Wouldn't know Anime Kawaii from Anime Moonrune if they spitroasted me in the shower as part of a sex cult.

I'm not a weeaboo, but most of that Wiki How fails to work for me just from my context. For just one example, I'm largely forced to prioritize Japanese goods. And I find myself using Japanese jargon out of necessity to communicate with my family.  :'( :japancry

How not to become a weeaboo? Visit somewhere in Japan other than Denden Town or Akihabara and try to act like a weeaboo. Problem solved.

I still want to punch the guy I overheard on the ferry from Miyajima talking about how he needed at least five days in Akihabara. You can do it in like two fucking hours. Get out and go wander cool neighborhoods and eat some goddamn ramen.

Maybe he was over there to buy stuff to resell for his business?  My boss did that once or twice way back in my game shop days.

Yeah but that's Kyoto castle, not Nintendo Hq. If I were to visit Japan I'd visit Buddhist temples for their historicity, visit museums on warring states period, visit castles, go to different arcades to fight Japanese competition, and eat food. Go to Akiba and buying manga or games I'd only find in Japan would certainly be on the menu but number one?

Akiba-weebs are terrifying.

The crazy otaku-types in general are terrifying.  I saw a Japanese guy casually walking behind a maid cafe worker, trying to take upskirt photos, one of the the last times I was there.

I’ve been to Kyoto castle AND Nintendo HQ. Funny story, my ex, who was Japanese, and I were at Nintendo HQ, some lady came out and started asking her questions. Apparently they were ready to let me in because they thought I was some important visitor they were expecting and assumed my ex was just my translator. I was kinda mad at her for not running with it and see how long we could’ve kept the con going.

Instead they just threw us out of the premises.

Honestly, the nerd shit in Japan got old real quick though. It’s like once you’ve seen one store, you’ve pretty much seen all of them. I was able to get my hand on the Japanese version of God Hand, which included the soundtrack. That was pretty neat. Clerk gave me a thumbs up when I bought it too. That motherfucker knew what was up, lemme tell you guys.

I also got called a chicken loving gaijin by some guy on a train apparently. Don’t know what prompted him to say that.

Anyway, I have nothing relevant to add to this topic. Japan is beautiful. After going there just once, if you come back still with the impression that it’s all anime shit, you’d have to be a complete dummy to have missed everything else around you.

Maybe it's because I was a dumb tourist, but when I was there we stayed in Yotsuya in Shinjuku, and it was great. Spent a lot of time in shimo-kitazawa and I think my fav plc in shinjuku was nonbei yakocho... Tl:dr spent a lot of time in neighbourhoods around Tokyo, but when we were bored we'd often go to this arcade we found in akihabara which, to me being fairly uninitiated had an anazing range of old arcade machines and you could smoke inside. Didn't find anything like that elsewhere.

It's totally fine to be a tourist, have fun, stumble around in wonder, and rejoice in it all. Everyone loves seeing someone appreciating what they've got right in front of them, drinking it in. There's so much great about Japan, it'd be a crime to be blasé about it.

The weeb factor comes in when foreigners seem to think they're Paul Atreides meeting the Fremen for the first time: "He will know their ways as if born to them!" when in actuality they're just being annoying, a kind of queef-shit shat-a-rock. I want everyone to come and enjoy their ride, but don't want them fooling themselves that they're like Admiral Perry and his black fleet.

A lot of people show up fed fully on a junk diet of manga and anime, and then overlay that knowledge over what they experience in Japan. Rather than being open to what’s actually happening around them, they’re accepting of only the most narrow overlap of what the culture is and what they expected.

Shimokitazawa is my favorite neighborhood in Tokyo. Yanaka is a close second. Just cool areas to wander around and pop into little shops.
