Do any of you guys want to play Diplomacy? (for Android users)
« on: September 22, 2017, 10:00:29 PM »
I've been playing Diplomacy on this android App called Conspiracy for about a month now.  Are 6 of you interested in starting up a game?

EDIT
The Android app Conspiracy seems to be the best way to play this, so that will be my first attempt to get a game going.

People signed up for Conspiracy:
1. Trurl
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
7.

I also want to make a list of people who are interested but don't have Android. The people on this list can start a separate game using something else, or in the likely event that the first list doesn't get 7 people, we can discuss playing this on something like Backstabbr.

Non-Android People:

Was I wrong in assuming that everyone is familiar with Diplomacy?

Sorry.  Unfortunately I have neither the skill nor the ambition to make a GAF style OP.

That said, Diplomacy is a boardgame that might at first be mistaken for Risk. The game takes place on a 1901 map of Europe and players control one of seven empires trying to become the greatest empire in Europe.

Unlike Risk, Diplomacy uses no dice and orders are given secretly and all seven powers reveal and resolve their orders simultaneously.   Furthermore, every territory can only have one military unit in it and all military units are equally powerful.  The natural state of this combat is gridlock, but there is a way out.  Military units in neighboring territories can "support" each other and combine their power.

This combat system is very simple but it sets the stage for the real heart of the game: intrigue.  To win you will have to find some allies, all of whom may be lying to you and plotting behind your back.  This game is evil, known for destroying friendships and enjoyed by such assholes as Henry Kissenger.

Yeah, it's really regrettable.  It's also the best platform for playing Diplomacy today as far as I can tell.

One more thing, the game can be very slow.  I would probably set the timer for one turn a day or maybe even two days.  This leaves plenty of time for negotiation and also creates a pacing unlike anything else I've played.

I'm familiar with Diplomacy, its rules (though don't ask me to resolve a set of conflicting orders right now) and some of the history of the game but I never played it. Was somewhat curious to try but I always hesitated because of the potential time investment.

For those interested, this site has some nifty materials and all the different rules including the Avalon Hill booklet for the 2000 edition :
http://www.diplomacy-archive.com/home.htm

In short, Diplomacy is a game played on a map of Europe divided into provinces by 7 players, each representing one of the great powers of Europe in the nascent 20th century (UK, FR, GER, AUS, RUS, ITA, TUR). Each player start, IIRC, with one naval unit and a land army. A number of "supply centers" (30 ors so) are disposed on the map and the goal of the game is to try and control over half of them (or the most, if total victory is impossible). The number of supply centers you control translates 1-1 to the number of units you can field (you can only build a new fleet if you take control of a port, etc...).

Each round, each player writes down the marching orders for its units, all orders are opened for everyone to see once its done and units are moved accordingly. No two units can occupy the same space, units can only move to an adjacent province and units are not destroyed in battles (they're only dislodged or blocked from a province depending on the rules to resolute all simultaneous orders).

What sets the game apart is that in between each order phases, players are entirely free to discuss with each other, either at the table or privately in order to strike deals, alliances or to convince someone that you're not moving your army on the Bosphorus straits. None of which is formalized into the game proper so you're equally free to openly lie or to suddenly turn on your ally (one of the legendary anecdotes has been about players bribing the post man to intercept and tamper the diplomatic letters of a fellow player...)

The mechanics are not too unwieldy. Some of the order resolution is a bit arcane though it's not too complicated (There's only 4 orders you can give : Hold, Move, Support, Convoy and the latter one is only for fleets transporting a land unit) but it's a fairly light game as a player can at most control 16 units. All the meat and potato is the diplomatic phase and there's no rules (except the agreement on how long it lasts) or chits needed for that. This means the game is very versatile and can be played on a board, by mail or a computer.

The cross-compatible option is to use something browser based.  There's http://www.backstabbr.com

The only problem is that it's a little less convenient and ugly as sin.  But if we can get a game going it would be cool.

The first example I want to refer to is the forged orders sent in by Duncan Morris in 1974DG, discussed in Richard Sharp's The Game of Diplomacy at page 124. To cut a long story short, Dennis Love (playing Russia) sent Duncan (playing Turkey) a letter exhorting him to joint action against Austria, the first page of which was general chat, but which ended with the words "I think we should proceed as follows:" On the second page Denis wrote out his proposed orders, leaving the orders for his northern pieces blank (as none of Turkey's business) and left a space for Duncan to write in the orders for the Turkish units.. Unfortunately for Dennis he signed this page and wrote that "these orders replace any previous orders sent for the relevant Russian and Turkish units." Duncan therefore wrote in orders for Russia's northern units to attack Russia's ally Germany and sent the orders in to Richard Sharp, the GM!  Now, Dennis may have been foolish to leave himself so exposed, but without question the orders for the northern Russia units were forged - they did not come from Dennis.  When Richard received this document he admits that he "was puzzled, but one thing was clear: this was a perfectly valid set of Russo-Turkish joint orders, duly signed" which superseded the existing Russian orders.

Quote
This issue was thrown into relief with two forgeries that occurred a couple of years later in Fall of Eagles game FOE21. Bruce Foster (Austria) and Sam Moore (Turkey) were personal friends and Bruce contrived to obtain Sam's signature at the bottom of a blank piece of paper. Sam thought he was signing a birthday card, but this was all a ruse dreamt up by Bruce. However Bruce was not content to merely post the sheet (which now had a full set of  Turkish orders added) in case Sam sent a later set or orders in. So, to be absolutely sure he decided to drive up from South Wales to Nottingham on the day of the deadline and give Richard the orders at the last possible moment. After an eventful journey (which included having his car written off and a spell in casualty) he successfully delivered the orders, which appeared to be valid, bearing Turkey's signature. At every stage Bruce had told Richard what was going on and there was no question of the GM having been deceived. Richard accepted the orders with devastating results for Turkey.

Imagine you are about to double-cross an erstwhile ally, but wish to remain in his good books for one more turn. You have received details of his enemy's plans, and the day before the deadline you send these to your "ally", just in time for him to amend his orders to take account of this new information. But suppose, in your haste to address the envelope and get it posted in time, you put "Monument Rd' for "Monmouth Rd". Quite a natural slip, one would think. But the delay this mistake causes is enough to ensure that the information does not reach its destination until its usefulness is ended, and you have at once fulfilled your obligations to both your allies - or appeared to And that's all that matters to you.

Grantland also had a good article :

http://grantland.com/features/diplomacy-the-board-game-of-the-alpha-nerds/

Quote
One of those men, Brian Ecton, a high school math teacher from Prince George’s County, Maryland, with hair like Katt Williams and a mouth to match, approached me right at the start, sizing me up as a beginner and offering an alliance. He explained exactly how it would work and said we’d share a draw at the end. I had no reason not to agree.

For the next several hours each of the other players would take turns dragging me aside to explain to me how Brian was manipulating me, how he was going to betray me, how I should betray him first and work with them against Brian.

(...)

“Don’t you realize that some of us traveled a very long distance to win this tournament?” a player from France said to me with disgust. “And because you won’t stab this guy, you’re going to die and bring all of us down with you.”

“Are you going to be paid for writing this story?” a Scottish player asked me. “Because I am losing three days’ wages to be here so that I can get screwed by you.”

I still don’t know whom I should have trusted, if anyone. All I know is that I felt stupid, stressed out, humiliated, and sad. I had several shouting matches with a few of these guys. Some of them got personal. And all I had to show for my loyalty to Brian Ecton and my righteous indignation toward the other players was nothing at all. I was physically exhausted and emotionally abused. I hated Brian, the other players all hated me, and I hated myself most of all. I had to purse my lips extra hard to fight the urge to cry.

Quote
Now here he was, midway through a game he had played well for months. He and two other players stood to share a three-way draw. He read the sentence in the letter again. I am not against a three-way draw and I will not take any more supply centers …

Edi took out scissors and a pen from a drawer and set to work on the letter, painstakingly doctoring it. When he was finished he held up the letter proudly and read it to himself. I am against a three-way draw and I will take three more supply centers … He put the forgery in the mail to the third player. Then he waited.

I don't think so.  The app has tutorial but it's kind of skimpy.

There's YouTube videos

I have played exactly one game of Diplomacy, in college. The guy running it explained the rules, but not the context. We made all our deals privately, returned to the table and the moves were revealed. Things went normally for a couple rounds, and then he betrayed everyone and won. The idea that players could backstab anyone was never introduced, so I was completely caught off guard and wiped from the map in the first betrayal. The guy "teaching" the game won a turn or two later, and was giddy about it.

We also played RPGs in the same group. He was a dick there, too. I killed at least one of his PCs for being a megalomaniac necromancer.

Felt good.

I tried to get into Diplomacy but just couldn't. I much prefer Risk/WarGear. Easier to grok.
