borrowing a car from my sister.

The airport does have an extra fee but it's important to focus on the "out the door" price, sometimes it may be cheaper than the other local rental places simply because they handle a lot of volume (no hard and fast rule) . I've owned a decade old European car so I'm kind of an expert when it comes to rentals.
