I got my copy today.

I liked Knack 1. Will defend it to this day. It was a fun B platformer that played like an old-school arcade game with the couple hits your dead challenge. The story/character stuff was not good, but otherwise it was a fun launch title. Enough of a good impression that I'll play Knack 2. Hopefully it's still challenging and they didn't dumb it down for wider appeal.

Knack 1's demo was one of the most boring things I've ever played. I'd rather play Sonic.

Played a bit on hard, died 3 times on a fight in the first 10 mins. Had to learn the patterns and dodge & counter efficiently. Was happy. Game seems like 10x the budget of the original. Reminds me of the Platinum Transformers game.

I realize Knack isn't for most people, but when I played Knack 1 I felt like me & Cerny probably like similar type of game design. I don't feel you can compare Knack to Mario or Sonic or Crash, the combat is simple in those games and it's about the platforming. Knack plays like an 16-bit retro stripped down Devil May Cry/NG in its combat mixed with a Ratchet & Clank style easy but fun platforming. I'm skipping every cutscene right from the start in Knack 2 though.

Those cartoon beat em ups wouldn't kill you over and over again and you could mash buttons blindly. Try doing that in Knack 1 and you'll get nowhere. The game more than most action platformers required you to learn patterns and dodge them. You'd start out fighting a guy with a laser and have to learn to see when he fires and the timing to dodge the laser shot, then you'd fight a guy who does a dash stab that you need to dodge time to get out of the way, then you'd fight both at the same time and have to learn to work around both attacks at the same time, then they'd introduce a third enemy type and mix up all 3 together, etc... it was pretty clever if you like that kind of stuff. The actual attacking was simple punch punch, because the game design was built around strategic defense through the dodge mechanic, the 3 hits kills you with checkpoints far apart and attacking wasn't the important part.

Now that's all Knack 1. I know Knack 2 fleshes out the attacking combat much more with a bunch more moves and abilities, but as long as it's still got the defense timings in, it should be good.

I get most people don't like Knack 1 and it gets trolled all the time, but I thought it was a good, not great, launch title. Moreso than the PS3 stuff like Folklore (although I would've been down for a 10x budget fleshed out sequel of that too). It's way better than Genji was. The combat in that sucked.

It's like if you turned on The Daily Show and it was some foreign black dude doing jokes about politics instead of Craig Kilborn killing it with his famous Five Questions segment.

Fair. I don't even know if/when I'll actually play Knack 2. Tried out the first area but then put it in the backlog as I'd rather play other stuff. But someday I'd like to get to it!

First Knack was a shit game; not even a great tech demo.

I bought it launch day knowing what I was getting into and I was still disappointed.

i don't understand how knack's character design got approval. he looks like one of those mid-90s tech demos that's trying to show off as many polygons at once as possible.

Part of me feels like Sony should just fall back on this strategy like they did for the PS2. 4K and HDR people are all like what i already got a TV...and GFLOPS was too complicated for people and Microsoft crushed it instantly. But those polygon numbers in the old days you could just make up whatever shit you wanted and nobody could really confirm/deny in a way that the mass market would hear.

"Knack 2 can use over TEN TRILLION POLYGONS, something which can only be done on the PS4!"

spoiler (click to show/hide)
Then we have to go dig that Lazy8s guy up to make a bunch of posts using blurry Gamespot jpegs to prove the Dreamcast can actually do BETTER polygons than the PS4. :doge

can't forget this masterpiece

this was always mildly interesting to me at the time as an easy example of the palette size differences between the SNES and Genesis (but was never in any of those ads Nintendo made showing the difference) as like half the fighters almost fade into the background on the Genesis, especially on a TV rather than monitor

edit: although looking at it now, it may actually be because the SNES is using mode 7 to make a textured floor whereas Genesis is stuck with a solid color or gradient, so take that younger me you just got schooled
