Determined to go into my 30s with no major debt
« on: January 04, 2017, 12:48:57 PM »
I'm 28 right now. I've made a bunch of mistakes in my 20's. I still spend slightly beyond my means and rely heavily on credit card debt. But I've been getting better. I try to never owe more than a grand and to pay it off as quickly as possible. The problem is I has a few old balances that have been following me around.

Then there's the student loans. And my car loan.

Last month I started digging in and I discovered that if keep on the same payment track I'll have all my student loans payed off by 2019, roughly around the same time my car will be paid off. That's a massive amount of cash suddenly going back into my pocket.

This year I will be aggressively attacking my lingering credit card debt and I intend to pay it all off. If I can do that this year I'll have a clear path to my goal. I should be able to go into my 30's with no major debt. Suddenly I'll be able to save money aggressively and invest in my future.

Does anyone have any tips for me?

Sounds like you're doing it right, and realizing what a scam credit cars are earlier than most people.

Make a budget if you haven't already. Be nice to yourself and set aside a reasonable amount of recreational spend-able money, and enjoy that money without guilt. It will help you maintain your budget without resenting it.

Yeah. Be single

Then you can run up as much debt as you want, and just die and take it all with you. :aah

Buy a house and learn to embrace debt

Make a budget and stick to it. I mean, don't stop living but live within your means. Can you consolidate all your CC debts into one?

And once you're paid off, pay off your credit card in full every month. The only debt we've got is our mortgage.

Get a girlfriend with students loans up the wazoo.

You can be poor together.

Right now I'm trying to get some credit and whatnot so I often think "I should have gotten a credit card much earlier" but I'm kinda glad I didn't, I'm sure I would have cocked it up and racked up a lot of debt.

Pretty happy with my decision to attend community college and not own a car, though. Money pits. :yuck

My issue right now is learning to sock more money away. Have a Wealthfront account that auto-deposits every month, but I'm not sure if that's enough at this point. 401k is in a good spot, though.

I was debt free before I hit 30. Then I bought a house. Maybe I'll be debt free again at 50.

I'm still toying around with the idea of getting a Wealthfront account.

Probably too soon to tell but... how are you liking it so far?   :doge

Eh it's basically a savings account with better interest and it's harder to make withdrawals from (which is a good thing in my case, I dip into savings for trivial shit way too often and need to learn better budgeting.) :yeshrug I've made progress at least. Started using Mint on January 1st last year and it's been really revealing seeing where all my money goes.

Not sure it's benji approved though. :doge

Invest in a vasectomy. 400 dollars now but will save you a 100's of thousands of dollars in the next 20 years.
