Actors whose popularity you find mystifying
« on: December 04, 2017, 10:58:39 PM »
Seth Rogen and Mark Wahlberg.

Seth Rogen is in, like, pretty much every Judd Apatow extended family of comedy movies in some role or another, so you'd expect him to be a pretty funny guy, but he's not. Every time he showed up in the trailer for The Disaster Artists I found myself annoyed because literally anyone else would be funnier. And his laugh is basically Hitler. He's sub-Jonah Hill at this point, who I will give props to for dropping a few pounds and upping his acting game.

Mark Wahlberg is basically a mid-range actor with a couple of above-average roles in his career, at best, which is actually really super bad because he's basically in every movie made in the past 10 years. Or at least that's what it seems like. He's overexposed and not a good or interesting actor. Do people like his blandness? Is he really easy to work with or something? I dunno.

I had a dream where I was filming a buddy movie with Seth Rogan.  At some point I mentioned that he didn't have much range and that he should just play himself.  It really hurt his feelings and he stormed off.  He is likeable and I liked him in that Steve Jobs movie though.

Seth Rogen and Mark Wahlberg.

Ditto on both. Rogen has been in funny stuff before but he's never the main reason that the thing is funny. Often he just seems to be there.

Wahlberg is weird because he seems to be often cast as this vaguely tough guy when he doesn't seem very tough or intimidating or menacing in a good way.

Haven't seen disaster artist so maybe that will change my mind, but generally James Franco is also a turn off for me. He's either bland or boring in most roles to me.

Ryan Gosling is pretty good in Blade Runner, but it's at least partially because the role is a good fit for him.

Seth Rogen is pretty funny. He can only play one character, but he does it pretty well. I chock up any criticism of him as schlubby nerds being jealous of a successful schlubby nerd. You missed your chance, Rumbler, when you didn’t let Judd Apatow rape you, and now you’re bitter.

But at this point I guess I can't really talk about their "popularity."

Ryan Gosling is hot & cute at the same time, and in good movies, Seth Rogan was funny in Knocked Up and surprisingly dramatically decent in Steve Jobs.

Yeah, Mark Wahlberg is bland as fuck. The only movie I liked in which he had a role was The Departed, but that one had an ensemble cast and I don't think I cared much about him there either.

But does Wahlberg even do a lot of acting these days? Isn't he more of a producer now, or am I mistaking him with somebody else?

A few years ago I'd have also mentioned Ashton Kutcher. Don't know how the myth that he's a quality actor came to be. But you don't hear much about him anymore.

Ah yes, Jared Leto is another good one. Fuck most of these method actor fools in general. Or at least the young ones who make a big thing of it.

I don't think he's been mentioned : Di Caprio. I mean he's OK but I never found him to be so magnetic, fascinating or in awe of his acting range (Though he was tremendous fun in Django) to justify his predestined legendary status and it's all the more jarring I sometimes feels casting agents and directors are trying too hard to prove us he can play anything, look he can be J.E.Hoover with shitty makeup !

Sam Worthington too, but really he wasn't really popular. I's not exactly uncommon for some guys to get a big blitz / push because their stars aligned but the guy was bland as a vegetable.

Wahlberg is weird because he seems to be often cast as this vaguely tough guy when he doesn't seem very tough or intimidating or menacing in a good way.

By age 13, Wahlberg had developed an addiction to cocaine and other substances.

At 15, civil action was filed against Wahlberg for his involvement in two separate incidents of throwing rocks and shouting racial epithets at African-American children; the first incident was against two brothers and their sister; the second incident was against a group of school children on a field trip.

At 16, Wahlberg approached a middle-aged Vietnamese man named Thanh Lam on the street, and using a large wooden stick, bashed him over the head until he was knocked unconscious while calling him a "Vietnam fucking shit". That same day, Wahlberg also attacked a second Vietnamese man named Hoa "Johnny" Trinh, sucker punching him in the eye. According to court documents regarding these crimes, when Wahlberg was arrested later that night and returned to the scene of the first assault, he stated to police officers: "You don't have to let him identify me, I'll tell you now that's the mother-fucker whose head I split open."[16] Investigators also noted that Wahlberg "made numerous unsolicited racial statements about 'gooks' and 'slant-eyed gooks'.

For these crimes, Wahlberg was charged with attempted murder, pleaded guilty to assault, and was sentenced to two years in Suffolk County Deer Island House of Correction. He ultimately served only 45 days of his sentence,[17][19] but carries a permanent felony record. Wahlberg believed he had left Trinh permanently blind in one eye.[15][17][18] Trinh was interviewed in December 2014 by the Daily Mail; he revealed that he had already lost that eye during the Vietnam War, and did not know the identity of his assailant prior to being contacted by the media.[20]

In another incident, then 21-year-old Wahlberg fractured the jaw of a neighbor in an unprovoked attack.[21] Court documents state that in 1992, Wahlberg "without provocation or cause, viciously and repeatedly kicked" a man named Robert D. Crehan in the face and jaw while another man named Derek McCall held Crehan down on the ground

 :doge

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_Wahlberg#Arrests_and_conviction

On the bright-side™:

Commenting in 2006 on his past crimes, Wahlberg stated: "I did a lot of things that I regret, and I have certainly paid for my mistakes." He said the right thing to do would be to try to find the blinded man and make amends, and admitted he has not done so, but added that he was no longer burdened by guilt: "You have to go and ask for forgiveness and it wasn't until I really started doing good and doing right by other people, as well as myself, that I really started to feel that guilt go away. So I don't have a problem going to sleep at night. I feel good when I wake up in the morning."[19] In 2016, Wahlberg said he'd met Trinh and apologized for his "horrific acts".[23]

After prison, Wahlberg decided to improve his behavior. Of this he has said,[24]

As soon as I began that life of crime, there was always a voice in my head telling me I was going to end up in jail. Three of my brothers had done time. My sister went to prison so many times I lost count. Finally I was there, locked up with the kind of guys I'd always wanted to be like. Now I'd earned my stripes and I was just like them, and I realized it wasn't what I wanted at all. I'd ended up in the worst place I could possibly imagine and I never wanted to go back. First of all, I had to learn to stay on the straight and narrow.

Wahlberg first relied on the guidance of his parish priest to turn his back on crime. He told his street gang that he was leaving them and had "some serious fights" with them over it.[25]

On November 26, 2014, Wahlberg filed an application in Massachusetts requesting a full and unconditional pardon[26] of his prior convictions.[27] His pardon application engendered some controversy.[17] According to the BBC, the debate about his suitability for a pardon raised "difficult issues, with the arguments on both sides being far-reaching and complex".[28] One of Wahlberg's victims, Trinh, pledged in December 2014 to make a written statement supporting a pardon.[20] Kristyn Atwood, one of the African-American children attacked by Wahlberg, spoke out against the pardon in 2015, saying "a racist will always be a racist".[29] In September 2016, Wahlberg's pardon petition was closed after he failed to answer a request from the pardon board as to whether he wanted it to remain open.

Wait, that's not really a bright side. :doge :doge :doge :doge :doge :doge :doge

yeah early career Ryan Gosling was terrible, but I've come around on him. But a big part of that is because he won the 'Most Improved Since Keanu' award, and pursued roles that fought against the image that he initially fell into (the guy from The Notebook plays a dead-eyed psycho in Drive, for example).

Also, I feel like a heel for mentioning this one, as its clearly way outside of my wheelhouse as a non-Tamil speaking white guy, but the generationally popularity of Rajinikanth is baffling to me. He's now an old man (66), was never that handsome, a mediocre singer/dancer (both liabilities for Indian cinema stardom), and yet he continues to have what appears to be a healthy career making films that are pretty damn weird, even by the standards of the Indian film industry. I can understand an older actor coasting off of past success to sustain their present career, but apparently there's certain audiences that can't get enough of this guy.

there's a documentary about his hardest-core fans, For The Love of a Man, which also makes for a half-decent horror movie incidentally.

I mean, imagine spending your life just about worshipping a guy who made this movie...

which is from 2014, not 2004.

I really enjoyed the first two-ish Hunger Games movies, but the rest + anything else is just.. no thanks. It's not like she's bad, or doesn't deserve fame, but I don't understand how she's one of the top paid actors alive. And on talk shows she seems very try-hard. "Look at me I'm so goofy"

JLaw is a good actress. While I didn't care for the Hunger Games movies, I was really impressed with her in Silver Linings. And she was also good in American Hustle.

But the hype surrounding that woman became really obnoxious (though it decreased somewhat in the last few years), and like Valkyrie said, she's really pushing that ditzy public persona too hard, to a point that suggests to me that she's actually a stuck-up bitch in private. Though given her Fappening pics she ain't a prude, that's for sure :P

Don't get the Jlaw hate, feels like she gets a ton of internet hate every since she became successful. Felt like backlash jealously/misogyny thing. And because hunger games was big dumb and successful.

She's great in Silver Linings, she was pretty good in Mother, I actually think she is great in X-men. She seems like she's trying to not just get stereotyped as the hunger games gal.

I mean she's no Jessica Chastain in acting ability (can't wait for that Sorkin movie), but Jlaw is a perfectly fine actress.

Leto is actually pretty good, but he overvalues himself way too much.

This exactly. I think Leto is a good actor and pretty sexy Jesus look, but everything I've seen about him makes him seem extremely pretentious and full of himself like he thinks he's Daniel Day-Lewis already.

I watched it this year after learning how much he hated it and regretted doing it because he played a villain and he's actually pretty good in The Killers considering how he otherwise plays the same character in everything else I've ever seen of his.

Though that decades later comeback eight year series they did where he played the President was totally unbelievable nonsense that jumped the shark almost from the first season. Ratings were huge though. And viewers really came out in support of him when they considered replacing him half way through. Though the guy playing the Vice President and later the Soviet President were even harder to take seriously.

Never followed up to see how that series turned out.

Speaking of Leto, my sister very strongly hinted that she wants me to go see his crappy band live with her :yuck She's had the hots for him since My So-Called Life :-\

Also on topic, I've never understood how Scarlett Johansson is regarded by many as such a good actress, I mean I can think of two things that made her very popular but skills wise I don't get it. Every movie I've seen her in she always has her mouth open in every scene like she can't breathe through her nose at all. Makes every character she portrays seem really slow. But I haven't seen her in anything in years so maybe she's improved.
