My boss at work got on me about it recently. She hasn’t historically had a problem with me reading the forum because I’ve explained it’s a news source for me. But lately she’s been skeptical because “how much news can you possibly be consuming?”

There’s just so much news, I told her. It never stops. She asked me if I remember what it’s like to not be so obsessed with the daily emissions of the American machine and I told her I could not. She told me to get back to work.

I'm playing catch up on this and am probably just gonna look like a jackass to this board, but whatever. The fact that poster is acting that way and as a result you're saying ignorant things like this sucks. This is kind of like a trans person's worst outlook on all this horseshit and why a good chunk of us don't wanna mess with people like the ERA loonies. There are about a million legitimate reasons for the trans community to reject Jenner in a lot of ways, and she def doesn't represent as "one of their own" and all that nonsense. And like I said earlier, some of the points that person has are real problems that trans people deal with.

But that poster is also insane, militant, and argues in ways that are super arrogant and aggressive. They can't make a coherent point, and can't have a human conversation about it. They just kind of rattle off the bullet points and yell like crazy until they just sound like a dumb ass Trumper bot on reddit in a different flavor. I think pretty much everybody agrees on that front. The issue is they're considered to be posting in good faith and doing great things for the movement while acting like that by "allies".

Then you leave that bubble and people see the lunacy and their reaction is, "that person is insane and I should probably mock everything they are saying." Like a dumb ass Trump bot on reddit. Just leads to more ignorance and fighting and eventually ends in "don't fuck with the cheeseburgers they're nutjobs." Kind of a bummer to just try to live your life and make things a bit better where you can, then you have those kinds of people "representing" your worldview or whatever.

Edit: As I've explained here and there, it doesn't bother me when someone says I'm "obsessed" or something to that effect since I'm acutely aware of the perception I've created for myself over the years and therefore couldn't in good conscience hold that conclusion against them even if I wanted to, but I'd be lying if I said it isn't dispiriting whenever such a comment comes from a fellow member of this particular community.

I've been part of this community since 1999, a volunteer admin about a year after that, de facto in charge of it about a year after that, and officially owner/operator of the site since 2004. I have given a lot to this place over the years, and I've stuck with it longer than most in the forum industry have with their projects. It takes its toll to stay active and engaged in that role for so long. That's how I rather suddenly and shockingly became morbidly obese when I started running NeoGAF as a full time business in '06. It's not the path to a balanced lifestyle, generally, forum running. It was solitude and hell after that for quite some time in my personal life, and I only barely pulled myself out of that with enormous effort and stubbornness back in 2009-2012 or so. After that I needed to live life some and make up for lost time.. Doing so wasn't always in balance with what NeoGAF needed, admittedly, but I kept trying to do right by the community along the way.

I'm still here and I'm not going anywhere. I can't *always* be here, though, all day every day 24/7, and when there were 75,000 posts per day and millions of visitors as things ended up, it's not a simple task to radically change the status quo with a few sincere personal appeals and some directives to some mods who had vastly different agendas and who I should not have trusted in retrospect. 2016 in particular I was very busy trying to ensure the site's future by dealing with the adblock crisis that had emerged on the internet -- always wanted to keep the site totally free, merch was always sold at cost, giveaways and whatnot were out of my pocket, etc. I didn't run this site to extract money from my users; I volunteered and took on a responsibility, and I took that responsibility seriously. After I got the ad situation out of quite so dire circumstances in 2016 I focused on getting NeoGAF off of its end of life platform after that so that we could modernize it finally. I was focused on the big picture stuff on NeoGAF and the day to day moderation was almost all being done collectively by the mod team and not myself, but I was still here every day. 2017 was just darkness and death and hell for me on a personal level, one thing after another, and bish secretly mass banning all the moderate posters on off-topic was disastrous, and post-election in general so many people lashed out at me every time I tried to course correct afterwards or even engage in any thread on what I felt was a level and reasoned way that I was losing my sense of my place in this community. I had a ton of plans laid out for post-migration that didn't have a chance to happen after the false #metoo thing came out and the site imploded, but now we're getting there and it's great to feel a sense of community forming again and in a positive and diverse way.

I'm sorry that I didn't do more when the doing could have mattered, or if you felt I went absentee on the site. I was still here, but focused on the technical and financial sides, increasingly reluctant to interact with the community directly, and all the personal stuff going on had taken me down to about 5% power level when that absurd scandal hit. I'm fine with a fresh start, though. I needed a fresh start too after such a painful year last year from beginning to end. Things got away from me in recent times on NeoGAF but that's in the past now. I'm not going to talk myself up about my ability to run a community, but I do have some experience with this stuff. I don't care about what some other forum is doing, particularly, other than always trying to learn from what others are doing well and what they're doing poorly. I've seen most of the forums on the internet come and go since I've been here for a very long time. Don't get too caught up in some other forum, whatever that forum is. Everyone seemed to think "NeoGAF except without EviLore" was a good thing, I guess. I don't begrudge anyone that, but forums come and go and any asshole can start a forum with a few mouse clicks. I'm your asshole, though.

NeoGAF will live or die on its own merits...but it's going to live. Lots more fun stuff in development right now that I think a lot of folks will enjoy. Stick around and help us shape a new and improved status quo. And please be decent to each other and let's try to get away from the absurd hyper-partisan, polarized, hostile us vs them sociopolitical vibes that poisoned things so badly last year. Spirited arguments are great, but at the end of the day, don't forget to pass the peace pipe. Thanks.
