NO.

I almost got sucked in during the season two marathon on SciFi while I was sitting at home due to a snow day. I already watch enough TV.

NO FUCKING MORE.

I'm looking at the actors who played the doctor, it is sort of crazy how most of them only last 3-4 years except for the fourth doctor who had a longer then normal run.  I don't think there is any TV show that has had so many different lead actor changes:

1. First Doctor, played by William Hartnell (1963–1966)
2. Second Doctor, played by Patrick Troughton (1966–1969)
3. Third Doctor, played by Jon Pertwee (1970–1974)
4. Fourth Doctor, played by Tom Baker (1974–1981)
5. Fifth Doctor, played by Peter Davison (1981–1984)
6. Sixth Doctor, played by Colin Baker (1984–1986)
7. Seventh Doctor, played by Sylvester McCoy (1987–1989, 1996)
8. Eighth Doctor, played by Paul McGann (1996)
9. Ninth Doctor, played by Christopher Eccleston (2005)
10. Tenth Doctor, played by David Tennant (2005–present)

What's up with the female doctor? I used to see random episodes with her on PBS a long time ago.

What's up with the female doctor? I used to see random episodes with her on PBS a long time ago.

That was Romana, a female Time Lord ("Time Lady").  She was a companion of the Fourth Doctor.  In the current series, The Doctor is the last of the Time Lords.  His race has been destroyed in the Time Wars, where the Doctor did something central (but never explained) that causes him great discomfort to think about.  This action possibly destroyed the Dalek race.  The Daleks, of course, managed to come back via breaking from one dimension into our dimension by using a "void ship" used to travel between dimensions.  Previous to the latest series, Doctor Who had never pulled the alternate dimensions card.

There was also a native universe Dalek that survived the Time Wars, he is the subject of the season 1 episode Dalek.

Yeah, the "regeneration" theme made in the first season to explain different actors with different personalities playing the same role was a pretty great idea.  We are on the 10th of 13 Doctors, but it has been previously established earlier in the series that one Time Lord can "steal" regenerations from another.  This is, however, an evil act, and our Doctor is not evil.  Also, he'd need a Time Lord to steal the lives from.

Tom Baker > all other Doctors.  I remember watching him on PBS as a kid.  That show was what sparked my love of both sci fi and all things British.

The Third Doctor was really good, too, and Drinky said he had good memories of Sylvester McCoy (I think he was drunk!).

Both Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant are some of the better Doctors in the show's history, too, although they have suffered a bit at the hands of writers trying to figure out how the show should be revived, exactly.

Sylvester McCoy is awful. I tried to rewatch a few McCoy eps, and they are atrocious. I was drunk, and possibly syphilitic to boot.

Tom Baker uber alles.

Interesting; I didn't know there were like 8 previous doctors. Have they all been featured in shows, or through flashbacks? How long has this show been around lol, and for how many seasons

It's been on since 1963.  There are like 750 episodes.  It was taken off the air in 1989 (1963-89 = the first 7 doctors), came back as a TV movie/pilot in 96 (the Eighth Doctor), and the series was successfully revived in 2004 (1st Season - Ninth Doctor, 2nd-3rd - Tenth Doctor, played by Barty Crouch Jr from Harry Potter 4!).

So yes, they've all been featured in shows.

I dunno if anyone shows the old episode anymore in the US.  They used to be staples of late night PBS.  The new series is carried by the SciFi Channel.

Hm, I want to watch this because it sounds interesting, but I checked and any DVD's I find of it are ridiculously expensive.  I mean, the price really isn't an issue, I paid 120 dollars for one season of the Sopranos on HD DVD  lolz.  I just don't know if I'll like it.  :(  I'm so torn.

Yeah, BBC DVD of currently ongoing shows are pretty ridiculous.  BBC is basically public television, so they gouge where they can.

Last I saw, in December, SciFi was showing both seasons fairly regularly.  It's fairly easy to get into, as long as you don't jump in on the middle of a 2 part episode.  The basic concept is:

1) The Doctor is a Time Lord that travels around in his time-traveling police box (TARDIS).  He ends up in random places sometimes because he doesn't have full control over it.
2) He likes traveling with companions.  Usually a human female.  In the series on SciFi, this girl is Rose, although he does take on additional companions at certain points.
3) The show is cheap and campy as fuck and generally filled with plot holes.  Star Trek style, deus ex machina techno babble is the rule of the game, and it saves everyone numerous times.  Whenever things are particularly dire, The Doctor reveals some new power or ability of the Sonic Screwdriver or the TARDIS, or the Psychic Paper, or a new Time Lord power.  The show is generally a light-hearted adventure.

It sounds like good stuff.  I just have one question.  Is Rose hot?  I saw one of your threads earlier and you were talking about a specific episode with lots of Rose cleavage.  Any pics?  This will push me over the edge in buying it.

Actually I was kidding about her breasts being fantastic.

She has her moments.  She's generally pretty cute, although some people don't find her very attractive.

Just check it out on TV or torrent some episodes (I'll recommend!).  The show is fairly divisive.

Well, I already bought some sets.  lolz  :(

But I'll torrent some to see exactly what I'm getting myself into.  I need a DVR, I'm never home to actually watch TV.  :(

From season 1, The End of the World and Father's Day are good stand alones.

From season 2, The Girl in the Fireplace (probably my favorite single ep of the new seasons), and The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit (a nice space horrory pair of episodes)
