Recommend me a car with these specs and this budget
« on: February 17, 2017, 08:19:03 AM »
Never had a car before and now I'm browsing for one. Wife set a budget for 21/28k USD max for this.

Now this wouldn't be a problem if this wasn't Denmark. Let me explain costs of cars in Denmark.

Toyota Prius USA: 25k USD
Toyota Prius Denmark: 59k USD

Yep. The tax and registration fee are 175% on top of the original car price.

What I want in a car is:
+large boot (400+ liters)
+all the safety equipment like ABS, ESP, and Active Collision Avoidance
+economic to drive

So far I've found one car that fits the bill

Skoda Fabia Combi - 27k USD

Ok, I'm confused on the math. You're looking around 13k USD.

EDM is much different than ours, but how about the Opel Astra Sports Tourer? I just looked what the last Top Gear "reasonably priced car" was and saw they had a slightly upgraded version that looks pretty nice and fits your requirements. I think I'd want a German car over a Czech one.

Oh, looks like a Honda Fit is in your price range too. I have had one for four years and love it:

Skoda are part of the VW group and I believe use VW platforms for every model, much like Spain's Seat.

Also, the Czech are honorary Germans. :shh

Skoda is about as german as Opel though, uses largely VW parts.

What about the Octavia, also from Skoda? Just as "sexy" as his smaller brother but bigger, more extras, smoother running and should still be in your price range.

Once you can buy something less Family Man, it'll be driving itself anyway.

All right Dawg I got you:

http://m.dba.dk/mazda-6-22-sky-d-150-vision/id-504481077/

It's about $30k USD according to Google currency conversion so it's a little more than your budget but that's why you haggle. I have a very similar version of this car except for the hatchback and diesel aspects, but I can confirm it's reliable, fun, comfortable, and top of its class in safety.

The one issue is that you have to negotiate him down a bit and it's got a lot of the options you would want like navigation and blind spot monitoring. Do some research on the Danish version of KBB/Edmunds to know what the fair purchase price is and either claim your wife doesn't like cloth seats because of the baby or just be honest about the 28k max. The seller will probably meet you at that since most people list the car for 10% more than they'll accept. Also you may want to tell your wife that thing about the safety rating.

BTW the Danish word for cruise control (fartpilot) is oddly fitting.

This. If you're wanting something nice, you're going to have to go to like $30K. The Prius is "alright" but for your Polish money, that's not worth it being cheap. And it feels like your wife is handicapping you.

What's up with the price? The Octavia is starting at 18k and goes up to 30k in Germany? I know Denmark is crazy expensive but this still seems too much? What is keeping you from buying your car in another country and how do Denmark s car dealers get away with those prices?

Just looked it up, the basic model of the prius is 28k over here.

The price is because of a registration fee of 150%/180% on top of the car, plus the usual 25% VAT.

If you bring in a car from abroad you will still have to pay this fee based on the base danish price of the model. So buying abroad will actually cost more probably.

That said the average salary here is 33% higher then in germany, but this is still bonkers and prob one of the things that inances one of the greatest welfare states in the world (free heathcare, education). So I get it, but it still feels insane I will buy a Skoda Fabia prob instead of a Toyota Prius  :lol

For all their progressiveness you'd think they at least lower the registration fee for hybrids and electrics

Im convincing my wife that I should have a 14k bigger budget so we can get a hybrid.

We were supposed to get solar panels but I did a 10 year calculation that shows a hybrid will shave off more co2 footprint then a regular car + solar panels for our home.

I think I might win this lads

:bow math :bow2
