Hellboy II is totes legit
« on: November 19, 2017, 08:54:54 AM »
I watched Pan's Labyrinth for the first time a few days ago. And Absolutely loved it. So I was craving some more del Toro weirdness, and the "recommended movies" section would not stop recommending Devil's Backbonr, Crimson Peak, and Hellboy II.

Since I watched Hellboy a long time ago and enjoyed it, I thought Hellboy II was going to be the easiest watch. It was and it was the tits. Way more enjoyable than the first.

I don't know much about the comics, but I saw some Pan's Labyrinth influence in some of the creature designs. Those scenes covering the paranormal felt like a cool mix of Pan's (aesthetics), Star Wars (aesthetic), and Ghost Busters (aesthetic and behaviors). The entire movie gave me a Ghostbuster's vibe in a good way. Maybe even a little Fifth Element too? I don't know. It was funny, energetic, well paced, and absolutely gorgeous. It satiated the craving I had.

Did y'all watch and like it? If not, you're a racist cishet scum. Kill yourself digitally.

yeah dog, Hellboy 2 is probably one of my favorite movies. It has such a good tone and the report between all the characters is fantastic.

its a shame we'll never get a follow up to the ending and the next one will probably be a grimdark R rated reboot.

Oh god. I read a bit about the proposed follow-up. And now I'm even more sicker thinking about it's cast and prospects. We're definitely living in the darker timeline.

Yeah, the aesthetics were great and, compared to the first movie, the writing got a lot better .

It has great production design. The faerie market is one of my favorite pretend places ever. The character design is also really tight. But it's not a great movie. I think. Maybe I need a re-watch.

I liked Kroenen in the first movie better than the comic version. And as one of the better "film" villains by name in comic book adaptions. The wind-up key and having to crank himself up. It made him a creepier character than, you know, the whole undead Nazi assassin part alone.

It's kinda weird how there wasn't a third movie, when the second did better both commercially and critically, the Marvel and Nolan craze was starting. del Toro won nearly half the critical acclaim possible sans Oscars for Pan's Labyrinth. Especially when he bailed out of The Hobbit.

Though I guess at the point he did that he was already onto Pacific Rim.

Plus there was all that time he was spending working with Volition on the inSANE trilogy, he was probably worked to the bone. Especially after he started on Silent Hills and Justice League Dark too.

Looking at the wikipage for the "2019ish" Hellboy film, Mignola wrote the original screenplay but intended it as a soft reboot building off the del Toro films he loved, and wasn't concerned about an R rating. Then they told him it'd be a full reboot and how they were going about it and he's since moved into an unofficial "Hellboy adviser" position but otherwise is uninvolved. But still has screenplay credit, along with his partner Christopher Golden, currently though there is still plenty of time for that to change.

I am drawn to the idea David Potter is playing Hellboy, also that I'm making reference to his role in the American version of Rake rather than anything else he's done that people would be more familiar with like Stranger Things.

Also there's this:
Quote
Milla Jovovich as Nimue, The Blood Queen, a medieval British sorceress who seeks to destroy humankind.

As for Hellboy 2, it’s been a while, but I recall liking the original more. The second one kind of felt long to me, like it was a couple episodes of a TV show slapped together. It wasn’t bad, it just didn’t really bang.

sorry to bump this, I but I just remembered this thing from a few days back and had to weigh in.

I effing love Del Toro. Love the guy, love his taste, his enthusiasm, and he's high in the running for best fantasy filmmaker of all time (either him, Tsui Hark, or Peter Jackson). But I don't love Hellboy, which is so disappointing to me because I really want to, it does so many things so well but for some ineffable reason it doesn't strike a chord with me. But Hellboy II, oh yeah, that's a movie. Hellboy 1 keeps getting pulled unhappily towards convention, Hellboy II gets to proudly wave its freak flag high. Not for nothing too, but I'll make the bold claim that Hellboy II has the best and perhaps most practical effects of the last decade. The first film is never actually bad, but weirdly underwhelming for me, the sequel is so far ahead of its predecessor, at everything (its even got much improved fight scenes) that it makes its previous movie better, or at least something I can better appreciate as it contains all (actually too much really) table setting for the second film.

I still prefer small-production Del Toro to blockbuster-Del Toro (with the deliriously staid/berserk Crimson Peak squaring the equation nicely), but if I've gotta choose one of his big-budget films above all others its Hellboy II, easily, and I love Pacific Rim.

The second film really felt formulaic and much more conventional, not unlike your average Marvel film now really. It didn't really pack a punch and as a result came across as wooden (the obligatory sequence where monsters are treated as freaks by normies :noooo  :'( :yeshrug). The villain was a bad fantasy repeat of Blade 2.
The first one has many flaws but it has an horror vibe to it and therefore I think it's slighty closer to the spirit of the source material though it's wildly off the mark in terms of illustration. Del Toro can do terror OK but it never worked when he's also "indulging" in binging the visuals. Brilliant as the designs may be, it's always too baroque and busy in my opinion. I always was lukewarm to him helming a rumored 150m version of the Moutains of Madness for that reason, contrary to many in geek circles.

Also, Perlman make up doesn't do it for me and that is a big issue. Hellboy looks like he has premature aging or some shit.

I re-watched it.
I liked the first 90% of it much more than the previous times. However, the last fight sequence is just kind of soulless. But I'm more on-board than I used to be.
