I'll be honest, don't think Resetera will last as long as some of y'all think.

In a few weeks a lot of the 3000 people posting will just give up. It won't be exciting anymore, it doesn't have exactly everything they would want, and they'll move on. I hope it's a success for the people involved but I'll give it a few weeks before I say so.

Either way even if it continues to exist with half the member that's a major blow to GAF (the hits keep on coming) which will never be like it was before this mess anyway. So that's cool.

The design is still godawful. Looks like a web 2.0 version of an early aughts free forum toolkit.

People on gaf regularly relegated themselves into communities that had 10 active users at best. I think the new forum smell will lasted, especially since they aren't going back to gaf.

How did forums like this get started? Probably similar numbers to start no?

You know what? I was thinking the exact same thing. I have spent FAR too much of my life posting and lurking on message boards. And the collapse of GAF (well, the collapse of OT GAF) felt like it could do me some good. I'm definitely not as into video games as I once was. I spend far more of my time talking about college football and tennis (and these days, I play as much tennis as the day will allow me). But staying over at GAF feels weird considering 1) that I know jack shit about video games these days, and 2) the revelations of EviLore and Amir0x.

But you're right: it could definitely be a blessing in disguise.

I gotta say though. They're kinda pathetic in that they had a chance to reset GAF and decided to just copy gafs entire motif in gaming, gaming community, off topic, off topic community. It's wack and that set up been old hat for years. If they were smart, once they get enough users, they'd make a sports forum, a politics forum, a gaming troll forum for people to get that out of their system and ban anyone who makes trolls or system warz in the main gaming forum. But they won't. Because they're gaffers and gaffers never learn.

From several pages ago, but I have to disagree. Sure, initially I thought that gaf might have benefited from having subforums when it got really big, but consolidating all non-gaming discussion to one subforum seemed to actually be a better move, imo. It's also smart in that, by making sure everything aggregates in one forum, it provides the impression that there's way more activity than there probably would have been otherwise with multiple subforums.

Resetera looks like it's going to serve it's purpose just fine and be exactly what the users want, so I'm not really sure it's a failure other than they'll have to figure out some scaling and load balancing concerns. If people end up eating themselves it's not like that wasn't already happening on gaf and that never came to a proper head. The only reason gaf imploded was because of the expose made on Evilore's sexual harassment. Obviously a place with hands on moderation is going to have it's own drama.

At this point I'm not sure I'm really seeing anything that I haven't seen before, people are back to their bubbles and the same old communication woes.

Yeah, that's what I'm seeing too. Hopefully it will work out for the folks at the new forum. I've been visiting gaf for about 9 years now. Now I'll just visit a couple more forums that didn't exist until this week or I didn't know existed until this week. After all of this, I've got more choices.

The weirdest thing is that the victim who came forward has been pretty much erased. The new forum won't discuss it, and the old forum is now obsessed with the "response" rather than any thing else. Predictable I guess!
