For all the comparisons to 90s trek it reminds the most of the adventure stuff from that era, Xena etc. From the dramatic beats they cut on to commerical breaks, it feels like something out of 1997.

I didn't think ppl could actually make shows like this anymore, partly because they aren't really shot like this anymore either lol.

This finale felt like Stargate especially.

It's TNG + Seth's humor.

From what I've seen, it appears that teleporters are not a part of this Trek-ish universe. Wonder why they chose to leave them out. Makes for a lot of shuttle shots.
Many episodes of Star Trek I'm left wondering, "why don't they use the transporter?"

Makes the away missions much riskier.

Yeah, I'm probably saying stuff everyone here knows, but the Transporter was introduced in TOS to cut down on the effects budget, but ended up opening the biggest can of worms for storytelling. Why can't they just beam them up? Why not lock transporters onto the aliens who have taken the bridge hostage, and hold them in the transport-buffers until you can reach space prison? Or beam them into space?

Enterprise actually hangs a lampshade on it at one point, telling a rube that the Transporter is their means of a human execution. So when they "execute" Archer, they actually just beam him to another part of the ship, after which he engages them in guerrilla warfare.

The second biggest "why don't they…" for me is in Next Generation's later seasons, and it's "Why don't they just ask Guinan?" She seems to know just about every unknown they come across, but some stories she's there, most of them, she's not.

The usual answer for me was that Guinan is a Space-Know-It-All, and didn't actually get along with the ship's computer, which frequently locked Guinan in her room as a kind of practical joke.

By the way, while I'm happy about the ENTERPRISE' last season turning out so fantastic, I dislike the theme song more than ever.

It's so ridiculous to have that rhythm-guitar pop after the cold-open scenes, esp. when they transition from season 3's darker themes into Kenny-Loggins-esque. All they had to do was use the ending credits song — and it turns out, that was their damned plan! Look how good this is!

Been watching tonight. I'm up to episode four. Episode three was fantastic. The ending was a classic TOS tragic ending type deal.

I really, really like it and find it a perfect compliment series to Discovery.

The humor falls flat a bit and there's a bit too much calling people dicks, tho. And the direction feels inferior to even something like TNG or DS9. But those are nitpicks.

Great show.

I predict the robot evolves into the villain in future seasons, having collected enough data on Union ships and tactics to conquer them.

but the robot's species are superior. why tf would they need to do that to collect all that data when that one little robo dude can use his fingers to get into any computer system and learn all they need about the union with one hack? Robot dude is Data. He will grow more human over time and learn to understand humanity. That's Star Trek 101.

I'm not sure if the comedy detracts or adds to the show. Sometimes it adds something. Other times it feels like the jokes just keep coming when you're trying to enjoy the story being told. The episode Krill is a great example of this conflict.

Like, it's hard to take the Union seriously. I kind of don't see them as Federation tier after that episode. Jokes are one thing, but when the senior officers come across as that incompetent when put on a spy mission aboard an enemy ship it is in-universe shattering. These are supposed to be experts and they're acting like incompetents. Compare the episode to A Matter of Honor, which the episode rips off and it's night and fucking day. Basically, the shows comedic edge at time acts as a deterrence to its writing quality and lowers it to crap tier television, which the show definitely is not.

The show does need to find the right groove on its comedy/drama mix. It's workplace comedy styling put into a Trek show. The banter works when they're on the bridge. Feels out of place in other areas.

So does this show want you to believe this is an utopia and humanity has evolved to a next stage TNG style? Because if so, they're not really doing a good job of it. Sometimes it works and you can buy into it. But other times, ehhhhh. But to its credit, it's season 1 and I'm sure they'll work out the kinks in season 2.

Like, how the fuck did the crew of the Orville go down to that planet in Majority Rule and know about the fact that they live in an equivalent of 21st century earth but not know about the justice system that the entire planet revolves around? In Star Trek, Federation does reconnaissance. Mother fucking Riker was under cover via the Prime Directive for how long in that one episode to understand the planets society? But they have guys who can't report the basics of the planets justice system? And they go to planets dry humping statues? And they want us to believe that the Union is a Federation equivalent and not a bunch of bumbling fucking distinguished mentally-challenged fellows? And think this is not badly written? And alt right Star Trek fans are saying this is better than Discovery?

Now, I like the show a lot.

But excuse me while I laugh very, very loudly.

So what's the goal of the show? Is it a parody? Is it for real? Does it not know what it wants to be?

I'm going to laugh at anyone who says this show is better than Discovery from now on after watching Majority Rule. I like the show, but please. :lol

Humping the statue was also stolen from The Next Generation.

I don't mind thievery, but steal the good stuff. Don't steal the bit where someone thinks it's a good idea to let Wesley play on the alien planet with the draconian rule system.

I think season two will be better.

While I like this season just fine so far, I don't like it as much as the first season, the fact that they are toning down the humor kinda worries my initial reaction was OK, does Seth have the chops to pull it off? Is this going to turn into not understanding the spirit of Trek like the TNG Trek Movies, the Abrams flicks and STD?

It is just me or is the show less colorful now, still think the show is pretty colorful but I swear the lighting is darker and colors don't pop as much.

Ready, aim ... oh, wait there's a new star. Okay, release the prisoners and send them back to their ship. Oh, and we'll change our society, too

Did I get that wrong?

At the very least wouldn't they have shot the prisoners for murdering guards?
