The PS4 versions have Digital Foundry's seal of approval, 30fps and no PS4 Pro enhancements notwithstanding.

Sounds good to me! I still have the regular PS4, no Pro, so that's great to hear!

Played a couple hours on PC. Yeah, anything above 30fps is busted because of bad stuttering issue that has nothing to do with the framerate. But locked 30fps is fine. Graphically the game feels a step down from what I remember the first game looking. Lotta blurry low detail textures. Just isn't a sharp game and the lighting feels like it took a hit from the first game at least on my rig even on Ultra settings.

...but considering it is now an open world game that sorta makes sense.

....an open world game
....
....yeah I had no idea going in the game was now a sandbox game with linear sections where you go around and do missions, while exploring places and little side stories and collecting lots of loot. Kind of an interesting idea combining survival horror and sandbox gameplay. I'm looking forward to exploring this town and the spooky areas while fighting zombies. My only worry is that being a sandbox game with loot all over if you play like I play sandbox games and scrounge and explore everything kinda worried I'll end up with a ridiculous amount of ammo and health and upgrades and it won't be particularly survival and more just an action game, which is ok too.

Even if the graphics feel a little worse to me (city feels kinda PS3/X360 gen-ish; I think the effects took a hit too like when there's a mirror sparkling light I remember the effects looking really cool in the first game but looks meh here), the art direction is fucking stellar and still makes it look ace. The opening linear section (which I assume there will be linear sections for set pieces) is really great looking art-wise. Was pretty creepy too! Hoping there will be a lot of those kind of areas. While I like action, I much prefer creepy survival horror sections. Also RE7 kinda spoiled me this year by looking visually amazing and being creepy and good survival horror, so the bar is high.

So far I feel like the game doesn't have the style and panache that Mikami's first game had. Feels a little more traditional action horror game in setting.

Anyhow, enjoyed what I played a good deal and looking forward to playing more!

Some shots I took of the stellar art direction in the opening:

I'm not getting that much stuttering, sometimes it gets a little wonky when moving the camera quickly in larger open areas... drops to 47-54 fps at times but it's playable.. I was annoyed at first because it was just cutscene after cutscene but after you break into the "sandbox" it's really fun... I've spent hours just running around doing side things and getting items (playing on Nightmare so I'm stealthing around a lot too, to save on ammo) I like that there are houses you can go into that have cutscenes/stories and they never show up on your radio, keeps things interesting.

btw I don't think it's fully open world, like in Chapter 3 it opens up but I believe once you do the main mission you are done there.. not sure. But I read that some chapters are linear and some are more open, and that the open ones are in different areas, kind of like how silent hill was how you could roam around the town on your way to the next story beat, but this time w/ side quests

Cool. Yeah if it's a mix of like mini-sandbox chapters & linear set piece chapters that sounds like a good combination.

I started on Nightmare because I liked the first game's difficulty and beat that one, but I couldn't get past the first encounter in this one on Nightmare. Like the first time you fight a zombie you shoot it real quick no problem and grab ammo upstairs but then a second one is banging on the door and every time I tried to fight the door banging one I shot them like 5-6 times and they wouldn't die and kept killing me in 2 hits. Wasn't sure what I was supposed to be doing  ??? So I changed it to survival and then there's no second guy banging on the door at all, it just ends after the first zombie. Which is kinda interesting that the encounters are changed up on the higher difficulty.

Also I got the DSR to work and tried it on 15~~p and 1620p and it looked a lot sharper (though textures are still kinda not too sharp up close). But on my 980 GTX the framerate tanks at those so idk. I'll mess around with it more on the weekend and figure out the setting I want to use. I tried using a mouse and kb and now I see why people hate 30fps in fps games, trying to aim at 30fps on a controller feels normal, but trying to aim at 30fps on a kb + mouse was really difficult. If I could get 60fps I'd probably play kb+m, but since it looks like I'll be sticking to 30fps I'll stick with a gamepad.

I kicked the door open to push them back then ran back in the house and shot from there, using mouse and keyboard only need to shoot him in the head 2 or 3 times

Played a couple more hours of chapter 3 and I'm not really enjoying it. Because of the slow way I play sandbox games exploring every building and grabbing every item and doing every sidequest the progression just feels really really slow and unexciting. I'm not even at the first main quest orange marker. The first area with just level 1 zombies should not be this long and drawn out. It'd been a while so I'd forgotten the first game a ton but playing this brings back memories and I really liked the creepy wtf level design progression of the original. Was sort of dark and magical and you never knew what was going on. Chapter 3 feels kinda boring in comparison.

Gonna push through the chapter and finish exploring it out and hope the next chapter hooks me back on again because if every chapter was like this I could see myself getting bored to the point of just shelving the game :|

This morning after reading the last few pages of the gaf thread I decided to say fuck playing it slow and stealthy and instead play it like an action RE4/RE5 game since there's plenty of ammo and enemies go down quick on normal. Turned down the visuals to 1080p/60fps, switched to KB+M, started sprinting everyone instead of walking/crawling and everytime I saw zombies I'd run up to them and headshot them with pistol or shotgun instead of trying to find a way to stealth around them slowly. Covered about the same amount of ground as the 3 hours last night in about 30 mins today. Was much more fun and exciting.

So yeah, last night was trying to play it like TEW1/RE7/SH as a survival horror game and it just wasn't clicking for me, but as an RE5-style action shooter with loot and upgrades I'm enjoying it now.

Got to ch.5. I'm enjoying it and mixing up stealth/combat more since there's just too many fast/strong enemies to go full combat. Not a big fan of the location of kinda generic L4D town vs the crazy cool and creepy locals of the original. At this point the game feels like the Silent Hill Downpour of TEW, competent but a bit generic, more western and less interesting than the original in just about every way.

Does anyone know if there will be an X1X patch for this?  I'll be picking it up this week either way but if there's a patch I'll wait to play it until November.  This would be the perfect game for HDR.

FWIW, it megabombed in the UK - about 1/4th of what the first game sold on launch week.

Well, rather than fix the first game’s issues, they basically threw everything out and made a completely different game. It’s still solid but yeah I’ve seen a ton of fans of the original on gaf dislike this one and people who thought the original was bad like this one. My verdict’s still out until I finish it. I’ve heard the second half is the best here and more akin to the original.

This game has so many cutscenes and walking sim parts with crappy VA and a zzz story compared to the first. Man, every chapter further I play just makes me like this less and feel like it was a waste of $60 and my time. Almost at the 2nd half, fingers crossed it has dramatic change.

This game is super weird. I spent like 2 hours just walking around doing tedious open world scavenger crap. Yet it felt tense and very survival esque. The shooting in this game still feels like crap, but the combat feels like it wants you to plan encounters and be thoughtful. I don't know if I like it, it does feel more like a survival shooter than anything else on the market.

Whose that?

They're saying that the game retains the world design of the original while fixing its problems. But then all their screenshots are from the first level linear stage that has the great art design, so maybe they haven't gotten to the open world part yet?

That gives me a bit of a concern. I just started my 4 days off and was thinking about Red Boxing this or South Park, then kinda settled on this since it would make for a better 4 day rental. The open-world aspect already had me worried because I like the linearity of the first game.

That doesn't sound enjoyable but I slog through The Division every once in a while getting the random collectibles just because so eh, I might be down with the open world scavenger crap.

Now THAT I can definitely get down with.

It's not open world like say GTA. If anything it just takes elements of an open world game and adapts them for a survival horror game. You have small open environments that you do kind of feel like exploring for either extra resources or sometimes extra tools. Doing this doesn't exactly feel tedious like in actual open world games because sometimes getting to this stuff is well fought.

But the feel of well crafted and thought out linear levels is somewhat gone.

Nothing before chapter 11 has felt like a master class in single player level design that you'd probably want from a game like this.

Hmmm, did a good chunk of ch.7 (just have the mainframe sidequest left) and enjoyed ch.7 a lot more than ch.3. I think the smaller hub made it pace a lot quicker and also having more skills at this point made getting around more fun. Ch.3 is just so big that if you creep around exploring everywhere it can take like 5+ hours just for that chapter which I'm told is about 1/3rd the total game length. I get what they were going for with easing players into the stealth sandbox gameplay with a big open area at the start, but eh, it wasn't for me. Didn't help that I didn't like the chapters right after it either. But enjoying ch.7. Even on survival I'm always running low on ammo, can't really go in guns blazing as there just isn't enough ammo, so bought the smoke lvl.3 upgrade and focusing on stealth kills to conserve ammo.

Got to ch.11, enjoying everything ch.7 onwards more than the ch. 1-6 stuff. But these flame guys are pretty lamo to fight against. Game keeps feeling like it's built for stealth and if you don't want to play janky stealth you're always getting punished. Oh well, about to buy the 12,000 cost predator skill and that should help further so you don't have to use bottle lures and hope the AI goes where you want.

Rented it from Red Box and finished it in two days. Took me 18 hours. I really enjoyed it! Make sure you explore everything in the open world part of Chapter 3 because you don’t get to go back to that area at all afterwards.

Competent openworld game (more like hubs though), but a let down from the first one in almost every aspect. It's more consistent and the plot makes way more sense, but I rather have a messy game with better combat and art design that just ends up being more interesting even when it's fucking up.

That's probably where I'm going to end up on the game. Haven't finished it, but feels like it's going to be a competent 8/10 survival horror to add to the list, which is fine since it's not like it's big genre, but there's almost nothing interesting about TEW2 at all that makes it stick out. Now the first game was a mess and probably a worse game overall, but at least it had interesting stuff that made it worth the experience like the plot, the combat and the incredible art design and atmosphere. This game feels like it doesn't really know what it wants to be and just tries to take bits of other games (including its predecessor) and blend them together. Feels kinda like a sequel made to make a sequel and not because anybody actually wanted to make/do anything with this game.

I'd still recommend TEW2 to survival horror fans, but yeah it's a rental/$20 kinda game. I find Union and the post-Union story really generic so far.

The story in this is LEAGUES better than the first but the gunplay doesn’t feel quite right because the enemies are quicker. Definitely upgrade your aiming.

To be honest I just stuck with the first pistol you get the whole game. You get a laser sighted pistol but it zooms in way too far and enemies get too close to you too quickly to be able to manage to shoot them on a controller. Upgrade critical hit % too on the pistol because it’s just as OP in this one as it is the first.

Level 3 smoke bolts let you stealth kill anyone in the radius of the smoke so it’s pretty cheese too. I mostly stealth killed everyone because I disliked the shooting to be honest. I didn’t get that awesome last expensive skill though, is that the third one in the bottom right of the stealth tree?

Yeah, I totally disagree and think you're crazy.

The actual sneaking around, fighting zombies is fun in this game. It's the only thing that redeems it from the garbage amount of cutscenes/walking dialogue sections in the game for a trash story. Game thinks it's Metal Gear or something with all these cutscenes but the story is as generic call of duty shit as it gets and is a snore-fest. Why do I care about any of these characters? Why do I care about Sebastian (whose a fucking moron) and his guilt the whole game? Why do I care about these terrible paper-thin villains? The story is junk which would be fine if this was a gameplay game and it just gave you bosses to fight and an intro and ending, but it's like the game thinks it's high art and we really need to stop and sit down and watch these awful cutscenes with some of the worst voice acting ever. I was really tempted to just skip all the cutscenes by the 2nd half but I wanted to have some idea of what was going on.

I'd go as far as saying this is the most boring story I've seen in a horror videogame. Even shit like Clock Tower 3 was more entertaining. This is like Dead Space 3-tier garbage.

On the other hand, the original TEW is one of the few horror videogames like Siren/Silent Hill 1/Fatal Frame 2/Rule of Rose, that actually has a decent story. It's no Silent Hill 2, but it's pretty original, creepy and well layered. TEW1 does a good job of keeping you guessing and in the dark and giving you the pieces to fill in exactly what happened. When it's all explained its a neat psychological horror-sci-fi mashup that would make a cool film.

TEW2 on the other hand is literally here's some evil psychos and a town of zombies and evil umbrella corp behind it all. zzzzz, it's as derivative as it gets.

Derivitave, yeah. It felt like a mix between Silent Hill 2 and Resident Evil, except with Umbrella being Mobius and there being things going on behind the scenes with Mobius that are explained fairly well. I liked seeing how Mobius didn’t take into account how people on the outside being put into STEM go crazy realizing that they can start a new life and carry out their deepest, darkest desires they couldn’t get away with in the real world. It almost felt like the first Resident Evil movie where everything gets screwed up so they send in mercenaries to try to fix things, then you find out more about what’s going on. It felt more like a Resident Evil game than 7 to me, just with horrible shooting and a half-assed stealth system until you get everything upgraded.

Now that people have actually had the time to go through the whole thing and comprehend the story, what's the consensus on whether or not you need to play the first TEW?

Chapter 14 has a major throwback to TEW1 but that’s about it. You won’t really know who Kidman is either.

You don't need to play the first one. It's a cool game but very frustrating with a lot of shitty parts that you gotta force yourself through.

If you're never going to play the first one, just watch these vids to get the story:

Huh, well thanks to the both of you. I'll bookmark the videos since I don't think I could slog through the first game.

Not hurting for games atm, but since Black Friday is right around the corner I imagine I could pick up TEW2 for a nice deal and throw it on the backlog pile.

I haven't played it yet. 😫

Between my new phone and headphones I'm slightly too poor to afford a new PS4 and $60 game. :goty2

Possibly next month though, since I have a new job!

So I finished this up this morning. Last few chapters were probably the best even if there wasn't much gameplay. Final boss was pretty solid fight.

Game was ok, I feel like for everything it does right it does something wrong. If the original game was a bunch of 9/10 sections with a few too many 1/10 sections, TEW2 is a bunch of 7/10 sections with a few 8/10 sections and a few 5/10 sections.

The stealth is good, but it's overpowered as hell along with the bolt gun thunderbolts/smoke. Meanwhile the guns and gunplay is pretty bad. Enemies are bullet sponges especially in the 2nd and 3rd section of the game. Since ammo is scarce, aiming sucks and I have to use a ton of it for one grunt zombie in the 3rd act whereas I can just 1 hit kill them with stealth...yeah there's no point in doing anything other than stealth. You can even run away if spotted and they'll lose track of you and you can try again.

So the stealth works and is fun, but it's also slow and for a RE4-ish action-y game like TEW2 you want to be able to fight but it's just really against you when you do. Then you have all the sections/bosses/mini-bosses where you are forced into combat and because the gunplay isn't great and the aiming is bad (playing on PC with a controller, every time I had to shoot I'd switch over to kb+m because aiming was awful on controller [still bad on PC too]), the combat sections aren't particularly good/satisfying. They're ok at best.

The thing is that replay it on NG+, the 2nd episode of the game (which is still intro before combat) is the only "scary/horror" section of the game. Like that part feels like the original and has tension and oddly art direction (with the hanging bodies and stuff) that once you leave it you never really see again for the rest of the game. The atmosphere of the rest of the game is closer to Dead Space 3/RE5/6 or something where it's just kinda action zombie/monster game. But where everything kinda sucks outside stealth. On NG+ you get letterbox view like the first game and turning it on for my NG+ run I think it helps the art direction/atmosphere somewhat although I still feel that is a big step down from the first game. Music too, there's hardly any music after the intro outside one nice stage before the final boss. The original's soundtrack by Grasshopper's Masafumi Takada was good. This time it's someone else and is very minimal.

Talking about the original, TEW2 surprisingly has a bunch of gameplay/subplot sections devoted to "remember TEW1?" which eventually go nowhere and feel kind of out place and more like easter eggs for TEW1 players. Didn't really feel that fit with the game and would rather they didn't exist and TEW2 focused more on standing on its own. TEW2 feels like a game that kinda knows what its trying to do but lacks the confidence and is done weakly if that make sense.

Finally the story, the story handling in this game is weird. It tries to be a SUPER SUPER SERIOUS DRAMA STORY, but all of the real story is saved for Act 2 & 3 which are about 3-5 hours each and Act 1 is ~8-10 hours and half the game. So there's like no story for half the game and then nothing but non-stop SERIOUS DRAMA PLOT in the 2nd half. The story might have been ok, but the voice acting (holy shit), facial animation and cutscene direction are really bad videogame cutscene quality. Like some of the RE stuff, which just doesn't work at all with the serious family drama story they are trying to tell. I really wish I could have taken it seriously and appreciated the story but everytime the main guy talks in his Solid Snake impression I kinda rolled my eyes. And the problem is that if the story isn't working for you there is so many cutscenes and walk&talk sections that slows down the pacing. Game is pretty long at 15-20 hours.

It's not bad and I enjoyed it at times stealthing around and occasional boss fights, but to me it really comes across as trying to appease mainstream mass audience and getting rid of most of what made the original unique in the process (like why the hell is letterbox view a NG+ unlockable? Probably because mainstream reviews complained about the original being letterboxed -_-). That said pretty sure we're not getting a 3rd game and I'm fine with that. Hopefully next Tango game is Mikami directed.

Also story-wise:

For all the throwback stuff to the original in this, I'm really surprised they never did anything with Ruvik in TEW2. I mean they kinda left him off wandering in the real world at the end of TEW1 and I thought they'd work him into a sequel, especially with the whole taking down Mobius angle.

Also the final Kidman gunplay stuff just showed how bad the aiming was. It took me forever to shoot the damn agents with the revolver even on kb+m. The crosshair kept swaying and everytime the agents pop out to shoot it would force you back into cover. Really weak gunplay in this game imo. Shotgun was the only decent feeling weapon imo.

I completely agree with your first point. The end of the first game showed him leaving in the crowd during everything going on leading you to believe something would happen in this one with the SPOILER. Also I agree with the last chapter's gunplay section. It took me a while to actually shoot people with a controller. I'm glad you had unlimited bullets at least. That was still a fantastic moment though.

Honestly though, the first game had B-movie grade voice acting and this one did too so I was okay with it. I just took it as part of the charm. I really should've used the bolt gun more (I even upgraded the smoke bolts to level 3 to get stealth kills on enemies within the smoke but still didn't use it) and just shot mostly everyone with the first pistol or the long-barrel shotgun. Did you try adjusting the camera and aiming sensitivity at all when you were using the controller? By the time I got past my irritation with Chapter 3 being open-world and different than the first game, I got into the groove of running away from enemies to headshot them with that sweet, OP critical % chance. Chapter 14 is ALL "HEY REMEMBER THE EVIL WITHIN 1?! DID YOU PLAY?! IT WAS COOL RIGHT! WELL HAVE FUN!" I dunno, I just really enjoyed the game.

So I'm watching the Super Best Friends LP of this : I know it's a running gag they (specifically Patrick) suck at puzzles and can only brute force them but I got quite frustrated with the part I watch...

spoiler (click to show/hide)
Auto repair shop basement in the first act, they find a grid for codes nearby the first door with a number panel and it seemed fairly obvious that the big sign painted in massive capitals on said door was the references to use with the cipher.

...since the solution seemed obvious but Patrick went "DON'T UNDERSTAND THIS SHIT, FUCK IT I'LL BACKTRACK TO THE OTHER SIDE OF THE MAP".

They broke sequence (softly) early on and as a result exposed some wonky checkpointing. Maybe a freak accident but it seems infuriating for a game with open maps.

Does this game have different art directors?

Everything feels really sterile compared to the first game as if the finishing touches weren't put in many areas.

The Evil Within 2 deserves more attention. The first game's mixed reception(I thought it was pretty mediocre, myself) really hampered it's sales, not to mention just how many good games came out in October.

I got interested in it watching the Super Best Friends LP and decided to pick it up since I'm waiting on my Switch to get here, I'm actually blown away by how much it improves on the original(in like every conceivable way, can't get into it without spoiling the game). I'd say it's like if Silent Hill was made by RE devs with a sprinkling of the very first Dead Rising but that would be selling it short, Evil Within actually has an identity now. It's not just a messy mish mash of RE4, Last of Us and what have you but not as good. The team found their footing and were able to make it stand out as it's own monster.

I found myself pleasantly surprised with every new development. Be it story or gameplay wise. There's so much visual flair here that the first game was sorely lacking. The bosses were creative and fun, the scenarios were well paces, the small hubs for certain chapters were fun to traverse and explore. Special shout outs to the side missions for actually being substantial, I never regretted doing one so I kept doing them, and it always was worth doing. Also those mini-games are addictive as fuuuuu-

I highly recommend this to all my good buddies who like Survival Horror games, especially those who were as disappointed with the first game as I was. All my complaints were addressed here. The game has a few flaws but I struggle to think of any unless I want to nitpick. It keeps the highs going and it goes really high at points. I liked RE7, but RE7 was like a tech demo with how much they tried to pad it out with barely enough enemy designs(the last third was trash, too). TEW2 is the best survival horror game I've played in years, and I hope it didn't disappoint too much sales wise so that we can see this team continue to make more games. TEW3 or even another new IP, I'm down for either.

What

Say what you will about the first game's quality, but the art direction was incredible in the original. This game does not hold a candle visually.
But yeah, seems like people who thought the original was mediocre like this one.
People who liked the original, think this one is mediocre.

The original game had character and style (and yes, it had flaws), this game is dumbed down, bland and spoon fed for the mainstream audience. RE7 shits over TEW2 from great heights with FAR better combat, better art/graphics/sound, and better story/atmosphere. There's so many better survival horror games than TEW2, but it's passable I guess.
