Is it any more dangerous than looking at the sun normally? It's the same amount of rays or whatever right?

Florida Judge Steven Merryday rejected a request to postpone a trial so a Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives agent could view Monday's solar eclipse.

Merryday, who presides in the Middle District of Florida, denied the motion, noting that the eclipse would last "no more than two minutes and forty-two seconds" while the trial has involved many people's time and effort.

"Definitely recurrent, sometimes consequential, and occasionally spectacular, the solar eclipse understandably occupies a provocative place in history and in art," Merryday wrote. Referring to the song "You're so Vain," he continued, "In a popular 1970s song, the splendid Carly Simon introduced the attendance of a former suitor [reportedly the actor Warren Beatty] at a solar eclipse as probative evidence of his putatively insufferable vanity."
Quote
The judge also scorned the assistant U.S. attorney who made the motion "where no AUSA has moved before"— a Star Trek allusion — for using the phrase "schedule to occur" about the eclipse, "as if someone arbitrarily set the eclipse, as an impresario sets a performer, to appear at a chosen time and place, subject always to some unstated exigency."

"Cruel fate has dictated that the August 21 eclipse will occur during the trial of an action in which the agent is a principal participant on behalf of the United States," Merryday wrote. "When an indispensable participant, knowing that a trial is imminent, pre-pays for some personal indulgence, that participant, in effect, lays a bet. This time, unlike Carly Simon's former suitor, whose "horse, naturally, won," this bettor's horse has—naturally—lost."
Quote
It’s not the first time Merryday has gotten an unusual request for a court delay. In 2012, a lawyer involved in a murder-for-hire trial asked for a delay so he could participate in an annual Ernest Hemingway look-alike contest.

no but you aren't supposed to stare at the sun normally either

Vereor nox brehs.

The problem with eclipses is that since 99% of the light is blocked it's a lot easier to stare at the sun for a while. Enough to fuck your eyes up.

With the eclipse, you don't get the glaring light that tells your brain "Hey, stop looking at this thing, you dingus" but you still get all the UV rays blasted directly into your retinas.

The peak passed at 10:19AM here in CA. It wasn't even 1/2 full.
Used some welder's glass that someone out of the warehouse brought out. Literally couldn't see shit with them on they were so dark but w/e.

Don't go blind.

I don't even know if it's peaked here or not. It's supposed to be passing through the state up north right now, but at the same time we're only getting like 75-90% coverage so it's like... not even dark outside to hint the Eclipse is happening. :lol

Lunar eclipses are cooler anyway.

It's only about 80% coverage here, so even at its peak the sun's still way to bright to really tell that anything's going on.

Watching the eclipse today changed my life.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
As the penultimate moment arrived, I reached into my pocket for my phone so I could take a picture. As I was fumbling around I felt the presence of a worn piece of paper. Curious, I grabbed it instead.

As I eagerly unfolded this piece of paper, it turned out to be a revelation of my future. A beacon of hope for which I did not know existed until that very moment. It forced upon me a decision. A decision which would change my life forever.

That worn, unassuming piece of paper was actually a coupon. A coupon for a FREE beefy potato-rito at my local Taco Bell. Friends, I don't think my words can adequetely describe the delight that this small pocket of goodness gave me. So, I will let our fine friends at YUM! brands do it instead.

Quote
This new $1* blockbuster is filled with those seasoned, crispy potato bites we all love. And let us not forget the great supporting roles of the melted, real cheddar cheese, creamy chipotle sauce and nacho cheese sauce. It’s obvious that it’s the combined powers of all these ingredients that makes this burrito truly amazing.

So, while mine was free. I would have gladly paid 3-4 dollars for it. But you can alter the direction of your life for only 1 dollar! (for a limited time)

The totality here in Nashville for a few minutes were very cool.

The birds in Centennial Park were confused as fuck. "Welp, I guess it is time for bed"

I got 2:30 seconds of totality, very few clouds too. The edges of the horizon looked like dusk (but with bright white clouds, was pretty trippy) and night up above. Living in this backwater shithole town finally paid off.

I'm so jealous of people who got to watch this in its full glory IRL! Creepy and beautiful. What's better than that?

Watched the 90% eclipse back in 2003, but honestly can't remember much. Anyway I'm enjoying all the videos and photos, especially the ones posted above of Trump frying his retinas. 8)

We had about 90+% totality in Atlanta. It got all twilight-y, outside lights came on, birds shut up, etc. Sadly the sun came back out, but one day I will figure out how to permanently defeat my oldest enemy.

I missed it.

Kept hoping that people would stop calling in long enough for me to go take a peak, and all the ATL people pretty much did...but that didn't stop the rest of 'em.  :'(  One lady called in and went "DIDJA SEE THE ECLIPSE?!?!?!?!?  Oh...?  OH.  Well, thank you for working....?"
