Netflix or Shitflix

Netflix users have spent "half a billion hours" watching Adam Sandler movies on the streaming service.

Netflix revealed the milestone via its quarterly earnings reports, where the streaming giant reiterated it's excited by its recent four-film renewal deal with Sandler.

"We continue to be excited by our Sandler relationship and our members continue to be thrilled with his films," the report states. "Since the launch of The Ridiculous 6, Netflix members have spent more than half a billion hours enjoying the films of Adam Sandler."

Sandler's first two projects for Netflix, The Ridiculous 6 and The Do-Over, have become the most successful movie releases ever for the company. The Ridiculous 6 was the most-watched film during its first 30 days on Netflix, beating out licensed movies from other studios that appear on the service.

I just made the thread to be snarky. Anybody who helps bring back mst3k is okay in my book.

Err, I hadn't heard of MST3K until that other thread here, so I'm wondering what does he have to do with it?

Also I thought this was a thread where we laughed at people for watching Sandler movies.
(...I can think of a couple of his movies that I genuinely liked. But the ratio of how many he has done vs how many are non-objectively good is funny.)

I'm too cynical for this shit. If i were Netflix and I spent all this money on Sandler, I'd pump up his numbers too. What is their incentive to say otherwise?

That's the problem with streaming services, there is no real independent group that can actually gauge how well something is doing.

But then again, if you are a cable cutter with nothing but Netflix to watch, you'd probably watch the movie because it was exclusive. People used to watch the most awful shit on television when there were only 3 networks.

lol no, I meant the service of Netflix connected to mst3k. Not Sandler.

Even then it was a relatively easy deal for netflix. Most of the money was raised via Kickstarter.

As far as Sandler, I mean if I'm neing charitable, I guess everybody finds different things funny. I know a lot of people think Will Ferrell is awful for instance. And while Will does appear in a lot of shit, I think he himself is funny. I don't think I ever really got Adam Sandler. I never understood where the funny was. From the beginning of his career until now. Maybe on remote control way back in the ancient age of MTV.

Maybe but Sandler is still really popular among randoms. I was surprised at how many people told me they watched that Ridiculous six when it originally hit netflix.

I'm not saying it's the reason, but has anyone else noticed that Adam Sandler hasn't done a decent movie since 9/11?

spoiler (click to show/hide)
Punch Drunk Love came out in May 2002, but it was filmed before 9/11, so it doesn't count.

Thats the way I am seeing it for now....I am sure it's only a matter of time til the finance guys start investing more and more in the Sandler type shit with cuts to the goodwill stuff.

But until they do it, its whatever for me.

People overwhelmingly like easily digestible formulaic shit. I've come to accept it.

Thankfully it seems like companies now believe in the notion that if you want to make a name for yourself, you produce some really good shit. So when HBO takes a slide for a bit, AMC and FX showed up. Netflix comes along and wants in, so they invest in House of Cards and what not. Hulu wants in now too so they get Peggy from Mad Men to star in a dystopian story about women imprisoned and forced to fuck male elites....Or as MRA's see it: "a nice change of pace from Pornhub."

I have partially watched Sandy Wexler and this is my early review:

It feels a bit like The Wedding Singer and Punch Drunk Love. It's got the sappy heart of the Wedding Singer but the autistic star of PDL. This makes it feel a little off. The character feels like a mixture of the various shitty manager stories I've heard from the comics in this movie. A lot of it seems like a mix of shared comic stories. Colin Quinn plays a character that's history is a bit from Norm MacDonald about being on star search and losing badly.

My verdict: It's less dumb than usual.

edit: got my fat balding comics mixed up

Netflix has a reputation for being disdainful of its shareholders as well, so it's difficult to fall back on, "Well the board wouldn't be derelict in their fiduciary duties and lie like this," to assuage any skepticism.

Between the Adam Sandler movies, Marvel comic book mind dumps, and shitty stand up comedy specials, Netflix seems to really be fucking the dog lately.
