Apple Event Thread (9/12/17)
« on: September 12, 2017, 11:11:15 AM »
https://www.theverge.com/2017/9/12/16268126/apple-event-live-stream-time-new-iphone-x-8-schedule

Safari on macOS or Edge on Windows 10 required for the livestream (yes this is still true, in the Year of Our Lord 2017.)

I'm actually pretty interested in seeing what they do with the new Nine-Hundred and Ninety U.S. Dollars iPhone X. The camera improvements are probably nuts.

I can't tell if this I like the wider cutout at the top like this concept, or the small dot like on the Essential Phone. They're both pretty cool and exciting in any case.

Non-square screens and screens with cutouts. :rejoice

"Fingerprint sensor? What's that?" :idont

Going to need to see a lot of improvements in Siri for the HomePod to make more sense than an Amazon Echo or Google Home.

Apple TV "but for real this time guys," Mk. 5.

I don't get the wailing at the price. Everyone happily paid between $749-$899 for the iPhone in their pocket right now.

Looking forward to  Apple TV 4K

Yeah, or they got it subsidized by carriers anyways.

If the improvements justify the price, it's fine IMO. I'm most interested in seeing what they can do with camera tech in a brand new $1000 phone.

Having used a 6S+ for almost 2 years now, I can't go back to a smaller phone. If the X is the small size then it isn't for me.

Size is supposed to be slightly larger than the normal iPhone, but with the screen size of a Plus. I think.

I feel kind of weird for saying this, but I think no Touch ID means I'm not on board. Facial recognition shit just isn't as flexible.

Nobody said anything when they skipped 2.

I mean the Ten is technically iPhone 11 but whatever, it's more the fact they have two new products: one called 8 and one called "Ten." :lol

It's mandatory for Apple Pay but I doubt it is for phone unlock.

But maybe I'm wrong – that's how Touch ID was anyway.

I hate getting into pissing matches about who-did-what-first because it never really matters, but if we're focusing on the Android side of things, Android 4.0 in 2011 had Face Unlock, and although a couple phones had it earlier I think the first major phone with Qi wireless charging and a glass back was the Nexus 4 in 2012. :P

That said, all that was a long time ago and I'm sure the tech has progressed (the infrared stuff in the X is far above simple camera-based recognition), but figured it should be said.

It's the screen I've wanted for the last like 5 years.  I was really tempted to get an S8 but I don't like Samsung's shell on top of Android and I want a phone that behaves with my Apple Watch.

It's funny, try calling OSX "Oh Ess Ecks" at a Mac Fanboi gathering. You'll get a chorus of "It's Oh Ess TEN!" in a squeaky high register, with some voices shrilly cracking.

Yeah, oddly when I grab my old iPhone 5S, I prefer its more manageable size to my 6.

Still see no reason to burden myself with the kind of negativity that iOS brings into one's life, other than the fact that Android STILL doesn't have the Hater dating app. Will wait for the Pixel XL 2 announcement next month and then in all likelihood just score a cheap OG Pixel XL.

If you're jumping between mobile OS's a lot, you should probably go with devices and services that work with both (*cough Android Wear/Fit/everything Google*)

I'm seriously more likely to wait for a smaller phone. I don't need a mini-tablet.

Does the SE get regular, minimal spec changes to stay current, or is it a dead-end vein despite its lack of number?

Not sure on that, so far this is the only one they've put out (17 months ago) but I hope it stays updated. I only just switched back to ios from android recently but I was actually glad to go back to a smaller phone from the 5.7" one I was using before.

Its resale value in Japan is in-fucking-sane. Even the 16GB version is over 200 bucks, and the Actually Feasible Amount of Memory models are in the 500-600 bucks range.

The X looks rushed really. My bet is in a year or two, the selfie camera and the fingerprint sensor will find their way under the screen (apparently that tech exists but isn't at mass production stage yet).

I'd recommend the iPhone upgrade program or just get a Pixel XL2. Have you ever used an Android phone daily?

The amount of hidden gestures needed to move around the OS (swipe "halfway" up for multitasking… what??) feels too “mystery meat” for me.

Like I get they don't want to seem like they're copying Android and doing a software home button, but... yeah I dunno. I'm sure people will get used to it but these things having no/very little on-screen UI could be a nightmare for normies.

Chrono might be tickled by this:

iOS 10 already had the rather flimsy iCloud Drive for getting at your files, but the Files app in iOS 11 is much better—it lets you browse through files stored in iCloud, on the local device, and even in third-party services like Dropbox, all through one simple interface. It almost feels like a real computer!

I've been using iOS 11 since June and it's been awesome especially on my iPad Air 2. Had a few battery issues with it on my 7 plus though, but that has all but worked out. Official 11 is amazing for lots of little reasons, but the biggest for me has been files. That program is freaking magic like.

I haven't decided on if I'm getting a 8 or X, but i'm leaning with sticking with the 7 plus. The 8 plus does have quick charge, but they aren't including anything for it. Nor are they giving the 8 plus the dual image stabilization of the X. That series 3 watch on the other hand is mine! Somedays I just want to be as light as possible and if I can still use my AirPods for calls on that it's as good as bought.

Also job well done with getting 6 of the 7 major film distributors to agree to prices on 4k content and giving free upgrades to those that have already purchased into the iTunes library. That is a huge thing for 4k content that should be news in itself but people don't give a shit about 4k or UHDs for that matter.

Well two things I wasn't expecting this week. Apple TV 4k sucks balls apparently with HDR content and no auto switching for HDR10 to Dolby Vision. iPhone 8+ apparently is a good upgrade from a 7+ just for the camera/video. I'm ain't gonna lie the pictures and video coming out of the early reviews are looking so much better than the 7+ and Note 8. Apparently 600mhz varieties are coming early 2018 for those on T-mobile, free swaps if you are in one of those markets.

Apple’s Latest Products Get Rare Mixed-Bag Reviews

Quote
Despite the strength of its brand, Apple Inc. occasionally releases a product to mediocre reviews – remember the original Apple TV or Apple Watch? But reviewers have rarely been as grumpy as this month, when Apple unveiled its collection of new gadgets for the holidays.

Each product was docked by reviewers for specific functional flaws, ranging from the iPhone 8’s middling design to Apple Watch Series 3 issues with wireless connectivity, and quality problems with the Apple TV 4K's video output.

Tough crowd.
