I have some credits left on Audible so I wanted to ask for some recommendations.

The quality of the novel aside, what's especially important for me with audiobooks is the narrator's skills in acting out different roles. So I'd also welcome recommendations for specific narrators. And I also don't mind full radio plays.

The guy that sits next to me at work swears by some author that narrates his own books, says it feels more authentic as the writer doesn't need external direction to read the emotive state of the scene, I forget which writer though

I don't like the dude who did Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep?. He also did The Passage. I don't really do audiobooks tho. I much prefer reading. Then again I never leave the house so...

I prefer reading too, mostly because I'm way quicker with finishing books that way. But they're not bad listening to when doing mindless shit at work, during a drive or while jogging (though I mostly prefer listening to music while doing the latter).

The guy that does the first 4 books of the dark tower series does an incredible job.

Tim Curry narrated Umberto Eco's Foucalt's Pendulum, but IIRC it's an abridged edition? Maybe it's the full version.

Alan Rickman narrated Return of the Native, and he is a god, so you should also get that.

In trashier entertainment, The Dresden Files are narrated by James Marsters, the guy who played Spike on Buffy. He is seriously very good, keeps it understated and very immersive.

Thx for the suggestions. I actually listened to the audiobook of the first Dresden novel years ago but didn't really like it. The book itself was kinda juvenile and crappy and while the narrator was okay, I didn't like the voices he did for the women parts. Though I think that's general problem with male narrators :P I hear the Dresden books get better with book 3 or so so maybe I'll jump in again. I'll also look into the other recommendations, though since audiobooks are mostly for work I'll keep it with the more undemanding and trashy entertainment.

Like at the moment I'm listening to Star Wars: Dark Disciple, narrated by Marc Thompson (he was voicing the distinguished mentally-challenged jock Kevin on MTV's Daria). That guy is really talented, plus all those Star Wars audiobooks are allowed to use sound effects and music from the movies which is also nice. The book itself is okay (especially for being a continuation to the boring Clone Wars show) but I'm at it since summer and struggle to finish it. I got back into Star Wars books with the release of Episode VII but I think I've outgrown this stuff...

The guy that does the first 4 books of the dark tower series does an incredible job.

You mean Frank Muller? Three years ago I listened to Elmore Leonard's Freaky Deaky which was narrated by him, and I was amazed by his talent. Thanks for reminding me about him again. Maybe he did another Leonard.

Yeah, Dresden's first book is just about unreadable. Most of my friends said, "It gets MUCH BETTER! Keep going!"

…and it does. It's quite enjoyable and has a pretty epic plot, and Harry Dresden's sexism and white knight stuff gets put into proper perspective and ridiculed for the unsubtle, backward, juvenile problems they are. Harry improves a little, but mainly the people surrounding him point out how ridiculous he's being, and prove Harry wrong on those fronts.

It gets good by the fifth book, and it's not like you're committing to David Eddings' extruded fantasy product, or stuck waiting for the next GRRM brick.

Yeah.  Poor guy.  I was super bummed when I went and read up on why someone else took over the others.

Yep.  That's him.  I've heard him in a few things and he always does an amazing job.
