Nothing wrong with card games. The problem is complexity (see: Magic: Duels) + Code for said complexity, versus brain-dead-simple-so-no-fun (see: Hearthstone and numerous clones of it) to where you can't get strategy from it.
Or they do the CCG model (see: Hex) to where they want to price-gouge you to compete.
Like: Gwent in the Witcher 3 is alright. But Gwent as an actual player-vs-player game? Sucks, because you have pay-for folks or "meta" decks that can't be balanced quick enough and when they do, they nerf it instead of looking at the actual problematic issues (factions, etc.) to fix those.
