Why are you still here?

Just curious to see what different people reply, since I'm pretty new here still.
Most of you seem to have been here for 10+ years (and I assume on Gaf for long as well).

Do you hate that you can't leave? Do you always enjoy it here?
The few communities I had been in for that long have long died out, people left/disappeared and so on. I assume this place was way more active years ago, but it's still kinda active.

What keeps you coming back?

Tell me your deep secrets, and your favorite memories. I'll pretend I know what you're talking about.

It's a small community of assholes that share common interests and write entertaining posts. All opinions are (mostly) welcome and you're not going to get immediately banned for some asinine comment made in jest because *gasp* people here aren't giant man-children (mostly).

Several people from Tokyopia.com came here when that site abruptly sold its domain and became unavailable. That was a site primarily for expat devs in Japan, but there were others as well. I think it was Cormacaroni or DCharlie (XFE) who let me know this place existed.

After all these years, I like the people who post here. We have a group that seems to genuinely care about each other, though we haven't met in meatspace for the most part. I trust most of the people here, to the point where I've got a fair number of them on my Facebook as well.

There are a couple jackasses who keep things lively and prevent us from turning into a complete circle-jerk. I won't go so far as to say I enjoy dealing with them, but I do appreciate that they keep the rest of us on our toes.

FWIW, I can't stand NeoGAF – it is a manifestation of the self-important "gamer" (pronounced "Consumer") mentality. I'm always surprised when I drop into the quarantined NeoGAF thread here and find usernames that I never see in ANY OTHER THREAD here. This place must be like Methodone for them.

When I found this place I landed on the Gaf thread, so I assumed it was all like that thread and I felt too intimidated to post. Ended up asking Momo (we're old time friends from a younger internet life) which threads here were safe to hang out in. Hence my username is random as fuck.

 Turns out you're probably the most chill place I've been online for some years. Also I'm for once not the only one married/have kids, so I feel a lot less misplaced. Ya'll weird, but not too weird.

Plus GAF is full of trolls & dickwads and a lot of threads spend pages responding to a single troll post.  It's too big for its own good.  When GAF was small it was a pretty nice place for game discussion, but now it's basically reddit with moderation narrowing it to a more narrow thought-pattern.

We could even have threads that get deleted after 12 hours.  It'll be great.

Do you know Slack? It's like Slack for gaming. If not, it's like a modern IRC. You can voice chat, but most use it for chatting. It's good because it's one software running on official servers (as opposed to IRC that uses mostly custom servers, with various clients to choose from). So everyone has the same user experience UI, and it's always being improved/worked on.
