sorry to bump this, I but I just remembered this thing from a few days back and had to weigh in.
I effing love Del Toro. Love the guy, love his taste, his enthusiasm, and he's high in the running for best fantasy filmmaker of all time (either him, Tsui Hark, or Peter Jackson). But I don't love Hellboy, which is so disappointing to me because I really want to, it does so many things so well but for some ineffable reason it doesn't strike a chord with me. But Hellboy II, oh yeah, that's a movie. Hellboy 1 keeps getting pulled unhappily towards convention, Hellboy II gets to proudly wave its freak flag high. Not for nothing too, but I'll make the bold claim that Hellboy II has the best and perhaps most practical effects of the last decade. The first film is never actually bad, but weirdly underwhelming for me, the sequel is so far ahead of its predecessor, at everything (its even got much improved fight scenes) that it makes its previous movie better, or at least something I can better appreciate as it contains all (actually too much really) table setting for the second film.
I still prefer small-production Del Toro to blockbuster-Del Toro (with the deliriously staid/berserk Crimson Peak squaring the equation nicely), but if I've gotta choose one of his big-budget films above all others its Hellboy II, easily, and I love Pacific Rim.
