Final Fantasy IX is the best JRPG ever made

I never appreciated it until now.

I played it on easy mode in iOS and I can't fathom why anyone would want anymore than this.

I'm never entirely sure how games that involve shit like half naked body builders owning gaudy casinos, crossdressing and seducing a land lord, worldwide card games that everyone seems to know how to play,  ridiculous subweapons like megaphones, dogs and swords that also shoot bullets, and characters like a black military man with a gun for an arm, a remote controlled cat riding a giant stuffed moogle, a ninja played entirely for laughs, a martial artist that stuffs his face with hot dogs, a ditz that loves trains and a sniper that can't shoot for shit get tagged as "grim dark srs bsns".

Yet earlier games that involve war, mass murder, death of people 5 minutes after you meet them, a literal brooding dark knight redemption story, continents getting erased off the map, a demon emperor who dies, is sent to hell then comes back to life because he took over hell, the literal embodiment of DARKNESS being summoned to destroy everything, etc somehow don't get the same treatment. 

FF has always been stupid. If anything the games have gotten more and more lighthearted with totally out there plots, characters and settings until Matsuno penned FF12 to be the most dour entry possible.

I think I need to try the PC version with the speedup features, since the original game was a bit too slow. Still a great game, with the charm and whimsy that modern day FF is sorely lacking in.

FF9 is darker than some remember it being. It has a really colorful and whimsical setting, art style in general. But theres a fmv on disc 2 of an entire mountain village thats beautiful, getting wrecked by suicidal magic dolls, manufactured beings.

Forgot lil black mage dudes' name, but its always especially sad and terrifying that he's seeing similar peeps used like that.

FFVII and VIII being billed as srs business has always been butt fucking stupid. The darkest element of VIII for instance is that they're child soldiers. FF has always had a mix light harder and seriousness. VII and VIII are no different.

Squall is a socially akward dork that doesn't know how to interact with people despite actually being well intentioned. His biggest fear is ending up alone despite his best efforts to be friendly, so he chooses to push people away in the first place. He falls in love, resolves to try to change himself and does what he can to protect the people important to him.

Like, I know spin off media likes to flanderize protagonists and zero in on just specific parts of their personality, but it's not like its hard to play their games and see that there's more to them than that.

Zidane has a dark broody moment where he's confronted with the truth that he's just one of a series of clones created to become literal ANGELS OF DEATH. Somehow people forget that part of the story tho.

The entire point is that a game with Laguna is hardly dark and brooding. Or the shit with Seifer at the beginning on the way to Dollet. FFVIII has a clear sense of humor and is light hearted at many times. The same is true for VII. Cloud dressing up as a girl, the wonky translation, a walking stuffed animal lead by a cat with a megaphone, anything regarding Yuffie, Barret and Red XIII in SAILOR UNIFORMS and Red has to walk on two feet to pretend to be human, that fucking crazy ass play at the Gold Saucer. There is nothing to indicate FFVII or VIII as dark, brooding games.

Yet somehow FFVI gets a pass with its killing half the world population thing, poisoning entire towns, suicide, and "what is love?"

It's just kinda absurd.

This is the main point. Pretty much most rpgs tend to have "saving the world from destruction" plots, in which lots of people die or are threatened with death to drive home the stakes of the plot. That kinda comes with the territory.

The difference is- are the main characters likable or emo douches? I'd say that as far as the PS1 era FFs go, VII is a mixed bag, VIII is waaaaaaay into emo douche territory, and IX is a likable bunch. YMMV, obvs. But if it does you're wrong.

It's pretty good and I'd argue has the best soundtrack from VII->IX and maybe best art. The characters are a bit uninteresting, but the story has some neat twists. The Alexander CG movie is dope. I think the biggest thing against it back during PS1 days was the battle system was SLOW for an FF game. With the newer versions that speed that up I'm sure it's great. I should replay it one day.
