Remind me: Jaguar isn't x86? I'm trying to understand why they would say "custom x86" instead of just naming the chip or whatever. :lol

Graphics look the same as Forza 5 or 6: Apex on PC to me. :yeshrug

Well, sure.  No point in buying one of these things with a good PC, since MS is releasing everything on PC anyway.

But where are the games?  It feels like Microsoft has nothing in the pipeline apart from the ever-delayed Crackdown.

That's been their problem since like... the 360 dude. :doge The only difference is last gen they had the ability to "moneyhat" (ugh) "exclusive" early-releases. They don't this gen after the PS4 pre-hype and their misfire on TVTVTVTVTVTVTV... and other factors.

It's nice that "Scorpio" is more powerful than their previous console and the PS4, but: Why should consumers care about that? Outside of like GAF most Joe Sixpacks won't care about that and will still pick up a PS4 instead because of their "TVTVTVTVTVTVTVTVTV" pre-release hype for the original console.

Not that impressive really, the entire roof of that building on the left looks really flat.

And is that kind of IN YOUR FACE product placement going to be a requirement? If so...

A UHD player that can play games? Interesting.

Any price speculation yet? I'm guessing $499 to start.

That's the problem in a nutshell for Microsoft. Outside of the handful of people who really care about graphics, I see no way that the Scorpio [especially at a premium price] is going to rejuvenate the Xbone's sales and put it on even footing with the PS4 [PS4 has sold 55+ million and the 'Bone is probably slightly less than half that].

That's just a quick port. I'm sure they'll put more effort into it when they build with that power in mind.

I feel like lessons like the New 3DS and the PS4 Pro should tell us that these hardware bumps are dumb. You still have to develop the game with the worst version of the hardware in mind. Also you still need games. Does Microsoft even have first party studios besides Gears/Forza/Halo?
NO

The one thing of note that came to mind with the extra RAM and speed on it is unlike the Pro this thing might able to actually pull off 4K closer to native. Or at least the 1440p checkerboard that DF suggests is indistinguishable on most TV's.

People seem to forget the Pro (like the Bone and original PS4) only can use 5.5GB or something of its RAM along with corresponding bandwidth, it was always going to be an extra crunch to fit those way larger frames.

The Digital Foundry guy said it was Forza 6 that they ported in just two days and without optimizations. Not 7. They then introduced the ultra settings from F6 Apex on PC and were getting 88% without optimization and still locked 4k 60FPS. It's an interesting video because he discusses what MS are doing and notes that they have additional hardware on the CPU and GPU to reduce load and even a hardware implementation of DX12 to further reduce overhead. It's fascinating how they are doing it.

Does the "custom" in "custom x86" have meaning?
I'm illiterate at this level of computing detail, but how does that compare to the PS3's cell processor being a bitch to work with? Or is that a completely different comparison?

The most important part is that they integrated a bunch of DX12 instructions into hardware so the CPU doesn't get bogged down with draw calls. And higher clockspeed. Otherwise probably still Jaguar based at its core.

He talks about it in the video, it's basically still the same Jaguar cores except Microsoft has done their own customizations to overall die since release of the Bone. They didn't just clock it up like Sony did. One example he gives is that because it now has some extra hardware for DX12 calls rather than the CPU going through a thousand steps to prepare the draw call to send to the GPU it recognizes it and can do it in like ten. Also has other similar built-in operations to basically recognize things in advance since it's a closed box rather than just letting it grind it out.

It's like an actual secret sauce this time.

They invited the British dude from a series of console tech YouTube videos to their office, told him all about it and now he's making videos about what they said. Because that's probably the actual market for a specs announcement.

Said they are waiting for E3 for that. Lame when they could have just thrown out a teaser trailer for the new Forza running on Scorpio.

All they have till then is Phantom Dust Remastered (The opposite of lame and everyone needs to buy it) soon and State Of Decay 2, Crackdown 3 and Sea Of Thieves later on.

The only exclusive game from MS I'm looking forward to now is (RIP Scalebound) State of Decay 2 and I can buy that on PC.

 :idont

Unless they untether this from Xbone and make it a legit next generation console with exclusive content, I don't see the point. I am interested in 360 BC but I'll probably just wait for the Xbox One S to drop in price.

Not bad if you're coming from just having a XB1. As were at that point in the gen where these games are beginning to look rough on OG Xbox Ones and PS4's. Happy with these mid gen console upgrades. I mean devs don't like new generations in the first 2 years as it means a reset and bigger devs waiting for larger install bases before releasing games. Now we have the option to upgrade to a more powerful system if we wish or get the base consoles. Everyone gets to buy in at their preferred pricepoint.

I think MS is building up expectations of this being mega expensive so they can 'shock' everyone with a decent price at E3.

Forza on Xbone vs. Scorpio vs. PC, some details about putting a game out for both Xbones with PC used as kind of a baseline so DF can do testing.

Also the phrase "disgusting use of GPU power" is used.

Price and Support (games). Nothing else matters.

If Microsoft doesn't impress on either of those fronts at E3, or post-conference special events, the Scorpio will be a flop.
