Super Mario 3D Land with 3D on.
Nier - the bashing of its gameplay is overblown.
Ninja Gaiden 2/Sigma 2/Dragon's Sword/Razor's Edge/whatever - Ninja Gaiden since 2 had the best battle system of anything, too bad there was no definite iteration for it.
Metal Gear Solid V - I don't care about MGS story, so no disappointment there.

Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story
Resident Evil Revelations 2 - fanservice might have helped my enjoyment, I loved this as a longtime series fan.

Pillars of Eternity (modern baldurs gate... awesome to get back to that lost style of isometric RPG)
Burnout Paradise (Burnout Revenge on the 360 is outside the 10 year window, or it would have taken this slot, brilliant arcade racer, brilliant multiplayer)
Red Dead Redemption (best story, action, western says it all really)
Portal + Portal 2 (best villainess, best humour)
Civ 5 (endless hours of one more turn)
Firewatch (that game was deeply emotional for me)
Far Cry 2 (loved the savannah, and setting it as well as the mercenaries on fire)

Skyrim's value is in its accessibility. It's the only RPG I can think of that you can pick up after an indefinite break and get your bearings within 10 minutes and just have fun playing. It's also shallow as fuck in service of that goal, which earns it a lot of scorn, but still, it "just works."

Also, it's serious compulsion fodder, but that's a personal problem.

Red Dead Redemption - atmosphere, music, everything is so evocative of the time period. my favorite open world title by far
Street Fighter 4 (series) - the game and series that brought me back to seriously playing fighters competitively
Zelda: BOTW - the best 3d zelda without question
Super Mario Galaxy - my favorite 3d mario, just so unique and fun. plus i played through most of it when completely snowed in on a mountain so it brings me back to that weekend every time i think about it
GTAV - three great characters, a fantastic living city, and goddamn it is gorgeous
Super Mario Odyssey - fun, full of exploration, awesome music, neat gimmick, just the best mario game that i never knew i wanted
WoW: Wrath of the Lich King - not the best wow expansion but the most fun i've had with my friends playing together and has the best raid blizzard ever designed
Mass Effect 2 - an excellent mix of rpg and action with a great sci fi story, plus martin sheen and that chick with the great ass
Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood - the best ac game (yes i still love this series, fite me), rolling with my posse and having them swoop in on dudes was awesome
Hotline Miami - awesome quick game with an amazing aesthetic and i just instantly want to jump back in and have the perfect run

Super Mario Galaxy 2 -tbqh i simply played this a lot more than the original. Incredible. Top 5 all time.
Demon's Souls - Only played this and DaS1. Both great ofc, but this had the most impact and having to order in the Chinese copy and slowly navigate through this scary inhospitable game before the plethora of guides felt cool, like i was involved with some clandestine group.. then it blew up and souls fans become nearly as bad as nintendorks

It's kinda overwhelming just to think how many games have come out in the last 10 years. And also how much the budgets have changed in that decade.

10 years ago it felt like the industry was struggling. we were worried about b-tier titles dying off as publishers kept pushing bigger and bigger budget games. nowadays it feels like every corner of the market is throwing more games at us than we could ever hope to play. the big publishers are still being stupid and risking suicide with gigantic projects, but there's tons of other devs making smaller-scale titles on everything, especially phones and pc.

i've been thinking it over in my head that this year could be considered the best the industry's ever had, in terms of great releases. i can't even keep track of all the amazing stuff that's been coming out.

I mean honestly the real answer is Witcher 3 and everything else is a distant second at best.

The industry is in a really (surprisingly?) healthy place as far as volume of shit coming out and variety. I don't really give much of a shit about anything except what I enjoy playing at this point (arpgs) and the occasional "big" release in a genre I like (Zelda, jrpgs, etc). The industry is also in a weird place trying to hump as much money out of people with microtransactions and multiplayer shit that I just don't care for, so it feels that it has passed me by a bit, which I'm honestly fine with. I feel like if you have no filter you're demi, and ugh. Who wants that. Sorry demi.
