Well shiiiiiit looks like I'm gonna have to buy a Switch after all.

Persona 5 was my first SMT game ( yeah I know it's a spin off ) and I really loved it. Jumped into Nocturne after that and had a great time but kinda got stuck in kabarucho prison or whatever it was called. Cant find the goddamn hole to find that bill collector manekin.

But everything I've played of SMT Nocturne is pretty fucking awesome, so I cant wait to jump into more SMT stuff.

My Switch purchase was already justified, but it's nice that we're getting more awesome games for the system.

I completely fell off of SMT4 when it started leaning on the open world kinda stuff also the story was kinda boring, but I think I could see myself giving this a try.

Hell yes. Love playing handheld SMT. Even if I never played past the 3rd or 4th area after the intro of 4. I need to get back to that and finish it so I can play Apocalypse. Kind of glad there isn't a release date for this yet. It'll probably take me a year to get through 4 and 4A. Too many games.

Looks very Nocturne-esque in aesthetic.

:yeshrug

Not really excited. I'll wait until more details come out to see if they have further Persona-ized the series. Until then, who cares. It's still a modern jrpg. Watch it be a bloated, mollycoddling mess.

Does that mean they'll have good waifus like Persona?  :doge

What's funny is P5 feels a lot like old Megaten at points.  Shit the final sequence in P5 might as well have been a love letter to SMT 2.

I wouldn't know because I dropped the game during the second dungeon but there was also that random dungeon place that felt kind of old SMT at least in aesthetic. Had some Amala labyrinth look here and there.

SMT4 is my only experience with the mainline series. I thought the story and setting were both awesome but those characters in your group were "holy-shit" bad. Also, the overworld map was some Lovecraftian horror of secret passages and impossible angles.

I'll give this a shot if it is received well.

Day 1 when the English release comes out in 2020.

Nintendo-Exclusive for now and since Atlus is pretty bad about ports it'll probably stay that way.

One day you'll be able to play it at 8k through an emulator though.

Music sounds like the SMT4 guy. He's good but still kinda annoyed we only get a new Meguro soundtrack every 4-5 years of Persona. Dude used to be a machine putting out like a soundtrack a year during the PS2 days.

They said they decided to put it on Switch just because you can play on portable mode. I guess that's fair, at least the Switch is getting a somewhat decent library.

Also there's nothing stopping them from porting it if they wanna, though Atlus doesn't have much of a history with porting shit

Kinda don't have interest in jrpgs atm thanks to P5. Waiting for a game for 9 years and hating it. I just can't. I don't even care about DQ11. Shame. I'll wait for vids of this game to see if I want to get it. If it's a sold out piece of shit like Persona 5 that focuses on story rather than gameplay, then I have no interest.

When you do Kamoshida's dungeon?  ???  I'm not going to say P5's dungeons are in the same stratosphere as Strange Journey, but they're far more interesting than the collection of mostly large, empty, rooms that comprise IV/A's "dungeons".

disliked the characters/art direction/general presentation of 4 and 4a quite a bit, hope this one ends up closer to Nocturne or Strange Journey in those regards. hard to tell from the teaser, but the little camera pan in the underground with all the demons scattered around reminds me of how the camera is used in 4a to give some kind of dynamism to still images with after effects animations laid on top. registering as a hater tbh

I'd say the Space Station and Casino dungeons are the best SMT dungeons since the PS2 era. It takes 40-50 to get there though.

All of them are a big step up from the randomly generated ones in P3 and P4.

I don't know what people want from dungeons honestly. People said TMS had great dungeons and I could do was read on super confused. They weren't pleasing to look at or even complex enough to feel satisfying to beat.

Really, I prefer dungeons to be simple to get through and cool to look at it. That's it, I'm not into puzzles.

SMT3 and DDS.

Has nothing to do with puzzles. What I expect from a good dungeon: resource management, difficulty spikes, traps, risk/reward.

What I played of p5 was a straight tube with linear structure so you hide behind a couch and then ambush enemies, repeat.

4A is a continuation of the neutral path from 4 and is great.. fixes a lot of the issues with 4 and feels more SMT-like than 4 did to me. May you find it in your heart to return to good JRPGs like SMT and DQ after being led astray.

The dungeons are better in the sense that they're structured.  But the little puzzles and exploration fun wears off pretty quick if you're a grinder like I am.  The stealth crap gets worn out real fast.

I prefer the random generated dungeons of P4G.  There's a randomly generated dungeon section called mementos in p5 that is a poor substitute.  Really, my main issue with the dungeons and encounters in p5 is how slow encounters can be.  The battles themselves go pretty quick, but the post-battle segment takes too long and there are certain perks that can slow the start of a battle significantly.  To the point where you would rather not even unlock those perks, but they can't be toggled off and they come along with the social links.  And trying to stealth into some of the encounters can be a time consuming hassle.

One dungeon in particular that made me want to kill myself involved getting turned into a rat to go through different tunnels.

I don't want to say anymore about that disappointing game though.
Instead I need to focus on how I'm gonna be able to afford a Switch so I can buy, and later complain about, SMT5!  :hyper

I was enjoying P5 up until about 85% of the way through when they try to force a really stupid """""""twist"""""""" and try to make you feel bad for a dipshit character. It didn't work on me and soured me on the game until the very end when I finally I just went "well, at least it ended well." In the end can't be too bad, not very often a game comes along and entertains you for a 100 hours straight. So bravo to them I guess.

It's weird how much I loved this series and just completely switched off. This trailer kinda pleases me, but SM4 made a lot of changes that I didn't like and I'm too tired of the weeb shit in Persona now. I think I like Etrian Odyssey more at this point, although that series is probably dead now :goldberg

That being said, is SMT4 worth a try? How many hours does it take to beat it once

Gonna be cautious with my hype until more concrete infos come out. I'm bailing if SMT4:A is an indicator of what's to come. Animu-fying Strange Journey doesn't sit well with me either.

Yes, SMT4 rules

And SMT4A is better than SMT4

I see this sentiment regurarely and don't get it. Apart from the mechanics, aren't we all playing SMT for the atmosphere? Because that happy-go-lucky, childhood waifu, power of friendship, pokemon shit in SMT4A absolutely killed it for me.

Yes, Nocturne is probably the best place to start. It's more or less universally appreciated.

The iOS version of Shin Megami Tensei is also good, but it's annoying to play without an autosave feature. I don't want to lose my progress by responding to an email.

Nocturne is really, really good, but I also never finished it (not a big JRPG guy). As said above, it's certainly more dry and focused than Persona games and all about the combat system, managing your party monsters, merging and acquiring them. It takes places in a mostly barren post-apocalyptic wasteland and follows a byzantine occult plot that have the effect of squarely funneling everything back to the mechanics and the combat. There's a beautiful melancholy and sadness to it all, but it's maybe not for everyone. I know some hardcore gamers will say there's no grinding so long as you git gud but I think it's a bit of a rose tinted opinion. Regardless, be warned the game first real boss can be a sudden peak of difficulty. Things rarely get as frustrating after that (at least as far as I went, I had 30 or 40h IIRC ?) unless you go for the optional dungeons which are designed to be hard.

It's perfectly playable without grinding, although I never tried to beat the optional difficult dungeon. The key to success in Nocturne is buffs/debuffs.
