Yoshi’s Island: Still the GOAT Mario game

So I’ve been playing Yoshi’s Island for the first time since the 90s. I’ve been at it for about 4 hours now, and the game has singlehandedly convinced me that NINTENDO MAGIC is real again. Tomorrow I’m selling my PS4 Pro, buying some adult diapers and overalls, and moving in with TastyMeat/Pamperchu.

Ya know what? It's not a Mario game. Not a mainline one anyway, even if they threw the moniker SMW2 on it.

It's so fresh an imaginative. I can only imagine what the design sessions were like.

It's the best game in the Mario series, hands down. It has some of the most inventive design out of any of the 2D games without a doubt.

Yoshi's Island is lit af. Wish they would use Yoshi more as a nintendo character in general for their games

Didn't like it. But I was 21 when it was released and was into games like Doom and Warcraft II at that point. I was pretty much done with 2d console gaming, and probably didn't give it a fair shake.


Sunshine is my favorite Mario game. It had the right balance of difficulty, exploration and silly Mario humor. The prologue is terrible, but once you get past that it's a joy.

the ol legend is that after the huge success of DKC, some Nintendo higher ups suggested that Miyamoto use him some prerendered CG sprites like that hit (which Miyamoto wasn't a fan of game-wise though he did like the art for Donkey Kong), and so he was like lol fuck you and that's why it has the kiddie drawing art style it does

and a lot of the boss fights are what necessitated the SuperFX2 inclusion
