Something I don't get, that probably would get you crucified if brought up over there...if representation of women in games matters so much and has all these real-world effects, then why isn't violence in games having any real-world effect?

If violence in games lets people get their frustrations out and keeps them cooped up indoors, off the streets, likely lowering the crime rate...wouldn't sexiness in games let nerds get their sexual frustrations out and reduce sexual harassment and rape?  Isn't it good that people can get titillated gaming instead of going out and bothering real women?

There's more than enough animu games I'm not going to touch because of painfully stupid (female) characters (especially ever since the whole fanservice stuff went into pedo-territory). But I'm not delusional enough to make such a gigantic constant fuss over character designs for weebs that simply aren't important in real life ( - if anything, I find the military porn such people conveniently handwave more questionable within the current social climate tbh). It's like people that don't shut up about that stuff need to compensate that they don't do anything real progressive with their time. But in the end, it's just fucking weeb games.

I agree. One of my favorite games this gen was Zero Escape 2 and god knows I wish it didn't have two lewd/creep-baiting main characters, which makes it way too hard to recommend to normal people. I was mainly dissing the typical GAF discourse regarding these things, which simply takes it to redundant and stupid extremes.

After going through the thread a bit, I'm a little disappointed in some responses to this. Llyrwenne laid out a well-constructed, measured OP. Reasonable, non-hyperbolic, intelligent, and thoughtful. The very first reply post is an immediate dismissal with no substance attached whatsoever. Other posts range from dismissive whataboutisms to clear inability to accept. Is is truly that difficult to empathize and understand that issues like this affect people differently from all walks of life? Women, minorities, LBGT, etc have every right to feel misrepresented in anything whether it be film, video games, or whatever the case may be. They have a right to want that to improve, not to slight men or say gaming is in a complete gutter, but to feel like they belong too. There is nothing wrong with this and it should instead be encouraged.

As a man myself and a game enthusiast since I was a boy, it's clear to see that video games are not a 'boys only' pleasure anymore. In fact, they never truly were, and that should be something that is welcomed people.
