how hard do you work?
« on: October 27, 2017, 12:57:52 PM »
on a general work day?

i freelance so i generally put in a decent shift when i'm on the job which will seep into overtime on the reg, but i'm fairly happy to turn down work if i'm not feeling it and will fuck it off for months at a time to go off somewhere if i've got a decent bit of wedge built up. not sure my work ethic has really kicked on from the resentment that came in when the teacher started setting homework.

my work schedule is all messed up honestly. Some days it's like 3-4 hours then the next day is 12-16 then back to 5 then up 14 and so on. For my sanity I try to keep it to around 40-45 though I fail most times

Depends.

Used to work at a blood lab doing a variety manual tasks. We had a set quota each day. I was a great worker in that environment. Doing a good job meant getting to leave earlier/on time.

Now I work at an office with zero structure. I have a team lead who is unqualified for the position. On some days I have a very clear plan for what I need to do. On other days there's really nothing for me to do other than perhaps work on automating some of my job, but there's no incentive to really do that since then the company could simply fire me and keep those scripts. So on those days I sit and pretend to work and just browse the web.

Really the major problem is I'm not a self starter/self motivated. I like being given clear tasks and executing those tasks. I actually think I would enjoy retail/service jobs or factory line work. Too bad those jobs don't really pay or don't exist in America.

(honestly though most weeks I'm way over. But it's gotten to a point where I started having breakdowns (see July-August) if I keep it up for too long then I need a few weeks off to recover. Overall, I'm more efficient if I scale back to human hours)

If it's a staycation and I don't have plans I get bored as fuck sitting at home and prefer going to work.  I generally like my job though.

I'm not sure you could even call most of what I do work.  Half of it is meetings where we discuss future hypothetical work and overcome corporate politics and red tape.

TBH i think it may have been worthwhile in terms of lifestyle if nothing else (breadth of opportunities counts for something in this market too though). Honestly can't see myself doing this shit for too long, i jumped the shark with this whole thing. Seeing my techs go through hardship is kind of humbling but I still plan to brute force my way to biomedical info. with more (COMPLETELY SUBSIDIZED) edumacation once my debt burden is lowered.  Having a clinical gig makes it worthwhile, even though in the end we are kind of yes men :(

I don't really work more than 45 hours a week and during that time I don't really make that much of an effort. It's rather undemanding and boring work though since I'm on meds I'm more motivated and I've gotten more productive in the process.

If I'll ever get around finishing my master's degree and manage to land a more interesting position I could see myself working more.

About 70 hours a week.  Sometime it spikes up past 80 and that gets pretty miserable.

I'm a loser so it isn't like I need a bunch of free time.

Full remote. I actually find myself working harder than when I was in an office and couldn’t resist the temptation to go dick around and take a 2 hour lunch or go see a movie in the middle of the day. If I feel like I accomplish a lot in 6-7 hours I’ll monitor things and go play a game or something.

The day I have to go back into an office and start commuting again won’t be a pretty one.

"New gig" within the RCMP.  I got a promotion six months ago from a front-line investigative unit to a support unit that provides assistance, guidance and training in writing legal applications.

While working for a company, I'd put in 45-50 hours normally, and then 70-80 during crunch which included one weekend day, but never both. I tried it once, and it's not a "7-day-workweek," it's a 12~13-day workweek, and that just messed up my damned brain.

Now that I'm subcontracting, when it rains, it pours. I like the larger per-contract payouts, but I'm honestly not sure if regular hours and a steady paycheck aren't preferable. If I felt confident that I could face a Japanese work environment again, I might try. But I'm not there yet. I'm enjoying setting my own schedule and having the freedom to start and stop when I like. And I enjoy working my ass off.

Yeah, working in a grocery store can get pretty strenuous at times, especially if I have to stock the bottled water section. Today I had to pick up some cases of steak from another store. Those were about 80 pounds each. Thankfully I only had to get three of them this time.

I’ve been working for my country’s federal government for almost 20 years. I work 40 hours a week. I’m in middle management now, so about 2/3 of that time is in meetings. If it weren’t for the meetings, this job would be a breeze. I take the meetings so that my staff can do most of the real work by email.

Recently these past few weeks, not much at all. I'm essentially a contractor, but I have a weird schedule in that I don't have a solid set schedule. I come in whenever there's work. So over the Summer, which is generally our busiest season, I was easily doing 40-50 hour weeks (I could have done more by coming in on the weekends, but I've been less interested in doing that since we moved into our new building which has HORRENDOUS parking). Recently, I've barely been doing 8-10 hours a week since shit's gone slow again.  :'(

Aside from the problem of lack of money that results from such a thing, not going into work makes me antsy as I need something to do. Otherwise, I honestly don't mind going in as I love my job. It's not career-worthy, and I'm getting paid a shitload less that what I should be considering my experience, but it's easy, I have great autonomy, cool co-workers and an extremely chill environment. Hopefully work picks up again.

Honestly it varies. I'm a chef, and I work in a very tourism/seasonal-driven part of the country, so during some months I have a lot of work, other times not so much. Although right now we had to cut down on staff significantly, so nowadays I have to jump behind the line and actually cook a lot more. But still, with the slow business working a station is like auto pilot. Now during season, I might do 50-60 hours a week. When we opened the current place I'm at, I was working 85 hour weeks, 7 days for a couple of months.

I started my current job back in June and it's like 40 hours a week on the nose. They're all about family and not taking your work home with you, so it's like as soon as 5:00 rolls around, everybody makes for the door. Seriously, if you pole your head up from your desk at 5:01, the place is empty.

I love it, but it's still so weird to me. My last several jobs were basically "stay til you're done" type affairs.

Not very (70hr fortnight), but it's a change of pace from my previous job where was fast paced the whole time and burnt me out. Problem is now that pay and benefits are great but anything more interesting or challenging pays less with more stress

I work in finance/payroll.

Can't really go into detail of where I work - but there's three of us who in my team responsible for about 4k staff monthly. I directly am responsible for half of that, two specific paygroups, and I'm the first contact for any issues throughout the UK for those two sections. There's a good million or so quid in payments I have to ensure are correct each month before putting it through to my manager then the finance director for payment. So basically, I have to put 110% effort in every hour of each day.

in any case, I love it there despite the pressure at times. lots of freedom to get around problems with software and other issues using my initiative, and being on a flexi-time rota is awesome as if I work extra one week, I can have a day off the next. very good pay and a very good pension scheme helps too.

and the best thing is I never have to go back into retail now. No matter how hard I work in this job, nothing can be as stressful as running a retail store which I did a few years back. Fuck that.

I would give anything to back to working 60 to 70 hour weeks. Being disabled is far from a joyous way to spend life.
