Nioh
« on: February 05, 2017, 03:29:36 PM »

Release date: February 7, 2017
Developer: Team Ninja
Genre: Ninja Gaiden Souls :p
Platform: PlayStation 4
Publishers: Koei Tecmo, Sony Interactive Entertainment

Currently 87% on Metacritic

The Alpha and Beta were both great.  I haven't bought a Team Ninja game since Ninja Gaiden Black but this looks to be the real deal.

Yeah, really looking forward to it.  Reviews are pretty positive and the demos have great reception.  Not sure if I'll play this or Dark Souls 3 first (since DLC2 is almost out), but will definitely be a good year for Souls gaming and will hopefully last until /fingers crossed Bloodborne 2 next year.

That being said, I probably won't get to it for a few months.  Which is good because then all the guides will be out like Souls games ;)

I'm day one on this.  I love the co-op and helping other players kill bosses.  This should hold me over until Mass Effect.

Not sure what you think looks off but we've had 3 demos.  Can confirm it plays well.

I didn't give two shits about this game until after I had it in my hands and played the Alpha.

But man oh man was I a believer after that :whew

How co-op is the co-op?  I haven't paid attention.  Is it like Souls?  I like how in Souls games I can be multiple years later to the game and still find people for a boss by ringing a bell.

There are two types of co-op-
  • Souls co-op where you summon or offer yourself up as a summon and both players fight in the summoner's world until death or the boss is defeated. Can be initiated by a summoner at any shrine in a level as long as you have the proper consumable.  You offer yourself up for summoning at the map screen.
  • A shared level between two players.  You start the level from the very beginning. Both players are on equal footing (basically both are considered the "host") and can revive each other. There is a shared co-op "revive" life bar separate from the normal life bar.  Once that co-op bar is depleted after a certain number of downs, it is considered a mission failure and both players need to start over.

Basically it felt like the Souls co-op was for playing with randoms and quick sessions.  The shared level felt like more of a time investment and something to do with friends and players you can trust.

This game just had to come out in a packed season when I'm basically broke  :'(

Yeah, I'm passing on it for now.  Have too much to play as it is and don't need another (primarily) single-player game that's gonna just sit there for months on end unplayed.  Will see what people think of it in a few months' time or pick it up on the cheap later on.

That intro gave me PS2 flashbacks. These last few weeks/months have been amazing for Japanese games.

I finished the first level and it was really good.

It's very Bloodborne, complete with the level feeling like a mini-Souls level. I mean it even had you making level shortcuts. First boss was actually pretty decent. At first I actually thought the best strat was to stay close, but his swing move would mess me up. It was a more methodical get in and get out and then watch what he does. Pretty good so far.

Played the first level and it was really good.  Coming from the Alpha this is awesome.  The movement and combat is so fluid.  It's souls formula + fluid character action movement/combat.  Awesome.  Looks great on 60fps/1080p Pro mode as well.

The only thing is that Let it Die added THE BEST NEW FEATURE ever for dungeon crawlers and I wish every one at this point will copy it.  Being able to pick up a piece of equipment and instantly equip it with a single button press (aka cut out the menu) is so good it sucks going back to having to open the menu and equip the new item.

What weapons are you guys using?  I'm going katana for humans and spear for Oni.  It seems to be working so far. Bosses have been pretty varied and I have had to change up my weapons and animal spirit to account for elemental resistances.

I'm on main mission 6 I think and they're getting pretty long.  The last one took me over an hour and a half not counting the boss.

For me it's the way Williams moves. It seems... clunky? Not sure how to put it exactly. Quite different from Soulsborne games, but also fairly common in japanese action games (old MGS, RE etc).

Still torn on whether to get it or not. Not super fan of the heavy emphasis on loot. Maybe I'll wait for a price cut.

Jim Sterling gave it a 10/10 (noting that he doesn't do this often) and was gushing all over it in a recent video.  It really sold me, but then he went into the blacksmithing stuff and I started losing interest.

I'll try to understand where you're coming from.  Yes, character action games like Ninja Gaiden DMC are not realistic.  Nobody moves like bayoneta in real life.  Souls games have slower and more realistic movement.

That being said, I'll take fluid fast NG movement in action game over slow realistic movement any day of the week.  The movement here is super fucking good and feels great.  From the very start it's the one area that jumps out as as amazing.  It feels like what From was trying to do with Bloodborne but far better in making a Souls game that moves and controls like a real action game.

I wasn't really talking about speed. It's more in the way the characters moves. Feels a bit... stiff? Tanky? Basically, unnatural.

Still debating getting it now. Watched bits of footage, and I'm not sure what to think of the Ki pulse mechanic. It's a good idea on paper, but I feel like it could get tiring, like a permanent QTE. Arguably Soulsborne games have it with parry, but in that case it's a lot more of a risk/reward situation, while in Nioh it seems like if you get it wrong, you can still just roll/dodge away and that's that.

I haven't watched the video, but you can more or less ignore the blacksmith stuff until way later.  I've only been using her to sell stuff,  change the appearance of my armor (super cheap) or to soul match a weapon I like it order to level it up.

All the forging and rerolling of special stats is a bit of a waste of money and resources until you're late game.  New weapons and armor drop at a high rate, there is no reason to craft or reroll stats because you'll probably find much better gear on the next mission for free.

how the hell did this game turn out so good? Its been in the oven since 2004. They scrapped the whole project twice. And yet the final game bears no signs of the development quagmire that it absolutely was.

amazing.

The other two scrapped versions didn't sound all that interesting, especially the Omega Force version/Musou clone.

I'm glad they handed it off to Team Ninja. It is pretty clear Nioh was crafted with a lot of care and attention and there is also a surprising amount of content. Someone at the top really wanted this game to succeed.

Yeah, most surprising thing is that Team Ninja actually made a good game, that's better than good, it's great, without Itagaki.
Only took 10 years and copying Souls but hey, in the end they did it and the game rocks!

I kinda hope this means they'll manage to make other great games and less bad games now that they've found their groove.

Only put in a couple of hours, so bear that in mind, but so far:

- I like the combat. Like Bloodborne on roids. Fast and smooth. Although it can get on the mashy side.

- I don't like the way William "turns". Will get some getting used to I suppose. So that's what I meant in previous posts, now that I try it for myself.

- Not so hot graphically, but acceptable, and 60fps smoothness is a plus

- TOO MUCH LOOT. Seriously. Makes gear feel like consumables. I prefer DS/BB's approach.

- Skill tree is a welcome addition and can increase build diversity, compared to soulsborne where it's mostly tied to weapons. Some stuff is questionable though, like putting parries behind a "paywall" or multiple identical skills to unlock for each stance and each weapon. Feels like padding, I wish they had been a bit more creative with it.

Make sure to disassamble any white and yellow ( maybe even blue? ) loot if you arent using it. You can hold triangle while gling through your item list to select everything that you highlight, makes it easy peasy.

I only bother with purple gear now

Yeah I'm not too keen on the level design. Shortcut porn works in Souls because all the levels are part of a (mostly) cohesive whole and you're always discovering more and more of this big map. Opening up a shortcut makes the world feel connected. Climbing up the ladder from the Forbidden Woods in Bloodborne and into the very start of the game is a holy shit moment because it was unexpected and opened up a new area previous unaccessible.

Opening up a door back to a shrine you were just at 2 minutes ago feels more like busy work than anything after the 50th time. Especially since there are many of them per mission and all the shortcuts reset if you decide to rerun it.

This game does have some very good level design but I think the quality can be inconsistent and the "bad" ones become a bit monotonous. For example, I love most of the outdoor environments because they're more sprawling and you have a better sense of where you are and can see other sections of the level.  You know, like "Oh cool, from the top of this hill I can see where I started the mission" type of thing.  The castle/interior stuff was novel for a while (like the ninja building and the bathhouse were both neat) but now some of the levels are wearing on me or feeling kind of samey.  It was probably The Defiled Castle where I started to get sick of the interior maze stuff. Especially annoying when you accidentally trigger a boss behind what looked like a normal door and you didn't get to explore those other paths yet.

edited to clarify some stuff.

I think the build variety will keep this game alive for a long time. You should be fine to pick it up for $20 bucks down the line and it should still have a good size community for co-op and whatnot.

Also fuck America's broken ass health care system.
