Modern radio country isn't what people mean by country music. Whatever is left on radio is barely indistinguishable from another song or another genre. In the early 00s, labels and stations got big into cross-over play and what exists on radio and billboard charts is the bland monstrosity that trend produced. Top rock albums are not rock music. Country sounds like pop, rock and hip hop. Hip hop stations are playing pop. It's all fucking pop music.

Country eras/styles to listen to:
-The classic era: Patsy Cline, Hank Williams, Marty Robbins, George Jones
-Country Swing: Bob Willis
-Bakersfield Sound: Buck Owens, Merle Haggard, Dwight Yoakam
-Outlaw Country: Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash
-70s/80s big time acts: Kenny Rogers, John Denver, Johnny Lee, Linda Rodstadt, Dolly Parton, Glen Campbell(though he began in the 60s)
-Bluegrass: Earl Scruggs, Doc Watson, John Hartford

This post has spent up all my Super Cac Points.

Don't forget the whole No Depression thing from the 90s - Uncle Tupelo, Whiskeytown, Old 97s, and about 15 years of alt-country that emerged from it.  That was some good shit.

Yeah, I forgot Alt-Country. I didn't put in any of the 90s mainstream stars either.

As for recent artists, Sturgill Simpson does a spacey, tripped out country take. I like the Avett Brothers though they lost some of their punk edge and went a bit too piano heavy.

I dunno, 90's country was pretty good. A little poppy but the lyrics were very clever.

Now it's just honestly... really terrible. I don't know who it's supposed to appeal to.

The odd thing about this 'people who say rap music isn't real music are racist' shit is you kind of have to ignore the fact that there other black genres of music. I'm pretty sure you would be hard pressed to find someone who would say Soul or Reggae isn't music, for instance.

I didn't totally leave out the 90s. I included Dwight Yoakam!

I have no prob with the 90s stuff. You're right in that it was a bit poppy, but so were the 70/80 star days when country stylings were all over rock music. (They also had a bit of Vegas Elvis in them(And Turtles all the Way down is Supicious Minds, so the influence isn't lost)) The difference between those eras and now is mainly the song writing quality. What gets played now are not songs that anyone is aching to cover like how a lot of the 90s R&B hits that came from country writers at the time.

I think the audience for "mainstream" music has changed so much in the last 10 years that it's intentionally being targeted at people who are too old to want to hear anything new.  Everyone in my age bracket (upper 30s) who listens to music goes to Pandora or Spotify now.  I have a niece and nephew in high school, and it's hilarious to even imagine them tuning into a radio station.  They mostly listen to hip-hop.  Kids are into that or they're into electronic stuff.  The people pushing the bland pop music onto the radio aren't really reaching anyone between the age of 10 and 40 at all, from what I can see, and I don't think they care anymore.

I will mention: that baseline completely makes this song. One of the best baselines in a song ever.

Also, this post man.

That's a good point.  Every pop song now is just the dumbest tinkertoy melody with the most basic arrangement possible, but if they can auto-tune a decent vocalist enough so that it sounds "emotional", that crowd will eat it up.

I used to listen to Hip Hop a lot. One of my favourite rappers is Busta Rhymes for instance. When Disaster Strikes is an absolute classic.

That said, I can at least get what people are talking about. I can see why to some people it may seem like some drunk guy has just got up and started shouting on the stage. Rapping isn't particularly melodic. Some people see music as like singing not shouting down a mic. Of course I don't entirely agree but I at least get it.

Please don't rock the boat. Bob Marley is one of the greatest musicians to ever live. And whether some people believe all Reggae sounds the same, what they are not saying is Reggae is not music. :p

What's great about this is that if a recording studio released an official ensemble effort of all these artists, it would be virtually identical to this.  It's like "We are the world" but instead of having to wrangle 100 irritating celebrity musicians you just have one guy with Ableton who gets all the vocal tracks from his sharepoint.

Well, I'm not really. I am a fan of Bob Marley. He never wrote a bad song. Not one. Every song has some hook that pulls you in. In this song for instance, "Every need has an Ego to feed". Every song has a similar kind of hook.

Waiting in Vain is Bob Marleys best song.

I don't know what my favourite one is. It's changed many times. So obvious ones would be Redemption Song, No Woman No Cry, Satisfy My Soul, etc.

Honestly, I'm not sure many people know Bob Marley outside of Legend. Some of his stuff that isn't on that Album(It's more of a greatest hits) tends to be underrated.
