My son got to an age where he can enjoy this on the PS3. And it's really gotten me in the mood to play this again. This is very welcomed news!

The beginning all the way until the "final" boss is basically just prelude. The real shit doesn't start until post-game, which sounds strange but it's the truth. The game is best when you're dungeon crawling and fighting room after room of  difficult monsters. That stuff doesn't really start until after you've finished the story.

So yeah, definitely a weird game but very much worth it for the end-game stuff. The dungeon they added with Dark Arisen is amazing.

As I remember though, you don't have to finish the game to get to the Dark Arisen dungeon (maybe I'm misremembering?)
Though in practice it doesn't really matter because you'll get destroyed if you've not mastered the game which typically takes until you finish the main game.

Yes, you can go straight to Bitterblack Isle towards the start of the game, I think. I really wouldn't recommend that to new players at all. For first time players, the progression should be main campaign-->Everfall-->Bitterblack Isle

The content on BBI is end-game.  The multiple tiers of weapons and armor you'll get from BBI are better than sets from the vanilla game,  including the rarer stuff from Ur-Dragon and Everfall.  It is meant to be played last.

None of this is to say the campaign and main story is bad, but the game mechanics and combat aren't really pushed to their limits until Everfall and the new Dark Arisen content.
