• People will switch en masse to self-drive electric vehicles (EVs) that are ten times cheaper to run than fossil-based cars
• Only nostalgics will cling to the old habit of car ownership. The rest will adapt to vehicles on demand

I saw some studies by McKinsey and another consulting firm (maybe Navigant) that projected EVs to skyrocket in market share over the next decade, but they weren't this optimistic.

If there's ever a landmark case where "rollin' coal" drivers are convicted of assault, it'd be interesting to see if anyone produces a glorious self-defense plea after getting choked by their smoke.

We already are capable of shifting to renewable sources, we just have too many vested interests in fossil fuel continuance, the disruption to the world economy would be staggering, and we haven't got decent infrastructure. Right now, California is producing so much solar power that we have to pay our neighbors to take it from us; there's a storage and distribution problem, internally.

I know it's mean-hearted thinking, but I'd love to have Russia and the Middle East have to figure out something new to do for their money.

I don't buy it. You replace all fossil fuel cars with Electric. Congrats, you move from one pollutant to another. Sure, you may reduce the footprint a little, but it's still going to be there due to Electric having to be generated. I don't buy Dealerships closing so suddenly unless EV's are way cheaper than gas variants.

Well, you need to keep in mind that assuming you switch all vehicles to electric, you're also phasing out a ton of oil refineries, which are another major source of pollution.

Obviously, bumping up production from renewable sources is a necessary parallel step, but that's also been increasing significantly. And that can always be complemented with a couple nuclear reactors.

Most futurists are too optimistic. They want to see dramatic change in their lifetime and also believe that by promising that a thing is right around the corner, it will open people up to the idea faster (thereby facilitating it). Kurzweil is good example of this.

I don't like it, because it makes me cast doubt on everything else you are trying to say, even if it is so.

I've always kinda wondered why one was embraced so hard by the internet intelligentsia and they probably never have heard of the other. Let alone its book.
